Heading to Starfest! [Event]

Heading off to Starfest in Denver for tonight and tomorrow and will be tweeting throughout. Using the word "tweeting" in a sentence always makes me feel like kind of a douchebag. As does using the word "douchebag" in a sentence. Okay, I should stop now.

Anyway, I used to go to Starfest all the time when I was a kid, so I'm looking forward to revisiting it. Though apparently it's in a new venue? No more Holiday Inn? :(. Oh well. Shall still be awesome.

I'll try my best to report on Orphan, Katee Sackhoff's Q&A, Battle for Terra & 9. And try even harder to get my Frak hat signed by Katee... See full post

PaleyFest '09 Dollhouse Event!

Went to the Paley Fest Dollhouse event last night & had a great time! Joss introduced the episode "Needs" then brought out Elizabeth Craft, Sarah Fain, Eliza Dushku, Fran Kranz, Dichen Lachman & Miracle Laurie for the panel.

Before getting into a recap, just wanted to say that Dollhouse is really a show that lends itself to multiple viewings. Pretty much every episode I've seen two or three times now, and each time I notice something new, something deeper. I love this show.

The clip chosen especially for this audience was from the dollhouse episode of Twilight Zone featuring Robert Duvall. Very appropriate choice.

Highlights/video from the panel after the jump!

Joss discusses the infamous 13th episode

- Joss calls the 13th episode the "strangest, most awesome thing [Fox] has ever had"

- Episode 12 is also fantastic, as it's written by Tim Minear and how does Joss describe Minear? "That boy's not well"

- Joss: Dollhouse had "an abnormally difficult birthing process that I was abnormally whiny about"

- They have not shot a single episode in their airing order

- Eliza says she "has multiple personalities" in real life, that everyone in her family has ADHD and embraces it, so something like Dollhouse was perfect for her

- Eliza's favorite roles on Dollhouse so far have been the tomboy from episode 2 and Esther, the blind woman

- In the next episode, Eliza plays a 50 year old dead woman

- The original first scene of Dollhouse, Adele pitching to a client, is now in episode 13

- Fran said Tahmoh saw the reshoot of the pilot as a "second chance" to do even better. Fran agrees, saying he saw it as "more an opportunity than anything else."

- Joss: "My dream in life is there will never be a term 'typical Joss Whedon show'"

- Elizabeth & Sarah on Joss: "[We're] not worried about how he's portraying women."

- A reference was made to a "penis puppet" that no one in the audience understood. Things got awkward.

- Joss finds the lack of Dollhouse's perameters to be limiting - more difficult to figure out how to write a different kind
of story every week (caper, thriller, romantic comedy, etc)

- Joss on the big reveals we've witnessed so far, "Dude. Just wait."

- Miracle on what she told her friends when Mellie was introduced, "I promise I end up cooler than that"

- Mellie's reveal that she is November is one of Eliza's favorites

- Dichen has a scar on her leg from shooting the last episode that aired

- Sidenote: Loved hearing Dichen's badass accent

- Dichen loved playing the dorky fan from episode three the most. She and Joss agreed it's cause that character is the most like her, haha

- Someone asked Eliza if Echo choosing to be implanted in this past week's episode was a pivitol moment. She responded "Yes. It is."

- "The [sleeping] pods are WAY comfy" - Miracle

- Sidenote: Miracle is incredibly charming. Fran is incredibly awkward. But super adorable.

- Fran on Topher, "His genius is so great, he doesn't connect to anyone...he has no life...he's a kid playing with his toys...an obnoxious, cocky kid."

- Only person he has some sort of obedient relationship with is Adele

- The audition for Topher was the "Bison scene" with Boyd, a scene which we've apparently scene that was originally much longer

- Joss originally conceived of Adele as a "Dragonlady" and never thought Olivia would agree to play the part. But she as an actress "is so sympathetic, it "rejiggered [his] concept of who Adele was"

- For every actor on stage, when they left the room, the producers KNEW they were perfect for their roles

- Joss changed his mind and decided that yes, there should be more going on with the Dollhouse other than just private engagements

- Fran didn't know "Mike" was the military code for "M". Teehee.

- Code names ARE reused. Sierra is the 2nd Sierra. Joss hasn't thought about the fact that there are probably more than 26 dolls in the house right now...

- Fran wants a scene in season two of Topher shopping for groceries and running into Paul Ballard in the frozen foods section

- Enver, who plays Victor, is claustrophobic. Dichen, who thinks he is "adorable", had to save him when the crew didn't realize he was claustrophobic and didn't remove him from a sleeping pod right away

- Joss says being on set is very "lovely & calming", just like we'd suspect

- Joss enjoys working on the "scale TV brings" more so than internet or film

- What the characters do & where the characters go are extremely influenced by the actors

- Joss : A.I. is the "biggest influence on Dollhouse"

- The art corner is Eliza's favorite part of the set

- Someone asked how much we would know about the overarching story by the end of season one, to which Joss replied "35%. There will be many questions left to answer"

Charlyne Yi Looking for Band Member!

Checked Charlyne Yi's blog today as I've become a bit of a fan of hers and noticed this,

Looking for Band Member

I am looking for a male who can sing, and play either bass or guitar.

But I would be playing rhythm guitar. So they would need to be able to play well enough as to play something other than the same as me.

If you are interested please upload a youtube video of your audition playing/singing an original song and send it to me. I think eventually I'll have live auditions but right now I am overwhelmmed with work. So videos is the quickest way.

REQUIREMENTS:
You must live in Los Angeles and not be crazy

This is the sort of music I play with my band:

So thought I'd repost it here in case you fit that description! And yes, she is the comedian who is also Michael Cera's girlfriend. See full post

Paley Center's Dr. Horrible Event

Got to attend night #4 of the Paley Center Festival, celebrating Dr. Horrible, last night at the Cinerama Dome. It should be noted - this is the first ever web series to be honored by the Paley Center!

