12 Most Anticipated Television Events of 2012

We’ve discussed the big guns 2012 will be rolling out in cinemas, but the silver screen isn’t the only arena fans are itching to jump in to. Expect 2012 to also be a fantastic year for television, as we see the return of some of the greatest shows the small screen has to offer, as well as the launch of some major new programming. 

1) The Long Awaited Return of Mad Men (beware spoilers)

I CAN’T TAKE IT ANY LONGER. Season 4, in my opinion the best season of Mad Men yet, turned just about everything on its head, a move that’s become somewhat of a tradition atMad Men, pressing the reboot button with every season. Who knows where Season 5 could possibly take us, but when we last left Don Draper and friends, our charming main character had just proposed to his secretary, the free spirited Megan. Can this work out even close to well for anyone involved? Anyone’s gotta be better than Ice Queen Betty, right? It’s been way too long since one of the best shows on television has actually BEEN on television and its return is one of the absolute most anticipated television events of 2012.

2) Game of Thrones Season 2

Can this be a close second? Game of Thrones season one took the EVERYTHING by storm with its groundbreaking guts, commitment to big budget genre and faithfulness to its material. It broke every rule in the book and did so with a beautiful gusto. Season two sees the introduction of a myriad of new characters, including one played by Rose Leslie formerlyDownton Abbey‘s Gwen, and the second book is supposedly so good that even old school fans of the book have been advising me to watch, not read, because seeing these events unfold for the first time on screen will be an unbelievable treat. Will I be wearing my Daenerys end of season one Halloween costume to the premiere party I’m throwing? You bet. Don’t worry though, it’s primarily a nude colored bodysuit. I’m not crazy.

3) Chris Meloni joining True Blood

Bringing some true class to the table, Veteran Purveyor of Awesome, Christopher Meloni, is joining True Blood for season 5. Season 4 graced us with sure to be an Emmy nominated performance by Fiona Shaw, so a gap had to be filled as far as brilliant guest star was concerned. Meloni, who will be playing “an ancient, powerful vampire who holds the fate of Bill and Eric in his hands,” more than fits the bill.

4) Downton Abbey Season 2 Comes to America, Season 3 Airs In Britain In The Fall

I obviously downloaded Downton Abbey Season 2 from across the pond as it aired, but LISTEN, it’s okay, calm down SOPA, I’m gonna buy the Blu-ray anyway AND watch it on American television anyway, so I repeat, everyone calm down. The Emmy winner for Best Mini Series that has since become a full fledged television series, is long form Jane Austen meets old timey British soap and it’s my favorite. Season 2 goes to some very dark, dramatic, pulpy places, which has turned off some viewers, but I’ve loved every moment. This is truly the best ensemble on television, and I encourage you to pick up season one, watch season two (and the christmas special!) and buckle up for season three come the fall. Mary and Matthew forevers.

5) Alcatraz

There has been lots of behind the scenes turmoil as far as this new offering from JJ Abrams and Elizabeth Sarnow (who has since left the show) is concerned, which has made the genre community start to worry, but I’ll be damned if I don’t give this new science fiction program a shot. This story about presumed dead Alcatraz prisoners reappearing in present day, having not aged one bit, stars newcomer Sarah Jones and everyone’s favorite magical island castaway , Jorge Garcia. I’m still hoping for the best, but won’t be surprised if it ends up falling just short of the mark.

6) Smash

Let’s be honest. Glee isn’t quite working out the way we hoped. They cut back on the number of songs per episode, which was always my favorite element of the show, and frankly, have ceased to make much narrative sense since season one ended, if it even made it to then. But I still love musicals, I still love song and dance, and oh yeah, I LOVE JACK DAVENPORT. Smash, from executive producer Steven Spielberg, looks like a show I will be obsessed with, but never admit to obsessing over. Since it’s about putting on a fictional Broadway musical (about Marilyn Monroe yet!), expect lots of fun New York locations and impressive theater related cameos. Oh and actual quality singing by professionals, none of this auto-tune crap. If you’re still “pshhhing”, it’s created by Pulitzer Prize nominated playwright Theresa Rebeck, who also co-produced and wrote NYPD Blue and wrote forDream On.Yes, she also wrote the story (just the story, not the horrific screenplay!) of Halle Berry’s disastrous Catwoman, but hey, the exception that proves the talented rule, okay?

