Last Week on All Things Fangirl

We kept busy on the blog last week after stealing Tumblr's format for many a post.

Features

Eruditechick interviews the cast of Pandorum - they're awesome. Movie looks cool. Neato!

Opinion

EruditeChick sees The Descent for the first time and flips out. And rightly so.

I react to the Tony noms. I've only seen...oh...two shows this year, so the reaction is minimal

Danny Gokey sucked on Idol this week! I rejoice! What you don't see is how sad I got afterwards when Allison got sent home instead of Gokey Gokes. Gross.

Poor Chris Pine Thinks Fans Hate Him [Clip]

Remember how yesterday, this site developed a comedy theme? Looks like today a Star Trek theme is forming! I don't know why. Just the way it is.

So. On to actual post. A friend of mine (and very cool lady) who is also friends with Chris Pine mentioned to me after Wondercon that Pine thought the fans hated him. Since finding out this information I've wondered and wondered what could have possibly made him think that. From my perspective, the crowd loved him and he, Quinto & Saldana were all hits.

On Jimmy Kimmel last night, Pine actually talked about Wondercon and went into why (he thought) the fans hated him. I stand by the fact that the Wondercon crowd absolutely loved him, but can see why he thought otherwise.

For his thoughts on Wondercon and also a look at his first acting role, watch below

Attack of the Awkward Interviewer [Clip]

Eruditechick found this, I believe via @ProgGrrl and it's just too genius not to post. It's an interview from the Trek junket that you'd think HAS to be fake. The actors are certainly acting like a joke is being played on them but...I don't know man, I think this guy is just that awkward. Watch the brilliance below.

REVANCHE is a dish best served with bullets. bullets and sex.

Revanche (or “Revenge,” in some other, silly language that i don’t understand) is a fiercely existential thriller by Gotz Spielmann that has been on my radar for some time because it’s one of the rare first-run films that my beloved Criterion Collection is issuing directly into their DVD (and blu-ray?) line. this languid yet astonishingly confident thriller about an ex-con (a forceful Johannes Krisch) and the prostitute he loves is hardly the meditation on fate and randomness that many critics have been quick to dismiss (or praise in spite of the over-simplification) it as. rather, it’s a tight, salacious little chronicle of the hierarchy of human needs wrapped in unusually pretty b-movie trappings. spielmann engenders an unsettling unpredictability by having a plot-driven first half dovetail into a jarringly contemplative conclusion thatnever loses the edge of the action by which it was preceded.

that fluid tonal dynamic - when coupled with spielmann’s staunch, static camera - turns every spare inch of frame into a potential portal for disaster, every window a chance for Krisch to make another bull-headed mistake… also, Revanche was kinda hot, no? an arbitrary, pitchforkian 8.7.

I Am Woman, Hear Me OH GOD THEY SEE WITH THEIR EARS RUN! RUUUUUN!!!!

So, I just watched- and pretty much tweeted- The Descent, a horror film released in 2005 that I didn't see because I didn't think it looked interesting. Well, BOY-HOWDY, was I WRONG.

I have a crush on Natalie Jackson Mendoza.

A zillion reviews exist, and apparently, after reading the wiki, the version I just saw (on SciFi) was so badly cut up that I missed a few very important thematic character moments, and that pisses me the eff off, but whatever- so I'll keep this brief. The basic gist is PURE SHEER AWESOME and I will tell you why.

All female cast. It's just as gory as any other recent horror release. It's as plausible. It's intelligently written, the characters are as varied, there are no token characters. It's scary as hell.

But you're not bogged down by the ridiculous, oppressive, nauseating sexual aspect that pretty much every gore flick feels the need to perpetuate. Take a look at the single most successful horror films of recent years: The Saw movies. Almost wholly devoid of sex. I have never been a fan of slasher movies, but I can, do, and always have appreciated good horror. Good horror is extremely rare, these days. The only thing that tends to be horrifying about them is the way they use women, not as characters, but as fetishized objects not just for male characters (who tend to be equally as disposable) but also for whatever mutant creature or murderous fiend is the antagonist of the picture. And to be honest, I'm fucking sick of it.

I will not watch your crappy, hack, uninspired and unoriginal (probably remade) horror-porn. It's bad enough being subjected to your terrible cellophane plot and tired devices. I absolutely will not subject myself to watching your use of rape as a gross-out factor without addressing what it is and what its repercussions are.

