All Things Fangirl Holiday Gift Guide 2010

Oops. Christmas is in a week. HOORAY FOR EXPEDITED SHIPPING!

This year's list is a mix of things I want, things I own, things I've already bought for my friends, and things I've seen on other gift guides that made me squee. So if you're stuck in your search for the perfect geeky gift for your fannish friends, look no further - we've got you covered.

Extra Lives by Tom Bissell

A must for any video game fan in your life, Extra Lives manages to alleviate any guilt one may feel dedicating hours upon hours to killing zombies, marrying NPCs & assassinating some Creed (just go with it). The book makes a clear & concise argument that video games are not only art, but are capable of telling stories more personally & profoundly than any other art form can. I read the book in three days, but it could have been one if I hadn't purposefully stopped myself. I couldn't recommend it more highly! Buy it here, $15

Time Traveler's Calendar

This calendar takes 95 time travel occurrences and places them on a single timeline. Watch thousands of years of time travel take place over the course of 12 months!

Includes favorites such as Back to the Future, Terminator, Lost and Chrono Trigger!
Yeah, that's a must own. And I own one. Buy one for yourself here, $20. Hat Tip: Slashfilm

Pride & Prejudice Fleece Sweatshirt

I AM SO OBSESSED WITH THIS. I want this so bad. Like, beyond all wanting of anything. It's my favorite style of sweatshirt for one of my favorite books/love stories of all time. I ache with desire for this sweatshirt. ACHE. Buy it for me, or well, people you know in actual life, here - $42 (42! the meaning of life! it's a sign!). The fine folks that make this sweatshirt, Out of Print, make A LOT of awesome shirts & sweatshirts, all featuring "iconic & out of print" book covers. I highly encourage browsing their catalog!

Cinders At Home Cooking Clothes

A delightful Etsy shop featuring aprons, pot holders, and more made from classic geeky bedsheets & the like. My personal favorite was a Star Wars New Hope sweetheart apron that sold today...fingers crossed it's because someone bought it for me...that's TOTALLY plausible, right? But if you know someone who cooks and is fan of Nightmare Before Christmas, Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mario, Zelda, etc. this is the Etsy shop for you. Click here to check out her goods - $16-$39

Sweet 80s Movie Print Set

If you are a fan of Retowhale on Etsy (we were all about her director coasters in last year's gift guide), you may want to check out her 80s Movie Print Set. The artwork is also available on coasters, but not in time for Christmas, I'm afraid. But if you are interested in her prints, she can get them to you by the 23rd if you order today, the 17th! Other available prints include Rushmore, Pulp Fiction & The Royal Tenenbauns. Click here to buy one - $24.

 80s Filmography Shirt

A different kind of tribute to the films of the 80s, this time on a t-shirt, minimalist in style, and focusing on a broader range of genres. For your friend who identifies with being a geek, or at least film geek, but hasn't yet taken the step toward wearing it proudly, this shirt is a grade a geek garb gateway drug. What did I just type. I'm actually not even sure I can name all the movies on there, which means it's even cooler than I am. You should buy it. Here. $20. Hat Tip: Io9

Comic Wallets

Super cool shop that creates wallets out of comic book pages. Right now they have wallets made from 8 Marvel titles, 11 DC titles, plus Simpsons, Star Wars, Walking Dead, Scott Pilgrim, Transformers and more. The perfect gift for any comic lover whose wallet may be looking a little worn down. Buy them here, $10-$30.

Little Otsu Anything

Discovered the Little Otsu site thanks to the Tribeca Film Festival's Gift Guide and I absolutely adore everything they make - to do lists, planners, film notebooks, and so on. They're inexpensive, quirky, unique & practical. A great gift for the Type A geeks in your life. Check out all their items here - $10-$16

Game of Thrones/Walking Dead/Hunger Games/Green Lantern/Powers

We all have those friends that love to be up to date on whatever the next big Geek thing will be. Surprise that friend with not only your generosity, but your knowledge of both them & the geek world around you by tapping into the zeitgist with one of the books listed above. Game of Thrones for the fantasy film/tv lovers, Walking Dead for anyone watching it (so, everyone), Hunger Games for the sci fi film fans, Green Lantern TPBs, (the Geoff Johns era, staring with Secret Origin & Rebirth), for the superhero movie lovers, and if you REALLY want to be ahead of the game, some Powers books, for fans of either superheros or crime/mystery who don't even know yet how much they are going to love the forthcoming FX show. $10-$20, anywhere, just give em a google.