7) The River

The found footage horror-mystery that has been described as Lost meets Paranormal Activity (and created by Oren Pell, the man behind the Paranormal trilogy) that made a splash at Comic-Con by screening its pilot and handing out fun mini branded flashlights, makes its debut on ABC this February. Bruce Greenwood plays an explorer who vanishes under mysterious circumstances. Six months later his family sets out to find him, fully funded by the explorer’s former producer, in exchange for them filming the whole expedition. They are assisted by a collection of supporting characters including the lovely Eloise Mumford, from the short lived Fox series Lone Star, who I’m thrilled to have back on my television set. Fingers crossed the eight episodes ordered by the network stick the landing with audiences.

8) (Formerly the House of Lies slot...but the pilot aired before posting so...) COUGAR TOWN IS COUGAR TOWNY!

I totally forgot Cougar Town was coming back because it's been so long and my whole self is so saddened by the lack of Penny Can, Big Joe (RIP), Big Carl and The Larmy that my mind simply blocked it out so I wouldn't be upset every day. If you're not yet convinced that Cougar Town rules, need I remind you about last season's Community/Cougar Town crossover? Come on, if Abed loves it, you KNOW it's good. The show brazenly makes fun of its title every single week in the opening credits, and has really found its grove as a slightly absurdist show about a bunch of friends who drink a lot of wine. Sometimes while wearing snuggies. Season 3 will see a guest star in Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke as Bobby's recurring love interest and newcomer Briga Heelan as someone Grayson got pregnant years earlier. ABC may have cut the episode order down to 15 from 22, but this show has a rabid and loyal following who know that each of those 15 episodes will be hilarious. GET IT TOGETHER, ABC. 

9) Awake

Perhaps my most anticipated new show of the mid-season, the show (known as REM when the pilot scripts were making the rounds) has gotten rave reviews over its season premiere, drawing positive Inception parallels when it comes to the subject of dreams versus reality, and it stars Jason Isaacs as a man torn between two worlds, one where his wife survives a horrific accident, one in which it’s his son that survives. But which is real? Also starring Laura Allen, Brooke English’s son who took Leo away from Greenelee on All My Children, and Jack Shephard’s son, Dylan Minnette. (This is how my brain works and I like it just fine.)

10) 30 Rock is Back!

30 Rock is one of those magical shows that is so good, I always doubt how good it is. I promise this makes sense. I always think to myself, there’s no way the show can STILL be funny. But it always is. Sure, there are off episodes and off storylines, every show has those, but ultimately, 30 Rock always brings the funny and it’ll be so nice to have Liz Lemon back in my life, making me feel a-ok about how much I love eating sandwiches and making noises instead of saying words.

11) Community Finishes up Season 3 and returns in the fall with Season 4

12) Chuck and Desperate Housewives Come to an End

I have never seen an episode of Desperate Housewives. The fact that it is ending means nothing to me, but it was once a mega sensation, so its series finale is definitely worth a mention. The series finale *I* will be glued to the television for is none other than that of Chuck. Chuck lost me a little bit last season with the constant stream of EVERYONE’S A SPY! combined with EVERYONE’S A FAMOUS GUEST STAR! But this season has be right back on board and I’m loving every moment. I’m actually getting nostalgic for my deep obsession with the show and specifically Zach Levi that I felt during seasons one and two. I’m sad that it’s ending, but thrilled beyond belief that they squeezed five seasons out of NBC and are getting to finish the story they began. Jan 27, “Chuck vs. the Goodbye.”, I’m so there.

