Great news, Fangirls!

Our own amazing, lovely, smart & hilarious Eruditechick will now be pulling double duty as a news writer over at Screenrant!!!

Last night (3/11/10) at 6:30pm in the North Gall of the Moscone Convention Center, Gamers gathered for the 10th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards. These are my favorite game awards because the winners (in theory) have nothing to do with marketing, connections, dollar signs or the like. These winners are chosen by fellow artist, designers, tech geeks, and game innovators. This is an opportunity for folks working shoulder to shoulder in the game industry trenches to acknowledge the accomplishments of their fellow colleagues. Check out this years winners:

American Idol Top 16 - Boys Night

Dear god. What was that. Why why why. I am LONGING for Adam Lambert, Kris Allen, Matt Giraud, and yes, even Danny Gokey so at least I have someone to hate. How BORING was that whole evening? Granted, we haven't even made it into the top 12 yet, so I should probably calm down. But AUGH. Just....WHY.

Lee Dwyze - Fireflies
This song is so emo. Lee is so...Lee. This is blech.

Alex Lambert - Trouble
He is definitely winning me over. I love the tone of his voice and the genre of his song choices. Hope he makes it through, he's the most improved week to week and deserves a spot in the top 12!

Yes, It was Tim's best performance, but his best performance was still a piece of shit. I suppose logic dictates that he should stay in over someone who hasn't improved at all, but I disagree, because Tim sucks, go home.

Andrew Garcia - Genie in a Bottle 
Creeped out by a guy singing Genie in a Bottle. "You gotta rub me the right way." Nonono. Stop. Its neat, but...awkward. Awesome in theory, not so awesome in practice. I did like the ending, but man. Forced. Uncomfortable. The sad sad story of Peaked-Too-Early-Garcia. That would suck if he went home tomorrow.


Casey James - You’ll Think of Me
I think Casey is the dreamiest dreamy of the dreamy swooooon, but stupid song, boring. He'll make it through to next week and hopefully not be boring again.

Seemed almost too muted, like the commitment wasn't actually there. It seemed to me like he was sick or something, but I guess he wasn't. So, just, please figure it out for next week.


Michael Lynche: This Woman’s Work
Very pretty. I wasn't as blown away as the rest of the judges, but I guess after a night like we had tonight, Michael "I can actually sing and perform well" Lynche seemed like a god-send.

American Idol Top 16 - Girls Night

Well, that was a bizarre girl's night, wasn't it? Two of the people I always count on to be great were utterly mediocre (Katelyn, Lilly) and two of the girls who the judges swear are awesome, but haven't proved it yet, hit it out of the ballpark (Lacey, Didi). Another two of the girls were reliably awesome (Crystal, Siobhan) and two are CLEARLY going home. Yikes. Sorry girls (Paige, Katy)

Here's my quick two cents:

Katie Stevens - Breakaway
Karaoke. Go be on Glee where they can fix your imperfections in post and get off American Idol please.

Siobhan Magnus - House of the Rising Sun
That was awesome. Simon, you're either a god damn moron or you are trying to sway the calling audience in a particular direction for nefarious reasons. Clearly has the best voice on the whole show.

EW's take on Siobhan,

Actually, that would be one way to explain Simon's inexplicable disdain for Siobhan's ''House of the Rising Sun,'' which — no exaggeration — I'd rate as one of the best pure vocals I've ever heard in an Idol semifinal. I mean, let's get real for a second: Given the fact that Randy Jackson considered Big Mike's James Brown worthy of a standing O last week, how is it possible that all four judges didn't get off their duffs on the basis of Siobhan's achingly gorgeous a capella intro alone? Come to think of it, only Ellen DeGeneres seemed genuinely blown away by the way Siobhan powered through her notes with a melisma-free clarity that's all too rare among Idol's ''big'' vocalists. Me? I could listen to a whole concert's worth of Siobhan's achingly lovely lilt, the way it rises and falls as she loses herself in the lyric, the way her upper register seems to inherently convey an innate sense of angst and pain and loss. If Siobhan's emotional commitment and pitch perfection is ''a bit weird,'' as Simon described it, then I hope more season 9 contestants follow suit.

Lacey Brown - The Story
LOVE this song. Was hoping someone sing it on the show. Unfortunately, it was Lacey, who doesn't have the power to sing the actual impressive, difficult part of this song. Apparently none of the judges have ever heard this top 40 hit before because none of them call her out. Luckily for Lacey, however, her voice is perfectly suited for her take on the song, and she sounds fantastic.


Katelyn Epperly - I Feel The Earth Move Under My Feet
That was awkward. That was nothing short of awkward. Love this girl, but this performance is all kinds of wrong. Her voice is still great and she is still so pretty so I hope she doesn't go home. Yikes.

Didi Benami - Rhiannon
Thank goodness. Gorgeous. Didi finally gets it! Let's hope she stays this awesome as the competition goes on. Love love loving this.