The evening began with an introduction to this year's festival - a montage featuring bits from each show with a panel this year. Our particular audience threw some cheers/applause to Dr. Horrible, Dollhouse, Pushing Daisies, Battlestar, plus lesser, but still existent cheers for Fringe, Big Love, Big Bang Theory & Swingtown. Boos for The Hills. Right on.

We then got treated to a clip chosen especially for us from an episode of the animated Superfriends that featured the Justice League & Legion of Doom battling it out in space.

Then Joss came up and said hi and we all watched Dr. Horrible together. In the DOME! Badass. It was AMAZING watching it with an audience on that ginormous screen. When it finished, the panel, featuring Felicia Day, Nathan Fillion, Maurissa Tancharoen & Jed, Joss & Zack Whedon began!

I tweeted throughout the event, but in case you missed it, all the highlights from the panel after the jump! And click here for photos from the event.

-Would Dr. Horrible exist if there were no writer's strike? Joss - "I doubt it"

-Shot the whole thing in six days & got run of the Universal lot because of Joss' good relationship with Universal's head of production after Serenity

-The same horse that played Bad Horse appeared on Angel and will appear in the next episode of Dollhouse! Bad Horse was created by Ben Edlund who had first pitched the character for Angel.

-Right after shooting Dr. Horrible's final shot, Joss went into a bathroom, put on a suit, and came to the Paley Center's 10 year Buffy reunion

-Nathan Fillion - "I can't tell you how much joy it brings to my heart that Neil couldn't make it"

-Nathan makes a mean 7 layer bean dip. And Neil does not!

-Nathan wouldn't mind having "The Hammer is my Penis" on his headstone

-Felicia Day had tonsillitis during the first read thru. The first read thru which Neil, Nathan and Simon Helberg all forgot about

Video of Nathan on his singing/acting ability

-Despite four years of opera training, Felicia was incredibly intimidated and didn't think she was good enough to be in Dr. Horrible

-All you really need to pull something like this off, says Joss, is the "spirit to do it"

-Sondheim is an "unavoidable influence if you are writing something that's good" - Jed

-Considering a sequel to Dr. Horrible that may appear on the stage

-Whedon brothers grew up listening to showtunes. Jed says this accounts for their popularity in high school.

-Zack wrote the Cap Hammer penis line and is "very proud" of it

-Felicia: "Dr. Horrible will be looked back on as the turning point for web content" & a "seminal work"

-The Guild was the first series Joss Whedon watched on the Internet & he asked Felicia for advice throughout the entire process of Dr. Horrible. She schooled everyone on Internet marketing, including agents/execs.

-Joss has yet to join twitter because he "thinks it might be dirty" though everyone on stage was encouraging him to join, Felicia saying "You would be a great twitterer!" (Nathan Fillion ended up joining after the panel!)

-The evil lab in Dr. Horrible is an actual evil lab, owned by one of Joss' friends. The tubes in the background all dispense alcoholic drinks.

-Simon Helberg is a black belt in karate

-Joss is performing his commentary song "Heartbroken" on a live "This American Life" coming up

-Joss, along with Drew Goddard, is of the belief that you have to be careful with what you reveal. They don't wanna blog during Cabin in the Woods cause they want everything to be a complete surprise. With Dr. Horrible, Joss made sure that the words "Tragicomedy" or "twist" were never used before the show's release, so the end would be a complete shock to the audience. Though Joss admits that the ending "made people hate me a lot"

-Trailer leaked because Jed uploaded it to Vimeo to test the player and "like a genius," named it Dr. Horrible

-They joked about Jed asking before they made Dr. Horrible "We're only doing this to be rock stars at Comic Con, right?"

-Joss was a huge NPH fan, saw him in Assassins, loved his voice & comedy chops. Turned out he was old friends with Amy Acker & sang at her wedding, which when witnessed, caused Joss to go into "Full Squee"

-How would Captain Hammer be different in a sequel? Nathan - "I would wear a darker outfit...to symbolize the darkness. And I'd grow my hair our and do a Pompadour."

-Felicia: "Trying to be one of the cool kids was never my goal." I love her.

-Felicia re: Dollhouse's 13th episode: "Sorry about that Twitter thing I did"

-Joss re: Dollhouse's 13th episode: "Wait til you see Felicia's role. And you'll have to wait."

-Lots of people see webisodics as getting a foot in the door in Television, but Felicia enjoys creating her own work that no one else would ever let her do

-Someone asked what happens if you bounce Wonderflonium? Joss - "It will cause me to Twitter"

-If you go to Myspace.com/darkhorsepresents, you will find a Moist comic & a Captain Hammer comic. On June 1st a Penny comic will be released and soon after, a Dr. Horrible comic

-Someone asked Joss why he went back to Fox for Dollhouse. His answer - "Eliza. I don't care, she's worth it." Awwww.

-Influences on Dr. Horrible? Joss says James Gunn's The Specials (I love that movie!), The Boys and Powers (I love that comic!)

And that about does it! I have a video from the event that I'll try to get up later and don't forget - I'll be live tweeting tonight from the Dollhouse panel! Be sure to head over to Twitter.com/loquaciousmuse around 7pm PST for live updates!

American Idol Cinema Week Predictions - 4/15/09

Quick thoughts on the performances - will update tomorrow with predictions! Also, I may be intoxicated right now, so please excuse any typos. Or any lack of sense.

Allison started us off on a predictable note, with I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing, but you know, I was actually okay hearing that song tonight with Allison singing it. She sounded great, she changed some parts up, and actually ended up one of my favorites of the evening.

Anoop probably delivered his best performance yet, singing tonight's second totally predictable song, Everything I Do (I Do It For You). But one that I love. So it's okay. Bryan Adams, swoon. What? That's not that weird. I still don't think he will or should ever have a shot at winning, but he was actually quite good this week. Not sure he took Tarantino's advice though...

Adam didn't sing what I wanted him to, which made me oddly sad, but he was still fantastic. I mean, his vocals rocked. Just can't help but be disappointed. He picked Born to Wild over Bowie, Queen, The Pixies, Radiohead! Oh well. Still awesome.