The Best Show This Week (11/1)

As some of you may know, I watch 26 shows, not including ones currently off air (i.e. Lost, Chuck, True Blood). That's A LOT of television. I've done the precise math - 22 minutes per sitcom and 44 minutes per drama and it comes out to 16 hours of television a week.

Of these 26 shows, a few always seem to rise to the top every week & stake their claim as the best. So I've decided that every week, I'll post my nomination for best show of the week. (It should be noted - this honor goes to the episode every week that stands out as the best one of its series so far this season, not necessarily the best compared to every other show. Modern Family every week is better than most other shows, but it'll only end up here when it airs its best episode yet :). )

This week belongs to 30 Rock, Season 4, Episode 4: Audition Day

Perfectly written & executed and featuring stellar work from just about everyone in the entire cast, Audition Day had me laughing at loud over & over. Some of my favorite bits -

New York Comic Con Wrap Up - Friday

What a weekend!

The whole All Things Fangirl staff attended the New York Comic Con this past weekend and had a fantastic time. As we were constantly going to panels, walking the floor and drinking hanging out with guests of the con in the after hours, none of us had time to update - apologies!

By now we've been scooped by all the blogs I read, but we Fangirls (and boys) still have our opinions, videos and pictures - so let the wrap up begin with Friday's events!


Alien Trespass



From the studio,

In 1957, a fiery object from space crashes into a mountaintop in the California desert, bringing the threat of disaster to Earth. From the flying saucer escapes a murderous creature - the Ghota - which is bent on destroying all life forms on the planet. A benevolent alien from the spaceship, Urp, inhabits the body of Ted Lewis - a local astronomer - and with the help of Tammy, a waitress from the local diner, sets out to save mankind. An homage to 1950's alien invasion movies with a visual style that masterfully revives the bright, Technicolor look of the era.

My favorite smaller panel of the Con, it's a shame more people didn't know about it, but the crowd that was there absolutely loved what they saw. The panel began with a hilarious featurette on the story behind the making of Alien Trespass. The idea is that this 1957 film, starring the grandparents of modern day actors Eric McCormack, Robert Patrick & Dan Lauria, which was set to be the greatest Sci Fi epic of its day, got the kabosh put on its release after a contract dispute. Now, 50 someought years later, it's been unearthed and will be released in theaters for the very first time this Spring! Most of the featurette, which had snippets of interviews with the "original actors", news footage from the 50s and clips covering the discovery of the film and what it means, can be viewed in segments on the Alien Trespass website. I definitely recommend heading over there and checking them out.


On hand to discuss Alien Trespass were director, R.W. Goodwin, of X Files fame, and Dan Lauria, one of the leads in the film. Here some tidbits they shared:

-The 3 50s sci fi films that Alien Trespass was most inspired by are The Day the Earth Stood Still, It Came from Outer Space, and The War of the Worlds.
-The monster in the film, The Ghota, looks like a 7 foot long penis with an eye in the middle. Woot!
-For the most part, Goodwin only used FX techniques that existed in the 50s. There is one CGI shot that Goodwin challenges us to find.
-The movie is not intended to be a spoof or "laugh riot", but rather a genuine recreation of a 1950s sci fi film. Any humor in the film is the kind of humor we see when we watch those kinds of movies today - totally inadvertent. Goodwin refers to his approach as "intentionally, inadvertently funny".
-The movie was shot over 18 days in Canada (because most of Goodwin's contacts & favorite people to work with are stationed there, due to his time on X-Files, NOT because the film is Canadian. Cause it's not Canadian, Variety.) and the cast had a fantastic time, to quote Lauria, they had "more fun than is legal."
-Dan Lauria appreciated the dedication & talent of the actors, who had no problem shooting scenes in one take, something common in the 50s, but a frightening notion to today's actors. Lauria recalls working on a project where he and a younger actor were asked to perform a 3 page scene all the way through, and when the younger actor freaked out about the length, Lauria assured him that 3 pages isn't long - Richard III is long. I thought that was BRILLIANT. Goodwin specifically sought out actors who had been trained in theater so he knew they could handle the lack of quick cuts.
-The film makes you feel like you are traveling "back to the 50s for 2 hours". But fear not, those with an aversion to long movies! It it runs only 88 minutes.