Paige Miles - Smile
My goodness that was depressing, wasn't it? That made me really sad. Poor girl just missed the mark completely tonight and knows it. Wow. Oh, the humanity

Mamasox - Gimmie One Reason
Week one: Soundalike
Week two: I've never heard that CCR song before, but seemed like it was more of her own take on a classic?
Week three: Took what could have been a soundalike and made it totally her own and TOTALLY EFFING AWESOME
Say what you will about Mamasox, she's unbelievable. And so confident this week! Sadly, early front-runners rarely make it to the top. Will Mamasox defy the odds?


Lilly Scott - I Fall To Pieces
Normally I love her, but this performance was bridging on bad for me. Her unique voice, style and mandolin saved it from the depths of horribleness, but she could get real old real quick if she stays on the path of whatever it was that just happened.

- Dancing set to scores I DONT CARE WHAT YOU SAY...though true, I didn't get the robot dance during the Up score
- Explaining the difference between sound editing and mixing
- Unpredictable winners! Missed both screenplays and actress on one of my ballots. Missed both screenplays and picture on my other.
- Getting a bunch of people on stage either presenting or tributing, who KNOW HOW TO SPEAK IN PUBLIC.  This list includes not only our wonderful hosts, but Tim Robbins, Michelle Pfeiffer (eternal class), Tina Fey, Ben Stiller, Stanley Tucci, Julianne Moore, RDJ and Oprah. Amanda Seyfried, Kristin Stewart and the rest of you youngins - TAKE NOTE.

- The clips of Lauren Bacall being sassy, elegant & hilarious when she accepted her honorary Oscar (if only there could have been more!)

- Damn! Sharlto Copley cleans up well. Wish I had a way of screen capping him sitting in the audience.
- Long Best Picture clips. I LOVE clips from the Oscar nominated movies. Relax, people.
- John Hughes tribute. Loved seeing old clips and then the actors all growed up.
- Fashion-wise?

Things I didn't love

- Mariah Carey talking non stop about how ugly she looked in Precious. Really?! Have you nothing else to say?
- As @thedanifesto pointed out, they changed the phrase "And the Oscar goes to" back to "And the winner is." We strongly disapprove.
- Not getting to see elongated clips of the lead acting nominees! But I guess snippets worked okay enough since it meant getting the tributes
- No clips for Cinematography? Really? Would have liked some examples of sound editing/mixing from the nominated movies as well.
- That awkward Kanye moment. Looking for info on what the hell that was? Click here.
- Not letting the director of The Cove, Louie Psihoyos, say ANYTHING on stage. So unfair.
- Not gonna lie, kinda wish I could have seen Almost There & The Weary Kind performed on stage.
- Hurt Locker winning the sound awards over Avatar
- Hurt Locker winning Original Screenplay over Inglourious Basterds
- Unpredictable winners! Missed both screenplays and actress on one of my ballots. Missed both screenplays and picture on my other. (I lost the pool by 2....siiigh)
- And yet no upset by Inglourious Basterds for Best Picture
- Tom Hanks making the Best Picture announcement unnecessarily anticlimactic
- Where's Jack Nicholson?
- This commercial:



- Sean Penn. ... What just happened?
- Fashion wise? Pretty much everyone else. WAY too many sparkles, shimmers, construction and ruffles. Do not want.
- Kristin Stewart's scowl. Beautiful dress, gorgeous face, but girl needs to learn how to exist in the public eye. She constantly looks either terrified, tired or angry.
- On a similar topic - the presence of Kristin Stewart, Miley Cyrus & Taylor Lautner. Zefron can be there. But the rest of you? Shoo.
- Being reminded that Jamie Foxx is an Oscar winner
- Puff Daddy on the red carpet after the Oscars, going to the Vanity Fair party "I don't know what her name is, but the woman who directed Hurt Locker." Go home.

When Kids' Music Was Clever

Tim and the Space Cadets are a new pop-rock group that writes music for children, providing some tremendous relief from the horrible and extremely inappropriate 'tunes' of Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber. Formed and based in NYC, they of course have begun their world (of children's music) takeover by utilizing that greatest captivator of the imagination: The Superhero.

Interview With An Academy Member

Every year the LA Times & Entertainment Weekly talk to anonymous members of the Academy and even though they are not supposed to reveal their votes, we had the opportunity to talk to a long time Academy member this weekend to at least see what his or her thinking is at this point in the game, just before his or her ballot was sent in. This particular member's opinions seem to stray off the beaten path from what's been published so far, so I especially thought it was worth hearing.

What do you think of the 10 nominees versus 5 nominees?

Im a big supporter of expanding the best picture list to 10 in that it does now make it more likely that popular genre or comedy films might be acknowledged, even if they have little chance of winning. In recent years, some of the movies I personally considered to be the best of the year were almost totally ignored by the academy and this change will help widen our scopes. If you look back at the history of the Academy and the years when there used to be 10 nominees, its very hard to argue that any of them don't deserve to be there. I think the same will ultimately hold true now. The proof is in the pudding in that this year's nominees actually do reflect a much wider range and include some films which would not have had a chance last year.