I'm looking at you, Hills Have Eyes.

With The Descent, we have a psychological profile of a trauma victim that is explored against a backdrop of sheer, crushing terror and real danger, both from the Creakers and the dark of the Earth. The relationships between women can frequently be complicated- guys that I know don't really understand terms like 'best enemies', or understand how people who are ostensibly friends are actually traversing a continual minefield of mutual resentments and possible outright dislikes, and yet persist in being friends.

It's complicated.

The Descent explores the complexity of female relationships (with the added fun of life or death situations and guilt, gobs of it), the fractured nature of a grief-ravaged mind, and oogie creatures that live in the dark, all compressed together in a riveting, stifling, freaking scary 99 minutes.

That movie was awesome.

Sad Out of Shape Wolverine [Clips]

Continuing with the comedy theme I seem to be developing today...

A couple weeks ago, someone threw this link my way and I'm just getting around to watching. Don't be fooled by the low res video and echoey sound - Sad (Out of Shape) Wolverine, a new webseries by comedy group Your Girlfriend, is of a higher quality than its budget would lead you to believe. Featuring not only Wolvie, but his roommates Insult Comic Spiderman & Drunk Cylops (still lamenting the death of Jean Grey), this short sketches are actually pretty hilarious and clearly written by people who know their Marvel universe. I especially like the nod to Wolverine's actual height and use of the word "snikt" in episode 2.

I've posted the first four episodes below. Hope you enjoy!

Episode 1 - Sad Wolverine tries to make lunch

Episode 2 - Wolvie vidchats with old friend Kitty Pryde

Episode 3 - Wolverine runs into the Blob

Episode 4 - Wolverine watches Wolverine: Origins See full post

Kings of Dot Comedy [Clips]

I recently discovered that A. Attack of the Show has been doing a Kings of Dot Comedy segment and B. Three sketch groups featuring people I went to NYU with have already been profiled on the show. I recommend Joey & David, BriTaNick & Harvard Sailing Team highly. All around, the guys involved are awesome, hilarious people and you should definitely check them out if you haven't already.

Junior League of Superheroes Party Tonight in LA [Event]

There is a party tonight in Los Angeles to raise money for a new webseries called The Junior League Of Superheroes.
Imagine we live in a world where good battles evil...where ordinary people strive to leave their mundane lives and accomplish extraordinary things. And within that world are six bumbling wannabe superheros who have no idea what they're getting themselves into. This is our story. This is The Junior League of Superheroes.

I have high hopes for this show cause I was a huge fan of Malcolm McChesney, a serialized mockumentary that was first posted a couple years ago, and the two shows have a bunch of actors/creative team in common.

If I were in LA, I'd be going to this party. But I'm in NY. So I won't be. But if you're in LA and randomly check this blog on Saturdays and even more randomly are looking for a superhero themed party to attend tonight, well then, good thing I posted this, huh?

The first episode of JLoSH will be posted tomorrow. I shall watch it. See full post

Reason #87 BKV Is Awesome [Panel]

Not a photo per se...Could I call it art? Well I think I'm gonna. Comic Art. Oh...well...actually...I could say Comic Panel. Or just panel. Okay, Panel it is.

This is from Ex Machina Vol 2: Tag, by Brian K. Vaughan or as I call him, BKV. Cause I often forget how to spell Vaughan and it upsets me. This panel takes place in 2002 & was written in 2005, three years before any real, consistent movement on this political issue, and is reason #87 BKW is awesome. Click to enlarge.

Zombies Were People Too [Shirt of the Day]

So when I was at the Fango convention in LA a couple weeks ago, I came upon a couple booths with shirts I quite enjoyed. One, I had previously seen at another convention, so didn't take a card, cause I figured I'd for sure see them at Comic Con. The other, Tattered Star, I'd never encountered before, so I grabbed a business card. This is the shirt of theirs that nabbed my attention,

I enjoy Zombies and shirts about Zombies, so this made me chuckle. Then I saw this one, which also made me lols a bit,

Yes! Danny Gokey Sucks!

Last night's theme for the Top 4 was the very broad & very awesome Rock Week. I didn't make a "Here's what they should sing!" post because I wasn't even sure where to begin. Though I'd like to think I would have requested that Adam sing Bowie, Queen, Zepplin, Radiohead, etc and that Allison sing Heart or Joplin and that Kris sing something folk rocky or The Beatles...though for SURE not the song he chose and that Danny Gokey shut the hell up and go home. Which hopefully he will do tonight!