Matt sang Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman, a song I thought he might sing and AUGH he COULD have been awesome. Iiii don't know what happened. He added too many frills. Damnit. Okay, it was really not very good. I mean, the studio version will be awesome and I may download it. MATT. WHY? Please don't get home

Gokey was the Gokey yet again. Sang some crap from some crap, but meant it this time. Sounded nice, he was sincere, but, whatever, wasn't great, same ol' crap. WHY ARE THEY SO EASY ON HIM? Only difference between this week and every other week - Gokey meant what he was singing this time.

Kris sang a song I semi-suggested with Falling Slowly. Thought he could/should do something from Once, but suggested Lies, as it has way more range than any other song in the film. Even though I wasn't sure about Falling Slowly per se, I still thought he did a great job. Switched up some parts, made his own, was totally adorable, connected to it insanely, made me swoon. Loved it. Really curious as to what Simon would have said.

Lil doesn't know what she is doing at all. Go home already. This is really frustrating. It makes me sad, but she is just not good.

Update:

My bottom three: Lil, Danny, Matt (Sorry Matt!)

My prediction for the bottom three: Lil, Matt, Allison - I wanna say Lil, cause it should be here, but it may very well be Matt. I just hope not.

EW's bottom three: Danny, Allison, Lil

Dial Idol's bottom three: Kris, Matt, Allison (exCUSE ME?)

Dr. Horrible at the Paley Center

Tonight I'm going to the Paley Center Festival's Dr. Horrible event at the Arclight with my brother and my parents, cause my family is just that awesome :).

They'll be screening Dr. Horrible and doing Q&A with Felicia Day, Nathan Fillion, Maurissa Tancharoen & Jed, Joss & Zack Whedon. Should be a great time! I'll be tweeting while I'm there if anything cool/interesting happens.

You can follow me on Twitter by clicking here and then clicking follow! Wow! Easy!

Will write up the event either later tonight or tomorrow. See full post

More Vague Than Top Downloads? Possibly!

The theme for Idol this week is Songs from Cinema...whatever that means. Any song used in any movie ever? So, more or less wide open is what we're saying? Sounds good to me! This week is especially crucial for two people - will Lil pick I Will Always Love You or You're Gonna Love Me, thus sealing her fate as the next to go home? And what does the option of songs from musicals do to Adam? Is American Idol, as MTV.com worries, one giant Broadway audition for Adam? Or will he continue to surprise us and not choose something from a musical? Or if from a musical, not an obvious one? Below, are my thoughts & predictions for tonight's show.

Adam - We've all seen how smart Adam is, which leads me to believe if he DOES pick a song from a musical, it won't be well known or very predictable. If he does go the musical route, I'm hoping for Heaven on their Minds from Jesus Christ Superstar. It's a song I love anyway, it requires a voice and some serious rocking out. Plus, I bet you no one in that audience has ever heard it. Ever. Like. Ever. But this night also brings with it the opportunity for Adam to finally touch Bowie (Labyrinth Soundtrack), Queen (Don't Stop Me Now - Shaun of the Dead), The Pixies (Where is my Mind - Fight Club) Bjork (Any of Dancer in the Dark) or joy of joy, Radiohead (Fake Plastic Trees - Clueless, Exit Music - Romeo & Juliet). One way or another, he is the one to watch as he will smash our faces with his vocals no matter what he chooses. But please avoid Phantom, Chicago, etc if possible. Rent, Rocky Horror, Hedwig & Jesus Christ Superstar are more acceptable.

Allison
- Can't wait for this one. Lots of various sites are hoping Allison goes for Baby, It's You by Smith from the Death Proof soundtrack. Fitting, considering this week's mentor! Also off a Tarantino soundtrack, Allison could do Son of a Preacher Man (Pulp Fiction). Also, any of the Dana Fuchs covers from Across the Universe, especially Oh Darling. On a related note, she could also do well with Live and Let Die from...Live and Let Die. Actually, there are probably a bunch of Bond songs Allison could have fun with. If she goes the musical route, Rent would probably suit her best. She could sing the shit out of Lady Marmalade (Moulin Rouge), but she's better than that and I hope she sings something less full of suck. Might I also suggest the Across the Universe version of I Wanna Hold Your Hand? That would be hot.

Lil - Important week for Lil. DO NOT sing I Will Always Love You, I Have Nothing or You're Gonna Love Me. Remember last week when I said don't sing something, then you sang it? That was a bad decision. The best suggestion I've heard for Lil is Lauryn Hill's cover of Can't Take My Eyes of You from the 10 Things I Hate About You soundtrack. It's got soul, it's a great cover that feels young & modern and it requires serious pipes. Also, Nina Simone's take on Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood (Kill Bill) could be great, though, be warned now, this song has been done in so many styles, I will be suggesting it for many of the top 7. I'm not a fan of Dreamgirls and generally think we should all just forget it happened, but I suppose Listen would be a fine choice. Though completely and utterly boring. The problem with Lil is I don't really know what to suggest cause she's never picked the right song. She's gotta surprise us. What if she sang Suddenly Seymour? Haha I love that song. That would be so weird. Also pull-offable for Lil? Out Here On My Own from Fame. Yeah. I said it. I mean, she still shouldn't go the ballad direction yet again, but at least it's a better choice than a Whitney song. Probably stay away from Disney songs too...and Anastasia.