MTV Biggest Movie Badasses

Movie Trailers - Movies Blog

Interesting list, no? I'm ashamed that I've only seen four of these characters in action cause I've only seen Star Wars, the Terminator films, some Die Hard films & some Alien films. Oops. The crowd seemed a little confused at times since I'm pretty sure it was made up of mostly youngins. But I commend MTV for actually trying to pick the REAL movie badasses instead of just dishing out a list filled with Han Solos & Wolverines...though to me, Han Solo will always be the ultimate Badass. Mmm, sexy Han Solo badass. ... What was I talking about?

All in all a pretty fun panel, glad I went. Brought Friday's 30 Rock cast member spotting total to two. Scott Adsit was hanging out with his friend, artist Mark Brooks, and we chatted with them for a while, cause, how could you not?

As for the rest of the day, EruditeChick and I chatted it up with genius Peter David, I picked up book five of Scott Pilgrim and I finally scored one of those sweet as hell Bat Signal pens from the DC Universe booth (see right). I also tried out the Godfather Part Two game and wished I had any idea what I was doing cause it seems like it could be pretty fun if you have a grasp on any of it. Grand Theft Auto type engine + one of my favorite movies of all time = how could I not like it? Now I just need a video game console...

In real life today, a pilot landed a plane safety in the Hudson River & will probably receive a special honor of some kind for being the first person in 45 years to land a plane in water with zero deaths. This pilot's name was Sully.

TV Week in Review [Round Up]

I'll try to review shows as they air, but because I just got started with this blog, today I'm posting a Week in Review - just a little something about most everything I watched this week.
I watch a lot of tv...and not all of it quality...and there will be spoilers below...you have been warned.

Chuck
Good episode. Nice to see finally meet Jill and even nicer to see Jill realize how effing cool Chuck is. Not entirely sure I trust her, but I'll take it for now.

Gossip Girl
Little J's going through some fucked up shit. I know what it's like to be headstrong teenager, but my version of rebellion usually involved more staying up late and less running away and attempting emancipation. Here's hoping Daddy Humphrey realizes he needs to switch up the parenting technique a bit. As for that crazy Agnes ho, if some insane chick was trying to destroy what was most important to me, I wouldn't just ask her to stop - I'd punch the bitch in the face. I mean, seriously, Little J. Did you really think anything BUT physically stopping her was gonna keep your dresses alive? Too late now.
Boring Aaron continues to be boring, I don't care how many people he's dating.
Loving the Wallace Shawn! He better continue to be awesome, because if it turns out he's not a good guy, I'm gonna feel used.
But still, this episode only gets three stars because Aaron is boring, and not enough Chuck.

Heroes
Okay, was I the only person who loved this episode?
I mean, throw a little Back to the Future Part Two in anything and I'm gonna flip for it, but - no one? Anyone?
And I'm loving this Elle/Sylar business. Even though it seems a tad revisionist considering Elle & Sylar have encountered each other before and showed no signs of familiarity. But I don't expect continuity with Heroes anymore, so it's okay. Please keep up the use of Kristin Bell. She's the best actress on the show and should not be wasted. Watching HRG act on his more villainous impulses isn't my favorite - not sure if I buy it yet - but if it means we get more of Elle & Sylar and their wacky love story, I'm on board!
And since the one two punch of Dark Knight & Entourage, I have a strange obsession with Eric Roberts. A very welcome surprise this week. Can we keep him?
I still have a lot of hope for this show. Maybe it's because I never put it on the same level as Lost or Battlestar so I never expected much in the first place (like for anything on the show to make sense), but I'm still watching. It's superhero bubblegum. Just accept that and you'll stop hating.