Every week I look forward not only to Idol, but to EW's Idol recap. Michael Slezak always seems to be on the same page as me, and this is why I love him. Here's a bit that pretty much explains how I felt last night,

Shall we tally [the "heinous crimes" committed last night] Danny Gokey garroted a defenseless Aerosmith tune till its tongue lolled purple and bloated from its mouth. Kris Allen was casually hurled under the bus by a band of vicious imbeciles. Simon Cowell repeatedly vandalized his own reputation and hacked away at the last remaining threads of credibility that Idol possesses. Kara DioGuardi committed a lewd act, not to mention multiple counts of first-degree stupidity. And with their flawless, episode-ending duet, Allison Iraheta and Adam Lambert stole the show.

Because SERIOUSLY??!!?! The judges REALLY disappointed me last night. I didn't understand WHAT was going on. Kris was better than Danny. Like, way better. Should he have chosen a different song? Probably. But he still SOUNDED GOOD. WHICH DANNY DID NOT. HELLO!?! I can't even imagine how Danny's craptastic cover of Dream On would sound good in the studio recording and EVERYTHING sounds better in the studio recording. Ugh, it was just awful. Yet Simon says "You're safe" and Paula says "A+ for effort." WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE?! Danny gets points for picking a song he has no business singing and trying to be like Adam and Kris gets thrown under the bus for trying to pick a song that suited him the most, doing everything he could to make it his own even though they weren't allowed to rearrange this week!? WHAT IS HAPPENING. So help me, if Kris goes home this week. To experience the absurdity first hand (or semi-first hand) check out this transcript of the judges critiquing Danny.

For that matter, Allison doesn't deserve to go home either. I thought she sounded amazing, as always, and that duet with Adam was AWESOME. Wouldn't have picked that song for them, but it was still really fun and nice to see after the awkwardness that was Kris & Danny's duet. P.S. didn't Kris seem really upset throughout the whole show last night? Why was that? Lack of confidence? Thought he was going home? Or did something happen right beforehand that jolted him? Was he sad he didn't get a dress rehearsal? Made me sad. I love Kris. Swoonz.

Woohoo! Just read this on Slezak's post. Slezak, let's be friends,

(What a contrast to the utterly chemistry-free and time-wasting pairing of Danny and Kris on the thematically dubious ''Renegade.'' The whole affair was such a non-starter, the only significant note I took on it was to note the fury in Kris' eyes when Simon blithely (and incorrectly) decided he'd been outsung by a showboating Danny.)

Thank you.

So close the top three we've all wanted for 8 weeks we can taste it! Allison, Kris, Adam. Allison, Kris, Adam. Just repeat it enough and it will happen. Go home, Gokey! GO GO GO HOME, GOKEY.

I'm really into American Idol this season...

Now, for the round-up!

My pick for worst: Danny

Slezak's pick for worst/going homet: Danny

EW reader's pick for worst/going home: Danny

Dial Idol's guess for going home: Allison

MTV's guess for going home: Kris

My pick for going home: Terrible fear it'll be Kris or Allison, pulling for Danny. GO HOME GOKEY.

Watch for yourself!

In Celebration of a New Pandorum Poster...[Interviewzes!]

In celebration of this creepy new Pandorum poster (above), we're finally posting our interviews with three of the Pandorum cast members from Wondercon. They were all a delight, especially Mr. Foster, cause he is so squee-worthy. Nommm, Ben Foster. You know, the more I learn about this movie, the more excited I get. Before we get into the interviews, here's the trailer,

And now, the interviews,

Cung Lee is soft-spoken, smiling, and extremely compact. He comes across as a very mellow, laid back, and not necessarily capable of killing you with his bare hands. But he can. Cung Lee is not just a martial artist, but is in fact a martial arts champion, with three US Open Int’l Championships, 4 US National Championships and is the current Strikeforce Middleweight Champion. Legitimately. Can kill you with his bare hands. He plays Agricultural Specialist Manh in the upcoming space thriller Pandorum.

EC: So, your character is an agricultural scientist who is also a martial arts master. Is there something in your character’s background that explains why you’re totally badass?

Cung: I think the reason my character is a badass in this movie is basically, when you wake up, and you don’t know where you are and you’ve been surviving for a while, you have to learn how.