Danny - Oh, the Gokes. You're so Gokey. Danny could go many ways tonight. He's the only one I could see taking the Disney route (Go the Distance from Hercules, You'll be in my Heart from Tarzan) cause you either gotta be super Gokey or super mix-it-up-hip to pull off a Disney song. (Woah. Side note. Roger Bart was the voice of Hercules? That creeps me out. Roger Bart creeps me out, that's just the way it is. Moving on.) He almost seems destined to sing Iris (Goo Goo Dolls, City of Angels soundtrack) or Don't Wanna Miss a Thing (Like you don't know who that's by and what it's from) and he would sound great singing them, but...you know he won't do anything creative with them so...who really cares? If he wanted to get a little more unpredictable, might I suggest a Joe Cocker/Across the Universe mash up version of With a Little Help from my Friends or sticking with Joe Cocker, his cover of Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood? Could also see The Gokes doing some Peter Gabriel (In Your Eyes - Say Anything or Solsberry Hill - In Good Company) but I would rather he didn't. And fine yes, he could sing either Bryan Adams song, but Danny Gokey singing something remotely sexy makes me wanna throw up. So I'm not officially suggesting either one for him. He's so gonna sing Everything I Do, isn't he?

Kris - Kris, however, can get as sexy as he wants. I'll eat it up. And so will every other girl ever. Definitely recommend The Beatles' Something from Across the Universe. Thinking about Kris singing that makes me swoon. He could also pull off any Bob Dylan song, most of which were used in I'm Not There and thus are fair game. Ballad of a Thin Man, Simple Twist of Fate, Times They Are A-Changin, I Shall Be Released, Knockin of Heaven's Door are all Dylan songs Kris would kill. Just to name a few. I could also see Kris doing Have You Really Ever Loved a Woman (Bryan Adams - Don Juan DeMarco) and me doing that swooning thing again...Kris could also pull off pretty much anything from Once, especially Lies, and maybe even Is It Okay If I Call You Mine from Fame, with just him and a guitar, but the song doesn't have too many levels and there's no way he would randomly know that song. But the swooning, oh man. Another not a lot of range, just him and the guitar super swoony original choice? Wanna Grow Old With You from The Wedding Singer.

Anoop - I'm afraid if Lil does well this week, Anoop's outta there. Not even sure how he can save himself. He looks ridiculous whenever he does an upbeat song, but he can't just be the ballad guy. The ballad guy isn't gonna win American Idol. What could he even do? Unchained Melody? Sure. I've heard Let's Stay Together by Al Green from Pulp Fiction recommended, and also The Rainbow Connection, but Anoop's gotta get creative if he wants a shot at sticking around. I don't know, Anoop. I just don't know.

Matt - What do we know about Matt? He needs to sing something with soul. MTV suggested Janet Jackson's Again from Poetic Justice or The Beautiful Ones from Purple Rain. I know neither of these songs. I might suggest Try a Little Tenderness by Otis Redding, from both Pretty in Pink & The Commitments and for that matter - pretty much anything in The Commitments would work for Matt. Also, this may be cheating, but anything from the Ray soundtrack. Matt's wowed us before with Georgia on my Mind. He could do it with plenty other Ray Charles songs too. Oh god, is it wrong that I'd love to hear Matt do Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat, even though it's completely inappropriate for American Idol? Awkward or amazing if he sings Everybody Wants to Be a Cat from the Arisocats or Why Should I Worry from Oliver & Company? Why am I suddenly associating Matt with Disney cats? He could also do Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, because, hey, why not? Could also see Matt being the one to grab Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman? with that sultry voice...yes, I like. Or Unchained Melody from Ghost. Fine. See full post

To Make You Smile [Video of the Moment]

I'm posting this clip that originally aired a month ago because

a. I listened to this song every time I got into the car in Vegas
b. I love Chuck
c. This scene revived my love for this song
d. For some reason, this clip makes me really happy and full of emotion. Possibly because I'm weird, possibly because it's just that good.

Enjoy.

Oh, P.S. this is from the middle of season two and while nothing too important is given away or anything, I should say - mild spoiler alert

Update: HAD TO ADD THIS. Thanks to @genjadeshade and @melloniel for bringing it to my attention!

If The Mario Brothers Were Real [Shirt of the Day]

We don't have Shirts of the Day generally, but maybe we should. Cause I loves me some geeky shirts. Here's today's installment in our non existent shirt feature!

Realistic, disturbing and a whole lot of awesome. You don't want to look at this shirt if you are on hallucinogens. That's just asking for trouble. You also wouldn't want to look at this. Which, by the way, will never not be creepy. If someone was wearing THAT on a shirt, I'd be upset.

Dollhouse Canceled?

I hope this is some sort of misunderstanding, cause I'm PISSED.

Felicia Day
posted this on Twitter today

Man, day getting worse and worse. Found out my Dollhouse ep, #13 isn't gonna air. Only on DVD. Such a great part too. Thx Fox. :(

Io9, Crave Online & ThinkHero had run the story by the time I started finding all of this out and I yelled at my computer. I refused to believe it, so asked a source who has been working with Joss on Cabin in the Woods, to get an opinion. Word was Joss called it a week ago. Which makes me feel even more like Fox really did pull the plug. Apparently ep 12 will be the final one aired.

You know, Fox, you are doing yourself no favors. It's just despicable. I mean, I at least thought, based on what Joss has said at various conventions, the network was going to air all the episodes they've shot already. AT LEAST. I've been getting so into this show, more and more with every episode. I've had people tell me they weren't watching because "Why bother? It's a Joss show on Fox, it won't last" and I've said "Pshh, no, they will have faith this time." Because why wouldn't they? Why is it so difficult to just have faith in a show and let it stay on the air?! Other networks have done it! And it's JOSS. COME ON. UGH. Alas. Now we won't get to meet Alpha, we won't get anything resolved, and I'm still yelling at my computer.

Glad I have tickets to the Dollhouse event at the Paley Center. Gonna be a night to remember. I hate you, Fox. We are not friends.

(But also, I'm not believing it til I see a press release.)

Update: Now AV Club is reporting it

Update: Head here to contact people from Fox (Hat Tip: Whedonesque)

Update:
Update: In case you don't scroll down to the comments, we just got a great one from someone who actually knows what's going on!!!!

It IS a misunderstanding, but not in the way that you'd want it to be.

Felicia is right, they're not going to air #13. But guess what -- they never were. Because they only paid for 12 plus pilot (remember, the original scrapped pilot that didn't air?). The studio (NOT THE NETWORK), in what is actually a great business move, ordered an extra episode that they knew from the get-go would never air. Hello getting the DVDs to fly off the shelves.

