"What Am I?" [BSGasm]

Holy Crap.

Battlestar Season 4.5 Premiere

Lots of discussion over here.

THOUGHTS & THEORIES - GO. I'm looking at you, Stealth Bear & Garrett.

Some thoughts full of spoilers after the jump

I loved this episode, thought it was a great way to kick off the final 10 episodes. A whole bunch of creepy and/or disturbing reveals, plus that shocker of all shockers in the form of Dee shooting herself in the head. I've never liked Dee, but that moment made everyone in the room gasp and tear up. Very representative of how the whole crew is feeling right now.

My other favorite moments of this episode were:

-Starbuck discovering her own dead body. WHAT the frak?! And then Leoben getting so freaked out that suddenly all his "Kara Thrace and her special destiny" crap goes flying out the window. He's said for so long that she is special. Here, clearly, proof that she is REALLY FRAKING SPECIAL and he runs away. Not that I don't understand. Cause I do. That's not Starbuck. Which is terrifying. So what is she and how did this happen? I can't wait for the answers.

-Final Five (Four) flashbacks. Tyrol wore glasses, Anders was a rock star, Tory was a fan of said rock star. There was quite the debate over here regarding what Tory's line about Anders singing for all of them meant. All of them as in, everyone, at a very public concert? Or all of them as in every girl he wanted to sleep with? And say what you want - you would have been disappointed with the final cylon no matter who it was. Getting it out in the first episode was a brilliant move. Remember back in season 1 when Baltar tested Ellen? And refused to reveal the results? And how everyone accused her of being a Cylon? Interesting. And was she somehow responsible for the attack on Earth? How did she know they would be reborn and did she somehow plan the fate of the other three as well? And why those five? Were they prominent, important people?

-Finding out that Earth humans are actually Cylons. I remember bandying about this theory with friends years ago and am thrilled it's come true. Granted we have a lot left to learn, but I love the idea that the Final Five are actual Earthlings, reborn somehow. Did the 13th colony know they were different? Know they had robot in them? Is that why they went off and found their own planet far away from the other 12? Does it have anything to do with worshipping one god or being banished to their own planet for being evolved robots? Is it all happening again, but can be stopped and fixed once and for all with the cylon/human babies?

-Seeing Roslin finally lose all hope. She's been so strong, so sure, but this is the last straw. Heartbreaking.

I can't wait for the next nine weeks. I love this show.

I Found a More Wretched Hive of Scum and Villainy

This awesome concept art of Sith Obi-Wan Kenobi is courtesy of Free Radical, who were developing Star Wars Battlefront III until they closed down last month. While this is really bad news for Star Wars fans, we get all sorts of leaked development materials since the studio is no more. Apparently, the game was going to feature a storyline wherein Obi-Wan struggles with the dark side. Also, he finds lots of leather straps and makes himself look thoroughly badass. I highly, highly suggest you click on the image to see the full-res version. Also, click through the jump for another shot of Dark Kenobi with notes on the artist's inspiration and some leaked development footage from the game!

A Big Day for Sully [Fun with Coincidences!]

So tonight on 30 Rock, Liz Lemon talked some shit about having to hang out with a bunch of crew members all named Sully

In real life today, a pilot landed a plane safety in the Hudson River & will probably receive a special honor of some kind for being the first person in 45 years to land a plane in water with zero deaths. This pilot's name was Sully.

90210 Semi-Live Blogging Episode 13 [Loss of 12 Fangirl Points]

Oh hai! I i can has zero body fat?

This week's episode of 90210 continues the show's tradition of trying my patience. Joining me for tonight's semi-live blog are my roommates, Jen and lower case ATF contributor, david. Maybe I should feel guilty for forcing them to watch such drivel but...nah, I don't.

So it begins....

__________________

Eyu eyu eyu they are all eyu

Annie & Blando talk about the weather. Literally. Shenae Grimes and Dustin Mulligan are such bad actors that it makes my soul hurt. Also. Good night? Isn't it daytime? Did I just miss something? They did say good night, right? And it is light outside, yeah? Hrm.

YOU DON'T SAY I LOVE YOU FOR THE FIRST TIME OVER THE PHONE STOP

Oh my god I hate Shenae

david doesn't understand why Lucille Bluth is anywhere near this disaster

Annie hunches when she kisses. Blech.

david is offended that there is a cover of a Robyn song playing and thinks Jessica Stroup is cute

Ethan & Annie. Worst. TV. Couple. Ever. Enter Dixon & Silver. Make that the two worst tv couples ever. Borringggg.

Silver is PISSED at Dixon for ... Annie and Dixon being all lovey dovey? I don't get it.

Naomi needs to shut the hell up

Field Hockey? Really? I went to high school in LA...we didn't play field hockey...just putting that out there

david asks who "that awful awful woman is". He means Naomi. Obviously.