EC: Because your character’s been up the longest.

Cung: I’ve been up very long. There’s been other members who’ve been awake longer, but for my character- being an Agricultural Specialist, I must have grown up with martial arts but I also have a nine to five job, and it’s a big job, which is why I’m on this massive ship. Being around the block, staying alive until the moment I get introduced, means that I have some experience, whether it’s kickin’ ass or staying alive or just doing what I do.

EC: Martial Arts exists as its own genre of film, but had it ever been an aspiration of yours to bring martial arts into another genre such as SciFi or fantasy, or something not so strictly based in reality?

Cung: For me, I know martial arts can only take you so far. There’s a lot of martial artists out there, but there’s not that many champions, so I think I have a unique opportunity to position myself in different movies, because of course there’s so many martial arts movies out there but for me, I like to be a little more well versed than just being a martial artist. Doing a movie like this, you need some acting chops. I’ve been working on my acting for a long time, now. When I started getting really popular in martial arts, I was offered a lot of different scripts and small roles. And I figured I better take some acting lessons- and this all started back in 1998- I was off and on with acting until the right projects came along, and here I am today with like, Ben Foster and Dennis Quaid, who are like really cool guys and awesome actors.

EC: Awesome. Was there anything you were really geeky about, as a kid?

Ben: Don’t blow it, Cung.

Cung: It’s always been Bruce Lee. Enter the Dragon.

EC: Clearly.

Antje Traue & Ben Foster after the jump!

Antje Traue is a relative unknown in the States, coming from a theatrical background in Europe (singing! Dancing! Touring!), who is wearing some extremely amazing boots. As it happens, so am I.

Antje: I love your boots.

EC: Oh my God, I love your boots.

Yes, this happens. We proceed to talk about the procurement of our footwear.

Antje: I got them in Melrose, in LA. I was just walking around, I had one day off, and I found them in this market. And usually I don’t buy shoes second hand, because they don’t fit right, but these were just- mine.

EC: And no one else will have them. I saw someone else wearing [mine] in black, and I was like… nooo, my boots…

Antje: I know this feeling.

EC: So was your filming as dependent on CGI as most modern SCiFi seems to be, or were you working with a lot of practical sets?

Antje: You know, we had green screen, of course, but the sets were really remarkable. We had a great team working on the sets- it was just scary, you know, because you walk in these huge halls… We shot in Berlin, in Babelsburg [Studios], and we have these three huge halls and they have the whole spaceship in it. You read the script, and you think “This is interesting”, this and that- and then you come in and it becomes real. They did a great job, it was really fun to act in those sets.

EC: So your character’s a scientist.

Antje: Yes.

EC: Are there any other primary female characters?

Antje: No. I’m by myself in the movie, with all the men, you know? And I took the experience for my character, because she wakes up in this space ship- no food, nothing to drink, no one has survived except her, so it’s about loneliness, right? It’s dark, the ship is dying, so there’s no light. So this is what Pandorum confronts you with, are your primal fears. And then she has to learn really fast to fight for her life, because in every corner there’s something that wants to kill you. It was a special time for me to go and be this character, because it’s about going back to your instincts, to your really pure instincts.

We oggle at Cung’s muscles.

Antje: You know what, when you meet him- I mean you met him- he’s such a nice guy and you think what? This guy is breaking arms, and legs, there’s no way. And then he gives you a hug- and you feel it.

EC: Was there anything geeky or scifi when you were younger that you loved?

Antje: Actually I had my first kiss during Alien.

EC: …I’m trying to think of an appropriate moment for that-

Antje: It’s really just- I know! He was just so cute, and I said well, let’s go to the cinema and he said let’s go to Alien! And I was like… well, all right!

Ah, geek memories.

Ben Foster is Ben Foster. He is particularly Fosterish this day. He does not, in real life, have wings. Before he sits down to chat, he takes a picture with Cung, in which he makes sure his smokes aren’t peeking out of his pocket, since this is going in a martial arts magazine. What a conscientious young man!

EC: So you’re kinda rocking out the genre movies. X-Men, 3:10 to Yuma, Pandorum- is there something about making genre pictures that draws you, in particular?

Ben: No, it’s whatever shows up, there’s no real master plan. What shows up, who’s involved, does it feel like something I’ve already done? So, you know. I like movies, so getting to play in different corners is exciting.

EC: So after the X-Men- did the wings-

Ben: Wore feathers.