Eco Friendly Tote Bags

Celebrities, art, landmarks, subway stops, pets - the list of images printed on these tote bags goes on and on and on - 175 pages worth of on and on in fact, so if you're super stuck, this is the place to go. The Anderson Cooper bag featured above happened to crack me up, but it doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of this sites' offerings. Click here to browse - $18.

Arclight Gift Card

Obviously this requires that the recepient live in Los Angeles, but for a film lover who isn't a journalist (and thusly on every screening list) - what's better than free movies at the best movie theater chain in the country? I mean, you know, I'll take one at least. Buy em here - $5-$200.

Lost Encyclopedia

We all have those friends who love Lost and will continue to love Lost, questionable final season or not (for the record, I loved it), for the rest of ever. This comprehensive encyclopedia is a wonderful addition to any Lost lovers collection and can maybe even help clear up any lingering questions...? I own it. I love it. Buy it here - $25.
Lego Hogwarts Set

A perfect gift for that geek couple in your life, with kid or without. If anyone says they don't like legos, they aren't a real person. Or a real geek. Or a human. Whatever, it's nonsense, is my point. This amazingly awesome I want it set is a great project for couples or roommates to work on while sipping on hot chocolate during the holiday season. Or while sipping on whiskey turning whenever. It's expensive, but it's LEGO HOGWARTS. Buy it here - $150.

Character Clinks

This gift would be geared towards your geek friends who happen also to be big into the wine scene and/or hosting events. The Clinks Etsy shop has plenty of fun wine (and beer!) clinks to make sure no one loses track of their drinks at a party. My favorite part of the Mad Men set is the inclusion of Dick Whitman. Loltown. Other sets include James Bond, Star Wars, and The Beatles. To check out the complete collection, head here - $17-$34

Zombie Combat Manual

I mean, you gotta be prepared right? If watching The Walking Dead is starting to make you question your ability to survive a zombie outbreak (please let their never be a zombie outbreak), pick up this book and get a learnin'. Buy it on Amazon - $11

Comic Location Art Prints

Wow. Gorgeous, right? I want this. I want this on my wall! But I can't put something like this on a wish list OR buy it for myself...I need to hope someone randomly comes across it and decides to get it for me. Such is the case with all decorative wall hangings I suppose. But man oh man do I love this. The artist, Justin Van Genderen, also made prints for Metropolis, New York & Neo Tokyo. See them all here. $18.

Back to the Future Card Game

For the film geek who is ALSO a board game nerd. Like me. Citadels is my jam. So Citadels + Back to the Future = let's DO this thing. Buy it here. $16 See full post

Things That Are True: I Am Buying These

I want to be Hit-Girl and I want to marry (...yes...marry...not anything less virtuous than that....of course not...) Kick Ass so it seems only natural that I buy these figures for myself. Though the smart thing to do would be to wait until Comic Con so I can make a point of going to the Entertainment Earth booth to buy them w/o shipping costs and because I love having "Toy Goals" at Comic Con. I'll get there during preview night and get meself a pack before the other 129,999 people get a chance to pick one up and I'll immediately take them out of the box (an important lesson I learned, courtesy of @BurnettRM - toys are meant to be taken out of the box!) and set them up with my Nite Owl, mask-less Rorshach, Tarantino as a Crazy 88, Joker bobble-head and my army of mini-mates. Oh and my custom made Daniel Faraday unpainted action figure WHAT HOW COULD I NOT ORDER THAT?!

Lost Bobbleheads = WANT

I'm very particular about my Bobbleheads. I only have one. It's the Joker from The Dark Knight. It's awesome and scary and the first thing I ever wrote about this blog. It is also broken because my cat knocked it over. But that's irrelevant. Unless you wanna buy me a new one. Or some super glue.

When the Lost toys stopped being made my Todd Mcfarlane, I was sad. When Bif Bang Pow took over, I was angry. But then I realized. While Bif Bang Pow may suck at action figures,

Case in point:

AWESOME

NOT AWESOME

They are really fucking good at bobbleheads. Not only are they good at em, but they made em out of the BEST CHARACTERS SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

FULL OF FIREY WIN!

Ben was a Comic Con exclusive, Richard, Faraday & Edgar come out in July, and Locke & Hurley hit stores in August. To pre-order these figures, click the smaller image of it below! I have a custom made Faraday figure coming my way, so if you wanna get me a present in the form of a Bobblehead, I'll take Richard or Locke. Kthxbye. Oh did I mention they are only $13? I repeat: WIN.