Naomi is gonna think Adrianna is using again and tell everyone and be lame. BAD friend alert.

Everyone's a bitch and david concludes that Naomi is the worst character yet

Naomi is an unprecedented level of awful

Stop kissing!!! It's actually offensive.

Joining the choir isn't a lame thing in affluent los angeles high schools, by the way. Like, not even remotely. Who is writing this show? Where did they go to high school? I demand answers!!!

Also, school has never been canceled for a heat wave in BEVERLY HILLS. The dead of the desert, sure. The valley even! Sure! But BEVERLY HILLS? In winter?! No. 12 years. I went to school in LA for 12 years. It IS often hot out there when freezing on the East Coast. But...they just take everything too far past reality. And not in that fun, smart way Gossip Girl does. Oh, how it all annoys me so.

Grandma gets Annie a car. ... ... Um. Why, exactly? Is it her birthday? Is there a reason? No? Oh okay, great, moving on.

Tranny Train Wreck is an idiot. Oh, p.s. Tranny Train Wreck is david's new nickname for Naomi.

SHENAEJUSTMAKESFACESANDSQUEAKS

I miss Arrested Development

OBVIOUSLY Shenae Grimes has her belly button pierced

If it's that hot in Los Angeles, Palm Springs is a TERRIBLE idea

Oh, and don't forget to drink Dr. Pepper, guys.

Ah - apparently Silver is pissed cause Dixon hasn't said I love you yet. Gag.

"You are my mother, she is my wife." Haha okay, that made me laugh

Wow. On a swing set, yet

david decides Naomi is a furiously demented version of Hermione

And also an idiot

"I think this guy named Hank who I know from rehab." Yup. She said that.

Palm Springs. Where we can be alone and die from heat exhaustion.

"Go to palm springs" = "have a lot of dirty sex." Kthx.

We all hate Naomi more than we can even comprehend

Was this shot in the Frank Lloyd Wright house I frequented as a rebellious teenager?

Please don't be so skinny, Silver.

Silver doesn't listen to me and proceeds to be way too skinny

Silver demonstrates how "hip" she is again (Remember last weeks Grindhouse bit?) by referencing Gaudi

Is that Twilight's Emmett?

"He's a total sponge." Totally. Good one, Naomi.

Isn't it weird that the grown-ups are the only source of humor that is intentional, not inadvertent?

Jessica Stroup just got REALLY lame in that ad for Confessions of a Shopaholic. Wow.

They are putting off the sexy times. This is boring.

"I'm ready." YOU ARE SO BAD, STOP IT. Also, the writing is terrible. So that doesn't help.

I wanna know what that Blended thought!

People don't talk like that before sex. She makes me angry. Lookit how tiny she is! Eyu! It's like he is making out with a little kid!

Don't do it don't do it don't do it

THEY'RE NOT DOING IT. YES! Her stupid talk gave him pause!

"Too late. You just did." BURN. Okay, that fight blew up rather quickly...None of that made any sense. We're all in agreement here, right?

Everyone thinks Adrianna is back on drugs. Hilarious! Navid must defend her honor. Fightfightfightfightfight! omg, FIGHTS IN ARABIAN CABANAS!

Adrianna's confession and Navid's reaction = the only moment of dramatic tension this show has ever had. Ever.

Annie & Ethan sleeping apart. It's not sweet. Cause they hate each other. That's why they are sleeping apart. It's actually kind of sad.

Anyway, way to be REALLY CREEPY, parents.

Pink pillars of light. Nope. Why.

Silver doesn't love Dixon! NICE. They totally faked us out! Okay, but then the fight escalates way too quickly. 90210 is like Revolutionary Road in that way. Also, SHE KNOCKED OVER HIS SAND CASTLE CAUSE SUDDENLY SHE'S FIVE.

They have SCHOOL today?! And they're in PALM SPRINGS? WHY would someone EVER drive to PALM SPRINGS on a SCHOOL NIGHT. I I I I I can't.

Navid's a good actor. Aw I feel bad for everyone now. And by everyone, I mean Navid & Adrianna. I don't actually give a shit about anyone else.

Dixon engages in passive aggression. Always a good relationship move. I'll let them get away with it cause teenagers tend to suck at dating in that way. This brings 90210's total to two points. (As you may remember, they got one last week for that "Ms Taylor" business.)

Lucille gets the part! Huzzah!

Naomi's hair is always stupid. Even when it's normal. Still stupid.

Shenae Grimes & Dustin Mulligan make me see the worst in people

I just don't think Dustin Mulligan has it in him, I'm gonna say it. I just don't think he has it.

They look like kissing hunchbacks

That episode was stupid. Bedtime!

Map of the Star Wars Galaxy! [For mah wallz pleaz?]

This is too cool not to share.