EC: So, being in these movies, attending conventions and coming into contact with fans, how have you found that experience?

Ben: The example that makes the most sense is if you make a chair, and somebody says “I like your chair”, that’s gotta feel good. Someone says, “Your chair is interesting… I don’t know if I like it.”, that’s fair game. Someone says “I hate your fucking chair”, that’s fair too. So, it’s nice anybody goes and sees movies, it’s surprising when something comes out. And not because of an industry thing, but because making them is so intimate. So, yeah, it’s a total laugh to be here.

EC: Anything you were geeky about as a kid?

Ben: Nah, just- good old fashioned night terrors.

At this time, we are unsure of whether or not this is in fact a reference to 1993’s Night Terrors starring Robert Englund, but… probably not.

Pandorum opens September 4th, 2009

Tony Noms Reactions

So, throughout college, it was important to me to see EVERY show nominated for Tony. I always see just about every movie nominated for an Oscar (this year got the shorts! But missed a couple foreign, couple doc, The Visitor & Changeling. Marg.) but the Tonys are much more difficult for a variety of reasons. Even with my fake student ID (oh life, how you make me laugh), it's still 25 bucks minimum to see a Broadway show. That costs a lot more than free, which is what it costs to watch every Oscar movie...for reasons that shall remained unnamed for now.

Anyway. This year, so far, I have done TERRIBLY on the Broadway shows front. TERRIBLY. It's a TRAVESTY. TERRIBLE. So, what have I seen? Let's break it down.

-Gypsy. Which was nominated for Best Revival last year. So...doesn't count.

-Billy Elliot. From the top side way back balcony. Couldn't tell if I liked it or not cause I couldn't see a damn thing. Reminded me why I never see shows from the balcony...

-Guys & Dolls. Third night of previews. Had problems, but I LOVED it anyway. Got panned by the critics. I was like, STFU. So YAY Tony nod for Best Revival! Somewhat validates my opinion.

-Slava's Snow Show. I saw 5 years ago. In union square. Don't know if this counts.

-Speed the Plow. GO RAUL GO RAUL GO RAUL WIN WIN WIN FINALLY WIN PLEASE AHHHH HE WAS AMAZING.

-Sidenote. Constantine is nominated for a Tony? Like, from the season of American Idol I didn't watch, Constantine? What? So I need to see Rock of Ages, we've decided.

-Sidenote #2. WTF IS THE NORMAN CONQUESTS, WHY HAVEN'T I HEARD OF IT, WHY IS JESSICA STEVENSON/HYNES IN IT I LOVE HER AND HOW DO I SEE IT RIGHT NOW?

-I couldn't tell you if these Billy Elliot dudes deserve these Tony noms or any wins because I couldn't see any of their faces and couldn't watch any of the performances. Eff you, balcony.

-Darn. No Lauren Graham nom. Damn damn. I loved her. :(

-My favorite lighting designer up for two!! Yay Kevin Adams!

Wow, this is a pathetic year for me and theater. Hair & West Side Story are at the top of my list, then Rock of Ages. Then everything else. Damn, wish I had been in better seats for Billy Elliot. That's upsetting.

OKAY. Long story short. Time to see some Bway shows. Whose with me to rush?!?! LET IT BEGIN.

Last Week on All Things Fangirl

Last week, for some reason, the blog was overtaken by three topics: Swine Flu, 17 Again & Absolutely Random Meaningless Shit. YAY!!! You know what, I take that back. Cause there is nothing random or meaningless about Katee Sackhoff, a Sally Jupiter Art Print or a Goonies Reunion, now is there? IS THERE? Here's what ya missed,

Swine Flu

I got sick and thought maybe I had Swine Flu, which I didn't and even if I did, I would have been just fine. Nevertheless, to combat my sickly boredom, I posted this Beat the Swine Flu game. I thought I did really well, getting 17, until comments & @replies on Twitter revealed the ease with which others got scores like 20 or 23. So then I was sad.

And THEN I got tricked by some fake website made to look like the BBC that Swine Flu was turning people into Zombies (capitalized, obviously) in London. I BELIEVED THAT. I mean, only for a hot second, but still. Turns out the article isn't even from the BBC. Pshhh.

