Carney Says Farewell To LA and Hello to Broadway!

I had the pleasure of attending Carney's farewell concert this Thanksgiving weekend, and despite the fact that the venue was littered with entirely too many people from my high school, I had a great time. These guys are seriously talented and will fit in well with the Broadway scene next year - a year that will also include the high-octane, non-stop rock opera musical fun-gasm that is American Idiot and Christopher Walken looking for his missing hand in the brand new Martin McDonagh play, A Behanding in Spokane.

Hang on. Let's all re-read that bit about Martin McDonagh and them scream in joy together.

At this concert, Castling and I turned the good ol' reliable iPhone camera on at the exact right moment and captured a fantastic 10 minutes, broken up into three videos below.

The first is Reeve Carney's first public announcement to his fans that he will be taking on the role of Peter Parker on Broadway next year. Here, we're also treated to some fantastic news - since the entire Carney band will be in the orchestra, Carney will be performing occasional midnight shows for their NY fans!

The second, is Reeve's solo cover of the first part of Bohemian Rhapsody.

The third is Carney's amazing cover of I Want You/She's So Heavy.

You may notice that the male lead of this video is Carney lead singer and soon to be Spiderman on Broadway, Reeve Carney, and the female lead is the soon to be Mary Jane, Evan Rachel Wood.

Meet Broadway's Spiderman

I'm sure you've heard by now, but the producing team of Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark has announced their Peter Parker.

His name is Reeve Carney, he's gorgeous, he has an amazing voice and I'm certain he will rock your faces off with his performance.

Reeve is the lead singer of CARNEY, the hot up and coming rock band whose newest single “Love Me Chase Me” was just released. The band’s first full length album, entitled Mr. Green, will be released in early 2010 on Interscope Records. Reeve’s acting credits include Julie Taymor’s upcoming film version of The Tempest and the film version of the acclaimed novel Snow Falling on Cedars.

Julie Taymor continued, “Having recently finished shooting The Tempest with Reeve as the young prince, I am thrilled to cast him in an entirely different role as Peter Parker in SPIDER-MAN. When I first saw Reeve, he was performing with his terrific band Carney. The music of Bono and Edge requires an extraordinary talent— not only is Reeve a great rock and roll singer but his acting is equally fresh and authentic.”

I recently had the pleasure of being an extra in their music video for "Love Me Chase Me" which I'll be posting here as soon as it's released. I went to high school with the Carney family, who are all beautiful, talented, wonderful human beings and I'm thrilled that the world will finally get to know them!

Here's a clip of Reeve's band, Carney, performing at the Roxy in August. That's Reeve on vocals and & his brother Zane on lead guitar. Zane and the rest of Carney will be playing in the pit of Spiderman! Check out how ABSURDLY talented they are below.

Tony Noms Reactions

So, throughout college, it was important to me to see EVERY show nominated for Tony. I always see just about every movie nominated for an Oscar (this year got the shorts! But missed a couple foreign, couple doc, The Visitor & Changeling. Marg.) but the Tonys are much more difficult for a variety of reasons. Even with my fake student ID (oh life, how you make me laugh), it's still 25 bucks minimum to see a Broadway show. That costs a lot more than free, which is what it costs to watch every Oscar movie...for reasons that shall remained unnamed for now.

Anyway. This year, so far, I have done TERRIBLY on the Broadway shows front. TERRIBLY. It's a TRAVESTY. TERRIBLE. So, what have I seen? Let's break it down.

-Gypsy. Which was nominated for Best Revival last year. So...doesn't count.

-Billy Elliot. From the top side way back balcony. Couldn't tell if I liked it or not cause I couldn't see a damn thing. Reminded me why I never see shows from the balcony...

-Guys & Dolls. Third night of previews. Had problems, but I LOVED it anyway. Got panned by the critics. I was like, STFU. So YAY Tony nod for Best Revival! Somewhat validates my opinion.

-Slava's Snow Show. I saw 5 years ago. In union square. Don't know if this counts.

-Speed the Plow. GO RAUL GO RAUL GO RAUL WIN WIN WIN FINALLY WIN PLEASE AHHHH HE WAS AMAZING.

-Sidenote. Constantine is nominated for a Tony? Like, from the season of American Idol I didn't watch, Constantine? What? So I need to see Rock of Ages, we've decided.

-Sidenote #2. WTF IS THE NORMAN CONQUESTS, WHY HAVEN'T I HEARD OF IT, WHY IS JESSICA STEVENSON/HYNES IN IT I LOVE HER AND HOW DO I SEE IT RIGHT NOW?

-I couldn't tell you if these Billy Elliot dudes deserve these Tony noms or any wins because I couldn't see any of their faces and couldn't watch any of the performances. Eff you, balcony.

-Darn. No Lauren Graham nom. Damn damn. I loved her. :(

-My favorite lighting designer up for two!! Yay Kevin Adams!

Wow, this is a pathetic year for me and theater. Hair & West Side Story are at the top of my list, then Rock of Ages. Then everything else. Damn, wish I had been in better seats for Billy Elliot. That's upsetting.

OKAY. Long story short. Time to see some Bway shows. Whose with me to rush?!?! LET IT BEGIN.

Young Hollywood Recreates West Side Story for Vanity Fair [Pretty Alert!]

I love West Side Story and I love photography. Sometimes, I even love Young Hollywood. Like when I was 8-11 and in love with Devon Sawa, Leonardo DiCaprio and Paul Rudd. Some things never change. I'm referring to the Paul Rudd part. It's safe to say I'm quite over Devon & Leo. Okay, what was I talking about?

Ah yes, to celebrate West Side Story coming back to Broadway, Vanity Fair and Mark Seliger held a photo shoot recreating certain famous scenes from the show, featuring Camilla Belle as Maria, Jennifer Lopez as Anita, Ben Barnes as Tony, Chris Evans as Riff and Rodrigo Santoro as Bernardo. As background, they've got Minka Kelly, Drake Bell, Ashley Tisdale, Robert Pattinson, Cam Gigandet, Melanie Diaz, Brandon T. Jackson and more. Okay, so J. Lo is hardly young Hollywood, and I'm not particularly a huge fan of any of the names I just mentioned, but whatever, it's still awesome.

Don't believe me? Take a look at the gorgeous photos for yourself. They could have chosen some better people to act as background characters but I gotta say, Belle, Barnes, Lopez and Rodrigo look pretty damn convincing.