Fringe
While the episode before this one had a more interesting case of the week, this week wins on the personal drama front, by far. We got a peak at Olivia's love life pre-cutedead?betrayerboy!
Apparently she was with Bella's dad Billy Burke ages ago but he fucked up their relationship cause he was scared. But he's kinda hot & feels bad about their past and she hasn't gotten to feel much but "whattheFUCKisthat?!" lately, so they make out.
But then Pacey Peter calls and brings her back into whatthefuck land, so she leaves. Damnit, Peter. My watched-soaps-after-school-for-8-years brain has come to the conclusion that we haven't seen the last of Billy Burke. Maybe he gets transferred to Boston after Peter & Olivia have their first kiss in season 3?!
Okay, moving on - the case of the week is a little ehhhh, but only because it's almost an exact mirror of events that have already occurred like Olivia having to talk to cutedead?betrayerguy while he is in a coma and the team going to great lengths to save him, only to discover he betrayed them all. Why are we semi recyling plot lines already?
And wasn't it obvious that Trini Alvarado was gonna turn out to be a bigger part (she's evil?!) considering her part was played by Trini Alvarado and I don't think her career has tanked to the point that she'd be doing U-5s on Fox?
But the fruit cocktail line combined with Matthew Abaddon's what's his character's name? reaction cracked me up, so all is forgiven.

How you frustrate me.
Since Rebecca Kirshner (writer for Gilmore Girls & Buffy) came on board as an executive producer, the show's gotten slightly better, but only slightly. She still has to work with these actors, these characters and the storylines already in motion, so there's only so much improvement even possible. But hey, at least this week they seemed to realize that maybe Naomi doesn't need to have crazy hair and wear ridiculous outfits all the time. A step in the right direction. And Kirshner did say we would see less crying and more bitch from this character who spent the first half of the season annoying the shit of out of me with her endless "tears" and she certainly delivered on that front. Although I don't know how believable it is that Naomi would go from like, pretty nice to MEGA CRAZY BITCH in one episode. I mean, that's A LOT of effort to go to to humiliate someone, when really, Naomi could have just confronted Annie about Blando Ethan in front of everyone and achieved probably an even greater effect. Instead, she flew out the ex boyfriend and hooked up with him? Really? Isn't your family going through a terrible divorce? Where did that money come from? You're telling me you're NOT gonna get in trouble for that?
Must move on, brain shorting out.
Happy to see more of Navid & Adrianna. Michael Steger & Jessica Lowndes are by far the best young actors on the show and deserve plenty of screen time.
Has anyone noticed that Hot Teacher always looks like he just woke up and always makes funny faces when he acts? I don't necessarily mind, just wanted to point that out. But his storyline pisses me off immensely. Mostly because when Jessica Lucas joined the show and had immediate chemistry with Hot Sleepy Teacher, I was like FINALLY a storyline that could be interesting! Then their attraction lasted for about two episodes and now they are like, in a relationship. Why?! Why did it all have to come to a head so soon? They could have dragged that shit on for so long and I would have loved every second. What if Hot Sleepy Teacher found himself crazy attracted to her, but had to fight it cause she is a student, then something happened and he was like "crap" and it wasn't until you know, 6 episodes later that he found out she was 25 and it was okay. Then we STILL could have gotten 3 more episodes of them sneaking around on campus! Point is - wasted storyline. It's a shame.
Still weirded out by the fact that Dixon looks 15 and Silver looks 25.
Also, Blando Ethan finally got me to like him for a half second, when he got all jealous at the restaurant. Kinda cute, no?
And as much as I love Jessica Walter, if my grandma so much as ASKED to sing at my sweet 16 party, I would freak the eff out. I don't care how "well adjusted" Annie is - no teen would ever be okay with that.
Just bring Dylan on, okay?

Privileged
Yes, I watch this show. But no YoungerBlondPaulRudd aka Charlie this week, so it wasn't my favorite episode. Cool to hear Rose sing - if that's the actress' real voice, props to her, she sounded fantastic. More Charlie!