I have VERY intimate firsthand knowledge of what went down with this show (I was Kevin Reilly's assistant), so I know what I'm talking about.

I'm a huge Whedon fan (I've been to the Once More singalong with Loquacious Muse herself, even), but the network isn't to blame this go-round. Sure, there were some HUGE eff ups with Firefly -- but the people running Fox then are not the same people running it now. So I get it. People are still mad about that. But seriously? NOT the same situation.

And [SPOILER ALERT] we are going to meet Alpha. Episode 11, people.

Update: From Alan Sepinwall, confirming the above comment

Update: Devin Faraci from Chud isn't buying it

Update: Quote from Tim Minear, courtesy of Whedonesque
Okay. So maybe I can help clarify this somewhat. Because we scrapped the original pilot -- and in fact cannibalized some of its parts for other eps -- we really ended up with 12 episodes. But the studio makes DVD and other deals based on the original 13 number. So we created a standalone kind of coda episode. Which is the mythical new episode 13. The network had already paid for 13 episodes, and this included the one they agreed to let us scrap for parts. It does not include the one we made to bring the number back up to 13 for the studio side and its obligations. We always knew it would be for the DVD for sure, but we also think Fox should air it because it’s awesome.

American Idol Predictions - 4/8/09

That's an awkward photo, isn't it? Oh well. I'm leaving it there.

Some quick thoughts on last night.

Adam rocked my face off singing Mad World. OF COURSE he wouldn't pick a top 100 song from that year. That kid probably loves him some Donnie Darko, yes? So glad he didn't go the obvious route, even though vocally he would have been amazing doing any of the more conventional '82 options. Anoop sounded good, but eh, bored me. Kris wasn't awesome, but IS awesome in general, and deserves to stick around. Danny has officially invented a new word with his crap. The word is his last name, Gokey, and it means a cross between hokey & garish, and it's what he does every week. Yuck. And why all that praise from the judges? Allison sang the song I was hoping she'd sing and rocked it. Matt is adorable and even though I'm not big on Stevie Wonder, he did a great job. Scott, you're sweet, but time to go home. Lil, WHY DID YOU SING THAT?! NOT SMART. She's going home soon.

My bottom three: Scott, Lil, Danny

My prediction for the bottom three: Scott, Anoop, Kris

Dial Idol's bottom three: Kris, Anoop, Scott

EW's bottom three: Scott, Lil, Kris

Scott should be going home tonight. It's about that time. Sorry, Vote for the Worst.

P.S. Happy Passover! My Jew self is gonna go have a sedar now See full post

The Observer from Fringe Attends American Idol [WTF]

In a brilliantly bizarre move of cross promotion, the Observer from Fringe showed up tonight in the audience of American Idol.

I mean, that IS Michael Cerveris. Maybe he wanted to go to American Idol is all. Maybe he knows Adam Lambert. I dunno, they're both in musical theater, they could know each other? He just happened to come dressed up like his character on Fringe...

Thanks to @Twicka for the tip See full post

Idols Take On Their Birth Years

Tonight, we will bear witness to Season 8's installment of the Year The Idols Were Born theme. We all know how much I love speculating what songs they will song (I don't know why, it's awkward, I just do) so I did some research and have come up with what I think would be some cool options for the Top 8 tonight.

1980 - Danny - The moment I looked at the top 100 songs from 1980, I was immediately drawn to Let My Love Open The Door by Pete Townshend, recently covered by Sondre Lerche for the Dan in Real Life soundtrack. (P.S. Download that shit right now) I LOVE this song. Don't know if it fits with Danny Gokey in any conceivable way though. So let's think - what would work for Danny? Little Jeannie by Elton John? Babe by Styx? All Out of Love by Air Supply? What ARE these songs? 1980 sucks. Daydream Believer done in a cool way? Refugee? Eff this. Next.

1982 - Adam - Bwhahaha. Physical! Eye of the Tiger! I Love Rock and Roll! And that's just the top 3 songs of 1982. Adam's gonna have fun tonight. 1982 ain't so 1983 (I'm sorry, 1983 was an insanely good year as far as 80s music goes) but it's still pretty good. Abracadabra? TAINTED LOVE? This year was made for Adam. Actually, this year MADE Adam. TEEHEE. Sweet Dreams by Air Supply hehe do I like this song? Rosanna by Toto? Ooooh, he could sing Open Arms by Journey and bring the house down. DO IT, ADAM!!! DO IT!!! JOURNEYYYY!!! Too bad they sang Don't Stop Believing already. Oh I love Heat of the Moment by Asia. Thanks for introducing that song to me, Guitar Hero: Rock the 80s. Okay verdict: Open Arms, Under Pressure or Edge of Seventeen. Rock me, Adam. YOU ROCK ME WHEN I TELL YOU TO.

1984 - Lil - I KNOW YOU WILL DO IT ANYWAY, BUT DO NOT SING WHATS LOVE GOT TO WITH IT, TIME AFTER TIME OR TAKE A LOOK AT ME NOW. Love is a Battlefield is this year! Brooke White kicked that songs ass, I loved her version. The Longest Time! I love that song. Lil plus Billy Joel = weird. Okay, I don't know. EW suggests Borderline or They Don't Know.

1985 - Scott, Kris & Matt - Luckily, there are TONS of options in 1985. Careless Whisper, if something new is done with it, could work well for Kris. I love Take On Me, which could also be really cool if done properly (I love A.C. Newman's cover) but NOT by Matt. Don't You Forget About Me also could be awesome! Lots of opportunities to strip something down, change it up, and make it awesome and modern. SOMEONE SING HEAVEN BY BRYAN ADAMS. SOMEONE WHO IS NOT SCOTT. I love that song...Really, Matt just needs to not do what he did last week. And Kris needs to continue to be adorable. Siiigh. Ooh, REO Speedwagon too?! 1985 is pretty cool.