17 Again

EruditeChick and I saw 17 Again and it changed our lives. I wrote a quick paragraph on why it's better than Wolverine and linked to a review I quite enjoy. Eruditechick followed up with a great review of her very own! THAT's how much we liked this movie. Just go see it and understand the brilliance. HOW DO YOU DO IT, ZAC EFRON? HOWWWWWW? And if you follow my Twitter (it sounds dirtier every time) then you'd know that the Zac Efron barbie my friends got as a joke for me 2 years ago is now atop my Geek Shelf, beside my BSG Toaster, Map of Middle Earth, signed Watchmen, signed X Factor #1 and signed photo from Shaun of the Dead.

American Idol

I got pissed off cause Danny Gokey didn't suck this week. SUCK THIS WEEK, GOKEY. PLEASE. GO HOME SO THE TOP THREE CAN BE ALLISON, KRIS AND ADAM, THANK YOU BYE.

Also, sidenote, had a dream last night that Adam Lambert's performance this week involved coming on stage, giving a FAKE, really shitty performance that left everyone flabbergasted, like he was making fun of Gokey for sucking, then was like, just kidding, and performed again immediately and blew everyone's minds. ... That is all.

And I'm Only JUST Seeing This? [Drunk Celebs = Fun!]

I'm not a huge Julia Roberts fan or anything, but this drunken fun from the Tom Hanks tribute at the Film Society of Lincoln Center makes me appreciate her just a little bit more. I don't even understand the JJ Abrams reference, but I'll take it! Plus, it's WAY more interesting than the scene from X3 that's currently on TV, reminding me why this movie sucks. Ugh.

Swine Flu Turning Brits into Zombies...

So I was checking out Nerdcore, as I tend to do, and I came across a post called Swine Flu Zombies! So I thought, haha, yeah, pandemics make people zombies, way to join in on the fun sooo late, Nerdcore. But then I saw the article it was quoting....

From the BBC,

There has been a small outbreak of “zombism” in London due to mutation of the H1N1 virus into new strain: H1Z1.

Similar to a scare originally found in Cambodia back in 2005, victims of a new strain of the swine flu virus H1N1 have been reported in London.

After death, this virus is able to restart the heart of it’s victim for up to two hours after the initial demise of the person where the individual behaves in extremely violent ways from what is believe to be a combination of brain damage and a chemical released into blood during “resurrection.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised the alert to phase six, its highest level, and advised governments to activate pandemic contingency plans.

So I got really freaked out and was like, what the hell?! Zombies?! What's happening?! Then I continued reading the article,

In the latest developments:

* The Netherlands confirms its first case of zombie swine flu, in a three-year-old boy recently returned from Mexico. After passing away early this morning, he rose from the dead and lunged at his mother.

Okay, THAT's not true.

The article ends with this,

Have you been affected by the zombie strain of swine flu? You can send your experiences using the form below. You can also send your questions about the decision to raise the alert and we will send it to our health experts.

So, listen. Zombies aren't real. And the BBC is having some fun with gullible people like me. But...zombies aren't real...right? This article is making fun of how everyone is panicking over nothing, right? WHY DO I THINK ZOMBIES COULD BE REAL?

In other news, after forcing myself to sleep for 12 hours, I think I may be better! Take THAT, Zombie flu!!

17 Again > I Love You, Man

I'm in love with Zac Efron.

No, that's not what I was going to write about. Wait. Okay.

My burning desire for Zac Efron outshines that of the 8 year old girl I babysit.

Wait. Crap. Okay. Wait.

I saw I Love You, Man with no great expectations: It filled those expectations nicely, providing an enjoyable comedy that didn't surprise me but kept me entertained, gave me a few moments of good, real laughter, and featured actors that I, as an actor, enjoy. It was fun. It was nice seeing it with friends. Slappin' da bass did not become a part of my vernacular as, it seems, it has for many and as, I felt at the time, it rather seemed the movie was hoping it would. But I really enjoyed it. Cool beans.

I saw 17 Again with quite a lot of expectations. I expected it to be solidly predictable and dull, genially amusing, and feature Zac Efron shirtless. The opening scene filled several of these expectations. Then the rest of the movie blew my goddamn mind.

The plot is, of course, totally predictable and impossible and kind of silly: That's a given. But the way the characters fill it up, the performances given, the painfully hilarious details of most of the scenes- I was shocked. Even through the seemingly never-ending gales of laughter, I was stunned. The script was clever. The actors were great. And Zac Efron....

Dear God in Heaven, Zac. Efron...