Which movies do you think may have benefited from ten nominees earlier on?

Last year, Dark Knight, no doubt, which everyone thinks was number 6. And in prior years, Children of Men, Charlie Wilson's War, Eternal Sunshine and so on. Though it never stood a chance, I actually nominated Shaun of the Dead for the 77th Annual Academy Awards and I don't think anyone can make a valid argument that Best Picture winner Million Dollar Baby is a better movie or had more of an impact on cinema today than Shaun of the Dead did.

How did you rank the top five of the ten nominees when you sent in your ballot?

American Idol Top 20

This week we saw some contestants take 3 steps forward (Big Mike, Mullet Kid, Bowersox), some take 2 steps back (Casey James apparently, Andrew Garcia) and some possibly ruin their chances all together (John Park, Todrick Hall, Didi Benami). Just another week in the life of American Idol! Here's the rundown.

Big Mike - It's a Mans Mans Mans World
Huge improvement, LOVED this performance. His voice sounds right in this style, much more so than last week's mediocre Maroon 5 cover. Also - what a personality on this guy, right? So entertaining & charming, I'm a fan.

John Park - Gravity
I think the problem with John Park is simply that his voice just isn't that great. It's good enough to be the lead singer of his a capella group, sure, and he's cute enough that you forgive the imperfections even more so, but American Idol isn't the place for him. Sorry, man. This may be the end of the road for you.

Casey James - I Don't Wanna Be
My least favorite of Gavin Degraw's ouvre, yet AI contestants refuse to stop singing it. Siiigh. Casey's voice came across a little too goat-Creed-y for me this week, but his badass guitar playing kind of made up for it. I don't see Idol as a singing competition so much anymore as I see it as a performing competition. Having a great voice just won't do it (see: Ashley Rodriguez), so Kara, you may wanna calm down a little there with your overcompensation. Though I do agree that Casey can do better and he will. And the performance was a tad cocky, so taking him down a notch will probably only help at this point.

Alex Lambert - Everybody Knows
Excuuuuse me?! This is why sometimes getting a second chance is necessary. Because hey, this kid can sing! I like his tone, I like his weird-ass style, I approve. And with this performance, the kid I was sure was gonna get kicked off this week secures himself a place in the top 16!

Muse's Lost Theory of the Week!

So I haven't made a habit out of recapping Lost but I did a little something something with The Lighthouse last week and feel compelled to at least share my probably-wrong-but-kinda-cool theory that developed after this week's ep, Sundown.

This week we saw many references to the fact that Smokey & Jacob frequently offer people the promise of loved ones coming back to life, reunions, the lives they always wanted but never had. And notice how these lives seem to be playing out, for the most part, in Sideways world. Jack has dealt with his Daddy issues, Nadia isn't dead, Hurley is the luckiest man in the world, Locke's relationship with his father is just fine and he's with his "soulmate", Helen, and Dogen's son is kicking ass on the piano instead of being dead due to his own father's negligence. Could it be that Smokey & Jacob have access to this Sideways World, and have the power to transfer the Lostie's consciousnesses into their Sideways bodies?

I got really emotional last night thinking of the moment everyone get transferred and Sawyer is sitting with Juliet over coffee, Claire is holding Aaron, with Kate beside her and so on and so forth.

Probably wrong? Yeah, probably, but theories are half the fun!

Yet I'm thinking Dogen was getting it wrong, too, either because he's misinformed or biased because of what Jacob did for his son: spared him from death. In fact, think about the wondrous things associated with Jacob. Richard's eternal youth. The resurrection hot spring. And, if you believe Ben from season 3, a cure for cancer. Jacob isn't ''good,'' per se — he's just capable of giving life. Put another way: Jacob is the god of beginnings. He is The Alpha. The Man in Black? Not evil — he's the god of endings. He is the Omega. The beginning and the end. Polar, warring opposites, but absolutely necessary for life to bloom (Alpha) and to have form (Omega). Both are necessary for anything to have meaning. Jacob unchecked leads to chaos; Man In Black unchecked leads to annihilation. Both need to exist in balance; both need to be equally weighted rocks on the scale.

RIP "Toga" [Video of the Moment]

This week, Papadurbin over at Never Seen Lost, decided to make a memorial video in honor of "Toga" aka Dogen. It seems that 6 episodes in to this season, no one's bothered to correct Papadurbin on Dogen's name, but you know what, I think that's A okay. It makes this tribute video even better than it already is.

I officially love Dean Fraser and his Springfield Punx. Bascially, he turns all of his favorite pop culture characters into Simpsonized versions of themselves, then posts them on the Internets. Best idea ever? Maybe. Just maybe.

He jumped on my radar this week when some very cool person named Adam Reynolds put a bunch of Fraser's Lost Punx together to create a desktop wallpaper.