1986 - Anoop - Lots of potential disaster for Anoop here...ohmygod, the top 100 songs in my birth year SUCK. Too bad Blake Lewis already did a You Give Love a Bad Name for the Idol ages. Good luck, Anoop

1992 - Allison - 1992 FTW! She could rock some Under the Bridge, especially if she plays guitar too. Could also see her busting out November Rain. Smells Like Teen Spirit is '92, but that's not a singy song. Bohemian Rhapsody's here too?! Damn! Is it wrong that I really wanna her sing I Can't Make You Love Me?? I know it's not rocky, but daaaamn would she sing the shit out of that. I have a feeling she is gonna go for the Chili Peppers. Hah...she could do Ace of Base.

Click here for EW's recommendations, some of which rock and some of which make no sense, and be SURE to watch the Idolotry video where they point out what a douche bag Danny is. I do NOT agree with Dave Karger that Danny is not a douche.

Tonight should be great for Adam, Kris & Allison, as always. Matt, PLEASE do well. Lil needs to not screw up again and pick a song that is just too big for her and big something that she can play around with and make her own. Scott & Anoop could do fine, but it's only a matter of time before they go home. Gokey is still pissing me off, but if he does something cool with Let My Love Open the Door, I might like him more. Lego Rock Band? What's Happening?

Was flipping through my google reader and came across this from G4's The Feed,

According to Harmonix senior designer Dan Teasdale,

Think [Services} posted the wrong slides from his Game Developers Conferance presentation "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap: Design Lessons Learned From Rock Band" online. Think apparently posted an early draft of the presentation as opposed to the actual slides he showed at GDC. The online draft mentions Lego Rock Band. Judging from the slide, it's coming in 2009, between Rock Band Unplugged for the PSP and The Beatles: Rock Band.

I don't think I'm alone in thinking this is probably not true. The Feed mentions that Lego could be a nickname, code name, joke, etc and I agree. What would be the point of Lego Rock Band? It doesn't even make sense. Like, in any universe. Unless it's like...Legos and kids songs...so you are all Legos playing...kids songs? That's all I got.

So what the hell would a reason be for having Lego Rock Band? Can you think of one? And call me crazy, but there's no GH4 up there, right? So GH: World Tour is considered GH4? So why GH5 and not GH: WT2? Wait, whats GH: Modern and GH: Decades? and GH: VH? Van Halen? What's GH: GH?! And GH: BH? I'm so confused right now. Wait "!!!" ? Does that mean Rock Band for the band !!! ? Otherwise known as ChickChickChick? That would be awkward.

Well. In any event. Beatles Rock Band is gonna kick my ass and make me the happiest person alive. And Lego Rock Band is hopefully a joke. Time to research what all these random editions of Guitar Hero are.

Update: Okay, thanks to some research, I've concluded that BH is Band Hero...but I don't know how that's different from Rock Band and GH:GH Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits. Also...odd. Why would I buy that?

Update: It's confirmed! Leo Rock Band exists and is coming out this fall. Interesting. Here's the info from Kotaku
LEGO Rock Band is being developed by TT Games in a partnership with Harmonix and published by Warner Bros. Entertainment. The game is built (geddit?) around the theme: "Build a Band and Rock the Universe." The teen and tween geared game boasts some of these tunes: Blur's "Song 2", Carl Douglas' "Kung Fu Fighting", Europe's "The Final Countdown", Good Charlotte's "Boys and Girls" and Pink's "So What".

"We're thrilled to offer another LEGO branded gaming experience that will deliver humorous and social play for families and friends," said Henrik Taudorf Lorensen, Vice President, the LEGO Group. "LEGO Rock Band is built around the same values of imagination and family-friendly creative role play that is present in other LEGO videogames. It will deliver innovative new elements of game play that complement the fun of the Rock Band experience."

How & Why To See Alien Trespass This Weekend [Round Up]

If you've been following All Things Fangirl for a while, then you know we are big fans of the film Alien Trespass. I've seen the film three times now and we've had the pleasure of interviewing and interacting with various cast members as well as R.W. Goodwin during Trespass' publicity tour. I think I just made up a phrase. Publicity tour? That's not a thing. Is it? Anyway.

We all really want this film to succeed both because of how original and lovely the film is and because the people behind the camera, especially Goodwin, are so creative & sweet, they deserve only the best.

You can find our review of Alien Trespass here, and our other AT coverage here.

Below is a video We Are Movie Geeks posted from NY Comic Con that I definitely recommend checking out and if you head over to Io9, you can watch a exclusive clip from the film, featuring Dan Lauria. Here, you can find an interview with R.W. Goodwin from AMC.

Here's a piece the NY Times did on the film this past weekend, (click to enlarge), which you can read in non-scanned form here.

Top Directors! [Results]

A couple days ago my question of the day on Twitter "Who are your top five directors?" and I got some very interesting responses. I probably should have clarified the question - dead or alive, working or not working, objective best directors or personal favorites, etc. I think ultimately people decided I had asked "Who are you five personal favorite working directors?" with some exceptions. Here are the results!

Not a single mention of love (alive, dead, working, not working) for:

Jim Cameron, Chris Columbus, Mel Brooks, James L. Brooks, Wes Craven, Richard Kelly, Paul Greengrass, Robert Zemeckis, Baz Luhrmann, Richard Donner, Tony Scott, Richard Linklater, David Cronenberg, Akira Kurosawa, Farrelly bros, Francis Ford Coppola, Barry Sonnenfeld, Chris Weitz, The Wachowskis, Catherine Hardwicke, Nora Ephron, Amy Heckerling, Greg Mottola, John Carpenter, Terrence Malick, Hayao Miyazaki, Alexander Payne, Brett Ratner, Ang Lee, David O Russell, Gus Van Sant, Wolfgang Peterson, Orson Welles, Howard Hawks

And a bunch of others too, obviously, but these are the most well known snubs. No Coppola?! I mean, I didn't put Coppola in my personal top five, but...but...it's Coppola!