In HSM, which I was forced to watch by my roommate before she departed to play a role in the stage version of the film for a professional theater, we are introduced to a myriad of young people who are all talented enough for the Disney made-for-tv-genre, except Vanessa Hudgeons, who.... who is not good... and, then, we are introduced to Zac Efron. Zac Efron, who is charming and cute, in a kind of vanilla way, but who has an additional spark of something. That little bit of star quality that sets him apart from the other teens in the film. Well, here we have a Zac Efron unencumbered by the ridiculousness implicit in a musical about high schoolers and free from Disney's general mindset. Efron, in 17, is charming, charismatic, sweet, gorgeous, natural, earnest, and fucking hilarious. His sense of comedic timing, urgency, and presence in ever scene is undeniably telling of the potential his future career has. This is not a song and dance man. This is an actor.

And in the first scene he's not wearing a shirt. That's awesome too.

Possibly the most telling sign of the lengths to which Efron will go as an actor as he continues to get better parts, further from the pop idol trappings of the HSM franchise, is his undeniable, extremely enjoyable to the point where you feel a little dirty about it and entirely endearing chemistry with Leslie Mann (who is, as ever, not just funny as hell but vulnerable and believable). The two of them on screen together is unreal.

And every member of the supporting cast is just as committed, just as funny and just as right for their roles. Thomas Lennon as gajillionaire uber-geek Ned Gold is priceless. The relationship he forms with the smart, sharp principal (Melora Hardin) is so funny, and you root for it so hard, your investment in it surprises you. Sterling Knight, who first off... is that made up? Are you kidding me? Sterling Knight? Okay, whatever, own it. Unreal. So, Sterling Knight who plays Efron's son is quite the find. Brings some truly great comedic moments to the screen.

All the high school girls, the jocks, the losers- they're all funny. Everyone holds their own. The movie moves fast and, save one or two comparatively serious moments, never stops making you laugh. Our whole theater was cracking up, wincing, clapping, and shouting "Oh, no, oh, no" at the same time. Also, from a few corners and more than once, "How is this movie this awesome?!".

It's difficult to say.

All that really can be said is that it's the best time I've had at the movies in a while. It combines all the now-common tropes of the new relationship drama- the inclusion of geek culture, the awkward dates, the fish out of water- and uses them all with such dexterity that even though you know where everything's generally ending up, it's still gratifying to get there. Also, and I love the Age of Apatow, but it does something that most of that gang's movies do not: It doesn't rely on the awkward to get its scenes along. It moves just as naturally (with the caveat that, you know, it's a thirty seven year old in a seventeen year old's body and he is thusly coping with teenage life etc. etc. it's MAGIC) and with enough of the crassness of male youth to be hilarious and natural but without the degree of irreverence which most movies in the genre (the relationship comedy genre, not the magic age-reversion genre) posses. Which I enjoyed. Like... I love Family Guy. But I like South Park more.

Yanno?

Just go see the goddamn movie. There's a Naked!Ryan Reynolds trailer attached to it. There, you officially have NO REASON not to go. Immediately. See full post

17 Again > Wolverine

I just have to officially say that 17 Again rocked my face off. In retrospect, I find it blasphemous that I dared to call Wolverine "fun" when I didn't even know what fun was until I experienced Zac Efron in a leather jacket wooing Leslie Mann (it's so wrong!) AND Tom Lennon wooing Melora Hardin with the fact that THEY BOTH SPEAK ELVISH (it's so right!). And seriously, whoever dressed the Ned's house set needs to call me. What was a lightsaber duel doing in that movie?! I don't know! I don't care! But it was awesome! What just happened! Two years ago a good friend of mine bought me a Zac Efron barbie doll as a joke because I cared for him so little. Now I shall place that barbie doll high on my geek shelf and worship it stare at it leave it there and occasionally glance at it accidentally when I'm looking at that area of my room. You win this time, Zac Efron. You win this time. Update: This review by Ashley Awesome pretty much describes why I love this movie See full post

Katee Sackhoff Reveals Her True Nature

This hilarious interview with Katee Sackhoff from the Jace Hall Show (by the way, what's the Jace Hall show?) is a MUST SEE. Here, her...true nature as a drunk with anger management issues comes out. A must see for any Battlestar fan. Just made my day. Though yes, I admit, I'm not doing much today due to the sickness, fine. Thanks to Pete for the tip!