Mad Men Barbies: Somewhere Between WANT and WTF

Reasons why this is WANT:

- MAD MEN BARBIE DOLLS
- I like collecting shit
- MAD MEN BARBIE DOLLS
- This paragraph,

Gracefully molded of Silkstone®, a material that resembles the look and weight of porcelain, each doll is stylized in iconic costumes from the series, and comes with accessories true to their show counterparts. Don Draper wears his classic, polished red-lined suit and comes accessorized with a hat, overcoat and brief case; Betty Draper's classic look is captured with unparalleled detail, from her faux pearl necklace to her pumps; Joan Holloway looks chic in a purple skirt suit and perfectly styled coif with her staple accessory - a pen necklace; and Roger Sterling is looking dapper in his monogrammed shirt.

Reasons why this is WTF:

- I can only display my Joan doll if I take her out of the collector packaging to stuff her Barbie outfit with enough padding to make her look like the real woman Christina Hendricks is HELLO
- 75 bucks each? EACH? That's more than the custom made Daniel Faraday action figure I bought, and only like 7 of those exist, and it's Daniel cussing Faraday for fuck's sake! (Because cuss' sake is awkward to both type and say.)

Mad Men Barbies - AMC
Hat Tip: @Canakatydid

Side note of mega fun!!!!

Mawphoto.com created his OWN Mad Men Barbie Dolls with no 75 dollar price tag. 75 dollars?! That's a year of unlimited trips to Disneyland! 75 bucks?! That's more than a perfectly respectable, gets the job done, 500 piece set of poker chips!

All Things Fangirl Holiday Gift Guide

Well it's that time of year again! Where I buy people presents and they buy me presents and everyone is happy.

Over the past few weeks I've seen a bunch on shit on the Internets that I am dying to own, so I thought I'd share them with you guys in the hopes that (either you buy them for me, or) they turn out to be the perfect gift for someone you know this holiday season.

So, without further ado!

Super. Emo. Harley Quinn.

I am a huge Harley Quinn fan and do not have NEARLY enough HQ stuff on my Geek Shelf. She is one of my all time favorite characters. Created by the glorious Paul Dini for the Batman Animated Series, she isn't even from the comic books, but is so effing cool, that she's part of the official Batman canon anyway. That's not easy to do. I want this art print on my Geek Shelf so bad it HURTS MY SOUL. Oh. There was only one left. So I bought it. Oops. $20 well spent.

See other Super Emo limited edition art prints here and while you're at it, buy Eruditechick an Emo Rogue.

More gifts after the jump!

TALKING DUG

It's a Dug. Who talks. JUST LIKE IN THE MOVIE OMG. I have a talking Boo doll from Monster's Inc that I love ever so much, and it seems appropriate that the other talking inanimate object I possess and regularly play with should also be from a Pete Docter movie. And only $16.50?!?! WANT.

Buy it for me here

Where the Wild Things Are Notebooks

I love Where the Wild Things Are and I LOVE MAX and I love small notepads. These lovely items are only 4 bucks each so if you are looking for a cheap, but awesome & meaningful purchase for a wild thing, this is the way to go.

Buy them here.

The Office Manager shirt

Cause I love me some Joany! Ranging from $15-$22 and available in various materials, colors & sizes, this is a great gift for that Mad Men fan who thinks Joan is the cat's meow. Yeah, I just said cat's meow. And I MEANT IT. Thanks to @manostorgo for the tip.

Buy it here

Tina Fey Is God Tote Bag

While I don't think I have the balls to walk around sporting this clever tote, if you know anyone who does, 25 bucks is a fine price to pay to make someone's jaw drop to the floor with joy & utter disbelief. I mean, what a strange, strange item. A must-have for any 30 Rock lover familiar with iconic 60s graffiti.

Buy it here.

Favorite Director Coaster Series

I'm OBSESSED with these. I want a set. Please. I'll take Spike Jonze, Quentin Tarantino and some combination of Wes Anderson (You won me over with Fantastic Mr Fox, Wes), The Coen Brothers, Woody Allen & Martin Scorsese. I mean. HOW. COOL. ARE. THESE. A complete set is 48 bucks, so this gift isn't exactly on the cheap side, but DAMN is it cool.

Buy them for me here

Anything by Brandon Bird

This guy is a genius. Head to his site and try to tell me I'm wrong. Both last year and this year I've purchased xmas presents from this artist, because he is simply awesome. I mean, look at those. LOOK AT THEM. And these are just the tip of the iceberg. Most drawings are available in shirt or print form and most of the paintings are available for purchase as art prints. If you really wanna throw down, you might even be able to snag an original. (While we're at it, let's put together an art show featuring Bird, M.S. Corley, Tyler Scout and Brandon Schaefer, Tom Whalen, and Olly Moss, shall we?)

Buy Bird's work here

As we get closer to the holidays, another gift guide may appear, but for now, I hope this has been helpful!