America's Next Top Model
Marjorie rocked my world this week. She's so French & crazy! Why is she the only one who drinks? Analeigh just lost cool points in my book. Elina would have had a drink with you, Marjorie. I found it hilarious how concerned they all were for Marjorie's safety. I mean - they were surrounded by cameras and producers, what the hell did they think was gonna happen? She would be a little embarrassed? Let the girl have some fun.
I still don't understand why Sam didn't go home weeks ago. She is pretty and has nice pictures sometimes and seems fun to hang out with, but she is so NOT a high fashion model. Not by any stretch of the imagination.
I think this one is going to McKey, although I prefer Analeigh and her badass hair.

Top Chef
The girl who got kicked off first really freaked me out.
The guy who got kicked off second was adorable, but probably shouldn't have been there in the first place.
Also, my life is complete now that Top Chef is back on.

Grey's Anatomy
Not that I approve of firing an actress the way Grey's producers did, but at least the characters dealt with it. I was expecting a West Wing Mandy situation, so it was a nice surprise to watch the glorious Sara Ramirez deal with the end of her budding romance.
Sergeant McHottie (I don't know his damn nickname so that's what we're calling him) continues to be smoldering in that I'm-not-that-attractive-but-god-help-me-i'lll-make-you-think-i-am way. Kevin McKidd could totally show up in the next Bond movie as the 007 equivalent to Quantum and then they can have this whole Spidey/Venom type WTF you are just like me you are my doppelganger foil nemesis type of badass relationship.
I don't know WHAT the hell is happening with Denny, but I LOVE it. Holy hell do I find that man attractive. And next week we get Ghost Sex! Capitalized Ghost Sex! Can't wait to find out what's going on here, just as long as it doesn't end with Izzy realizing she has a terminal brain tumor that's makin her crazy so Sondra can get rid of her ass. Please don't be that.
Melissa George could be interesting? We'll see

30 Rock
Not as epically fantastic as last week's Oprah episode, but crazy looks good on Jennifer Aniston and any storyline that semi furthers Jack/Liz shipping is fine with me :)

Oh and ff I had any idea what the hell Night Court was (before my time?), I probably would have enjoyed the episode more.

Entourage
Wow - really enjoyed this episode. Painful at times (being told in front of the whole crew that you are a shitty actor = worst nightmare) but overall enjoyable.
I hate seeing Ari fail and this week, fail he did. He couldn't intimidate Stellan Skarsgard or help Dana prevent disaster. And Poor Vince. I can't wait for him to make a comeback next season. But despite all our characters (save Turtle) going through turmoil at this point in time, it's what the show needed and I'm hooked - which is more than I can say for last season.

True Blood
GREAT episode. I have no clue how this is all gonna be wrapped up next week, but I'm certainly looking forward to it.
Was sad to see Lizzy Caplan go - she's been a great addition to the show. Never knew if her character could be trusted and I loved that. Very well done death scene - so tragic how unaware & helpless Jason & Amy were, off in their hallucinations. Loved it.
Sookie & Sam's relationship keeps getting more interesting. She knows she can trust him now and they have the bond that only sharing an intense secret can give to two people. For the first time, he doesn't creep me out! The scene where Bill came storming in was fantastic. He was so jealous, so hurt, so confused. I hated that girl he turned into a vampire and he did too, so eager to get back to Sookie after everything he just went through for her. It was painful to watch in the best way possible.
What the hell is going on with Tara?! What is Admiral Cain doing here? After seeing her covered in dirt, I thought she'd be a vamp, but the previews for next week make it look like she is out in the daytime. Hmmmm.
The only thing a little disappointing about this episode was that I knew who the killer was last week. It was just a hunch then, but then this week Rene asked if Amy slept with vampires and it was all over. I wonder if they were dropping clues on purpose so we could figure it out or if they were hoping no one saw it coming. But you know, I gotta give em credit. They didn't cheat and I appreciate that.
Next week's gonna be CRAZY. Can't wait.