Directors who got one sole vote:

Woody Allen, Fassbinder, Kubrick, Snyder, Bryan Singer, Frank Miller, Ron Howard
Iñárritu, Capra, Kazan, Wyler, Lean, Michael Bay, Hitchcock, D. Gordon Green, Stone, Apatow
Rob Zombie, George Lucas, Soderburgh, Lumet, Marc Forester, Peter Jackson, Dassin, Fosse,
Mike Nichols, Preminger, Mamet, Spike Jonze, David Fincher, Verbinski, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Abbas Kiarostami, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Herzog, Hughes brothers, Proyas, Jarmusch, Gondry, Lars Von Trier, Guy Maddin, Patrice Leconte, Li Yang, Cameron Crowe, Brad Bird, Kevin Smith, Satyajit Ray, Wong Kar Wai, Pedro Almodóvar, Yimou Zhang, David Lynch

Granted, I'm sure if I'd specified living or dead/old or new, Hitchcock, Kubrick, Lean, Capra, Wyler & Kazan would have gotten way more votes. Pleasantly surprised or mildly offended to see Howard & Snyder on this list? david is jumping up and down, I'm sure. I would have liked to have seen a little bit more love for Jonze, Fincher, Almodóvar, Lynch or Jackson, but alas. Hey, according to this poll, Kevin Smith > James Cameron. I like it.

Now to the good stuff! 5th - 1st place after the jump!

5th place: Tarantino, Rodriguez, Ford, Sofia Coppola, Park Chan Wook, Romero, Edgar Wright, Sam Raimi, Chris Nolan, Tim Burton, Aronofsky, Michael Mann, Ridley Scott, Altman, Ritchie

Hmmm, interesting list. Practically all genre directors save three for four. These all sound about right for 5th place - many of these directors have a very specific fan base & cult followers. Some have been nominated for awards, some haven't. I bet more on this list have been nominated for Saturns than Oscars. How bout them apples?

4th place: Guillermo del Toro, Danny Boyle, P.T. Anderson, Wes Anderson, Clint Eastwood

Huh. Interesting. Every one of these directors has been nominated for an Oscar. In the case of del Toro/Wes Anderson, they got nominated for screenplay. Which brings up the fact that most of these directors often act as much more. del Toro and both Andersons produce and write their own movies and while Eastwood doesn't write, he produces, directs, acts and for some odd reason, composes. Danny Boyle is the odd man out here, having only produced one of his own films and writing none.

3rd place: Spike Lee, Jean Pierre Jeunet, Billy Wilder

Hrm. Hah. Well. You got the modern American director, the modern foreign director and the classic American director. Also, I think the universe has made a collective decision to ignore Alien: Resurrection as a unit, because why taint Jeunet and Joss Whedon if we don't have to? Also here we have another case of triple threat filmmaking - writing, directing and producing. Only Wilder was nominated for Best Director at the Oscars (nominated A LOT. Won for The Apartment & The Lost Weekend) while Jeunet has one Oscar screenplay nom & one Saturn award nom (Damn...can't ignore Alien 4 after all) and Spike Lee has two Oscar nods, one for screenplay, one for Best Doc.

2nd place: Alfonso Cuarón, Steven Spielberg

YES. The sexy tie. Sexy because Oh how I love them! Both of these directors know how to do any genre that comes their way, which not all directors are capable of doing. Cuarón is personally responsible for four of my favorite movies of all time. (By the way, I have a lot of favorite movies of all time. david makes fun of all of them.) But A Little Princess makes me cry every time I see it (Just watch it. You won't know what to do with yourself), Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban I've seen more than any other Harry movie (EruditeChick will not be happy about that statement), Y Tu Mama Tambien is just brilliant & amazing and if you disagree with me, you are strange, and Children of Men devastated my heart and deserved way more attention. Spielberg is Spielberg and has also been responsible for tons of my favorite movies. Where to begin? Indiana Jones: Raiders & Last Crusade, Hook, Jurassic Park, Catch Me If You Can - okay, so my favorite Spielberg films are probably very unique to me, but whatever, if you think you don't love Spielberg, you need to check yourself. Yes, I said that.

1st place, with the most love from my Twitter followers:

Martin Scorsese, The Coen Brothers

Surprised? Pleased? Pissed? Scorsese and the Coens are very specific to me in that sometimes I love their movies and sometimes, I just don't, but I never hate the films and can always appreciate how well made they are. Love O Brother Where Art Thou & Miller's Crossing. Thought There Will Be Blood deserved the Oscar over No Country & Intolerable Cruelty was pretty intolerable (get it?!) Love classic Scorsese (esp. Taxi Driver) and The Departed. Gangs of New York & The Aviator? Eh. They were fine. But overall, Scorsese & The Coens are obviously already on the list of indisputable greatest directors of all time and will remain there.

So...The Theme Was Anything Popular?

Damn you Idol with your confusing everyone on the internets and making us speculate about a theme that wasn't even your theme. By the way, for the record, apparently it was "Top Downloads." Okay. Sure it was.

But even though the songs weren't the same, the advice I wrote up still applied, I think. Matt was too vanilla, he didn't soul anything up. It's kinda sad, cause he clearly doesn't wanna do soul all the time but...well...sorry Matt, you just don't sing rock well. It's weird, I know. Anoop didn't go tongue in cheek and it was awkward. Lil chose the wrong damn song AGAIN and Megan didn't pick Duffy/Adele/Winehouse, which means she is officially an idiot. Adam was awesome cause he is Adam and Kris went a completely different route, didn't do anything predictable or boring and was simply the Awesome. Scott didn't have to pick country cause he was allowed to pick a song he actually liked. Definitely his best performance but...still mediocre. Allison, sure the outfit was a bit much, but she didn't go the obvious route with song choice and she sounded AMAZING. HELLO JUDGES, ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION? Who did I forget? Danny? Oh yeah, he sang Rascal Flatts. SURPRISE. Shut up, Danny, I'm mad at you.