Mondo in LA TONIGHT!!! [Event]

Well, this is upsetting.

Of course I have plans on this Friday night, the only night that Mondo is in town and holding an event at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles. On Melrose, in fact, right next to Golden Apple! Double whammy of awesomeness.

Here's the official write up,

Friday, November 20th at Gallery 1988, Mondo will be setting up shop for the night with lots of our friends providing live art. Skinner will be on hand watercoloring a limited edition Medusa art print we printed special for this show. Kevin Tong will have a new art print for sale (just got that image in and it looks incredible) and Harry Diaz will be screen printing shirts and prints by hand live in the store!

Not only will all of these guys be hanging out, but Mondo will also have shirts, toys, and some exclusive and never before seen posters that we printed especially for this show.

Here's one of the exclusive posters that will be shown tonight, from one of my all time favorite movies!

I'm so upset I can't go, augh. If you live in the LA area and are awesome, head over to Gallery 1988 tonight & have an amazing time.

STUFFED TALKING DUG [WANT]

Find out what's on the canine mind with our ''Up'' Talking Dug Plush Toy. This soft and fuzzy stuffed toy dog can really talk from a faux ''radio'' collar when you squeeze his left paw. While his funny thoughts may be taken quite literally, you'll have to decide for yourself when to give this Dug stuffed toy a hug. This big and friendly canine Dug is one of the stars of Disney/Pixar's animated adventure, Up. Imported.

Up Makes Me Happier [Photo}

I know this picture is old news, but I just saw Up and it took my breath away. Laughing and crying for 90 minutes straight. Hands down best movie I've seen yet this year. I'll call it now - Best Picture nomination. Just saying.

By the way, if anyone comes across either a stuffed, talking Dug or a statue with Kevin asleep on one foot over sleeping Dug...please link me so I can buy them for myself. I just won't spend money on food that week. Done and done.

Last Week on All Things Fangirl

So this past week was a little crazy cause I randomly had a lot to do and there wasn't too much I felt inspired to blog about. As a result, most of the posts are about random silly shit instead of anything that actually matters, but hey - we need those weeks sometimes, no? Next week I'll be bringing back my Idol posts that I couldn't get to this week (though I may have actually predicted correctly for once, grrr). Is it true they are doing the top 100 iTunes songs? Cause...that's one hilarious list. All crap, then randomly Don't Stop Believeing and Tracks of my Tears. And a song by Muse. Should be an interesting show. P.S. Did anyone watch the Streamys last night?

Let the round up begin!

- Knowing poster giveaway! I have tons of Knowing posters and nowhere for them to go. Enter our contest and take some off my hands!

- The results of my Top 5 TV Shows of all time poll on Twitter

- My choice for the Audience Choice Streamy award. They didn't win :(

Games (by Stealth Bear!)

- Batman: Arkham Asylum video of actual gameplay. Can't wait!

- Write up on Settlers of Catan. I wanna play!

Weird/Cool/Silly Shit

- Custom My Little Ponys that look like The Joker, The Bride, Slave Leia and more! WANT. One day when I'm crazy rich, Harley Quinn is mine.

- A stick figure version of Lee & Kara's final scene together on Battlestar Galactica

- I got some Lolcats magnetic poetry and essentially went insane for a short period of time.

- Caturday Cool Shit: Compilation of Pixar characters as humans, an awesome David at the Dentist shirt, a link to Erik Lundegaard's blog where he counted down his top five most used movie quotes, and a link to sign the petition to reunite the Saved by the Bell cast.

- Muppetstar Galactica. It's only 20 seconds, but it's an awesome 20 seconds. See full post

Geeky My Little Ponys [WANT]

In checking my daily blogs, I came across something too bizarre & awesome not to post about.

Courtesy of Topless Robot, a Slave Leia My Little Pony.

He calls it "disturbingly attractive" and says "I figured now was as good a time as any to make the boys feel awkwardly yet sexually attracted to a toy horse." Bwhahaha. Well done, Topless Robot. Well done. I am hoping to aide your mission by posting this picture here too.

The pony was made by Spippo, who has made a bunch of other awesomely geeky ponys as well. Some of my favorites, My Little Poison Ivy, My Little Bride, My Little Harley Quinn, My Little Han Solo & My Little Crybaby, pictured below:

Be sure to head to her gallery for My Little Jack Sparrow, the awesomely disturbing Chewbacca, My Little Skeletor and much more.

Man one of these would go so well on my Geek Shelf...My Little Bride can hang with my Tarantino as a Crazy 88 action figure & My Little Harley Quinn would go perfectly with my Joker Bobble Head. Which reminds me, I should continue with my Items from the Geek Shelf series... See full post