And now, from EW, who describes my take on the Allison business very well,

[On Allison] Oh, but yeah, if Kara, Randy, and Simon had focused on your No Doubt cover, they might've had to give you credit for breaking out your guitar and displaying a more vulnerable side to your vocals on the opening verse. Or how once again, you came pretty darn close to pitch perfection. Or that you picked a track that was actually written and recorded within the last two decades — and performed it with the kind of emotional gusto we've all come to expect, though hopefully not take for granted. For the record, I kind of dug Allison's hair tonight — it looked like the coolest possible mashup of Jem, Pebbles, and Missing Persons' Dale Bozzio — and while your dress was kind of shaped like a tent and looked like it had been stitched together using bespangled nightclub-admission bracelets, your intonation and delivery were (in the words of Paula) ''masterful and effortless.'' Too bad she said you were ''skating by'' to the finish line when I think she meant ''sailing through.'' Well, you can't win 'em all!

My personal bottom 3: Megan, Anoop Lil

Dial Idol's bottom 3: Megan, Allison, Anoop

EW Poll bottom 3: Megan, Scott, Matt

EW's Bottom 3: Megan, Matt, Lil

In conclusion, bye Megan! Let's hope Vote for the Worst doesn't pull through for you! See full post

Advice for the Idols: iTunes Week

So apparently tonight's Idol theme is something along the lines of iTunes downloads - either the top 100 or any song that's been in the top 100 since it started mattering in 2005. For today's Idol installment, we're gonna go with the assumption that's the theme is iTunes' current top 100. Sound good?

When was the last time you looked at the top 100? Cause...there is a lot of crap out there. A lot of really popular crap. Don't get me wrong, I LOVES me some good pop music for the working out and the dancing around like a moron in my apartment. I don't consider Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Rihanna or Britney Spears to be "crap". I do however, consider pretty much everything else on that list to be a total and utter embarrassment to us as a people.

That being said, I still thought it would be fun to think about what type of music on this list the idols should tackle tonight.

Kris - Maybe this is too obvious, but I think a little Jason Mraz, Matt Nathanson, The Fray, All American Rejects or Plain White Tees would work for him. Mraz's Im Yours (can someone sing that again?) stripped down, done acoustic style, or Lucky, somehow not as a duet, would best show off his voice and still have that cute, young, heartthrob vibe. Upon playing the 30 second preview of Here Comes Goodbye by Rascal Flatts, I've decided that too could work for him. But it's a little schmaltzy.

God there's a lot of bad music on this list...

Allison - The obvious choice here is any Pink song, as Allison sounds A LOT like her. But she might sound so much like her, that choosing her could be a bad choice. I'm not sure how the judges would react. She would obviously sing the shit out of it, but...just might be too on the nose. Not that I have ANY CLUE what else she could sing. Not Britney, not Rihanna, not Gaga, not Katy Perry, not Miley Cyrus, not Demi Levato, no rap, not Jai Ho, not Taylor Swift...what the hell is wrong the public that this is the top 100?! fdsgifsjdhg

Megan - Easy. Chasing Pavements by Adele. If Megan doesn't pick this song (assuming someone else doesn't pick it first) she is straight up an idiot and deserves to go home. This song could actually make Megan sound awesome and prove that she belongs in this competition.

Danny - Nothing on this list works for him. Cause he pissed me off last week and left my good graces. The only thing he could pull off would be one of those crappy country songs. Rascall Flatts, Keith Urban, etc whatever blah blah blah

Adam - Adam's one of the few who could really pull off anything on this list, because you KNOW he is gonna make it awesome. DEFINITELY the only one I could see doing a dance song, but I hope he doesn't. Ooh he could do something cool with that Muse song. Oh god what if he does Single Ladies and does the whole dance? What IF? Dude, I could so see him rocking Hot N Cold by Katy Perry. I love Adam. Please be awesome, Adam.

Anoop - This is Anoop's chance to bring back the magic of My Prerogative. He could pull of a Britney song, sing it amazingly well and have a little bit of that tongue in cheek humor. But he's gotta be careful. If Adam does a similar thing, Anoop's performance will fade to the back ground.

Matt - Matt has a VERY cool opportunity here to strip something down and piano it up. With JUST the piano. He could also sing the crap of something by Taylor Swift or Demi Levato or something totally random and weird that would sound amazing when he touches it. He does soul best, but I don't know if I see any on here. So he has to soulify something on his own. Unless he does the Matt Nathanson song. He could rock that, though it might be too...vanilla for what Matt needs right now. Hmmm...you know Don't Stop Believing is randomly on this list. What if Matt does it Tim Mahoney style? P.S. if you don't know what I'm talking about, go on iTunes and search for the Tim Mahoney cover of Don't Stop Believing.

Lil - This is a HUGE week for Lil. She needs to prove she can take the judge's advice or she's gonna be going home very soon. But I also have NO idea what she could sing with this theme. The guys at Idolatry were saying she should try going the Duffy/Amy Winehouse/Adele route in the coming weeks, but Chasing Pavements is literally the only song Megan could pull off and Winehouse & Duffy aren't on the current list. She could sing Beyonce's Halo, but that could be too obvious? And the song kinda sucks, so I don't know if it would do Lil any favors. Man. No clue.

Scott - He will some country song and go home. The end.

Final verdict:

Who will be awesome: Adam.

Who will either be awesome or called "obvious/boring" cause the Top 100 contains their niches: Kris (Jason Mraz) Matt (Matt Nathanson...sort of), Allison (Pink)

Who MUST pick the right song or it's curtains very soon: Lil, Megan

Who will sing something stupid very well and make me angry cause he ignored Smokey Robinson's advice and proved his ego is too big: Danny

Who will sing something stupid not so well and even though he is a better person than Danny Gokey, will probably go home: Scott

Absolute total wild card, will suck or be way awesome: Anoop

That about does it, folks! The show is an hour and a half tonight instead of two hours, which is sad times, but there's no mentor and only 9 contestants and the Osbournes need to do something blasphemous at 9:30. So I guess that's just the way it goes. See full post