It's a map of the Star Wars Galaxy! So many planets!! I love how Endor, Hoth & Dagobah are all epically far away from Coruscant & Alderaan. That's what my head thought it would be! Tatooine is also in wild space. So like, the planets with specific themes (forest, snow, swamp, desert) are all wild spacey and the planets that seem to have all types of conditions, must like Earth, are closer to the center of the galaxy. Mon Calamari may be the farthest away. As it should be. Fish people.

Head on over to Wookiepedia to learn about all the different planets. Already, I know that Varonat (near Hoth & Endor) is a steaming jungle planet and Nkllon is volcanic (as if you couldn't tell by looking it - so red!) and home to the Lava Worm. Ooh, Rishi the tropical planet! And Ryloth is rocky. I COULD DO THIS ALL DAY. And maybe I will. Let me know if you find what is in your opinion, the coolest planet on this map. I LOVE STAR WARS.

15 Minutes of Terminator with McG [Event]

Just got back from a Terminator event where McG showed us about fifteen minutes of footage, along with two rough trailers, and chatted a bit about anything we wanted to know.

Before the screening began, we got to take a look at some very cool production art. Among the pieces on display were a couple different destroyed landscapes (one of LA, one of New York and a few more), what looked like a Terminator assembly line, an explanation of how the "Hydrobot" works (more on that later) and the apparent evolution of T600 to T800, with a T700 and a "Marcus" model in between that seems to be the most human shaped of the four designs.

Inside the screening room, we were introduced to producer Dan Lin (who let us know that Sherlock Holmes is currently shooting in the Armory in Brooklyn. Let the RDJ sightings begin!) and the very enthusiastic & geekier than I ever suspected (that's a good thing), McG. Before I get into what was said & how the footage looked, let me say that McG is oddly self aware and self deprecating & has a childlike wonder when it comes to making movies. For some reason I thought he would be this slick, cocky guy, but in fact he's kind of a weird geek whose excitement over his films could I suppose be read by some as over confidence, but I just saw it as endearing.

Moving on.

McG explained how we are the first people to see any of tonight's footage and a lot of it is incomplete so we'll be seeing plenty of animatics. ILM is currently working on the FX and McG just came from the editing room. Here's the basic premise of the film for those of you who don't know,

Terminator Salvation is set in post-apocalyptic 2018, where John Connor is the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future that Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright, a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor & Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet's operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind.

So in this Terminator film, Judgement Day has already happened, it took place in 2003 like the first two Terminator films say. In fact, McG stressed that he loves and respects T1 and T2 and those films are where the core of Salvation's mythology comes from. There is obviously some T3 thrown in there (Kate Connor, for one), but the most mind was paid to the first two. Salvation should not be looked at as a T4, but rather a reboot honoring the same basic mythology. In the same way Batman Begins wasn't Batman 5, Salvation is not Terminator 4. What makes this film differ the most from any other incarnation of the Terminator franchise is that it takes place in the future, IN the full out war the Connors have been fighting to prevent. And if the first film was about protecting Sarah and the second about protecting John, this one is mostly about protecting Kyle. Here, we will see John Connor fulfill his destiny and the pieces get put into place for the 2029 event of sending Kyle back in time to impregnate protect Sarah Connor. This obviously requires Kyle being alive and well when the time comes.

When McG first heard that another Terminator movie was floating around out there, he wasn't interested. A big Cameron fan himself, he thought the story was tied up with the first two films. When he heard that this film would take place after Judgement Day, however, his interest was piqued. He didn't like the first script he read too much, didn't think it was there yet, but could see the potential. To him one of the most important aspects was respecting the fans and the original films, so before doing anything else, he reached out to Jim Cameron for his blessing. Cameron said he couldn't blindly get behind the film, but wished McG well, telling him he knows what McG must feel like taking this on, as he was in a similar situation years ago, taking over the Alien franchise from Ridley Scott.

More after the jump

In his search for the right actor, McG knew right away that he wanted Christian Bale. He considers Bale to be one of the most talented actors of his generation and I can't say I disagree. Bale didn't like thr script too much either though, and said he would only do the film if the script got to a point where they could do a reading, just sitting in a room, and the words alone would be enough to keep an audience interested. McG agreed and got Jonah Nolan to sign on and turn the script into what it eventually became. They were both passionate about Genesis stories (The examples he gave were school paper photographer Peter Parker becomes Spiderman, computer hacker Thomas Anderson becomes Neo, etc) and wanted to detail how Connor becomes leader of the resistance and how a kid becomes the Kyle Reece we know and want to have sex with. Okay that last part was me, not McG. Look, every girl, myself included, is in love with Michael Biehn circa 1984 (even though I was -2 years old then) and anyone who says otherwise is lying...back to the event. With this new script, Bale signed on. In looking for gritty realism, McG went to Stan Winston for the robot design, specifically that of the "easy to spot" T600 and with that, the main team that would accomplish the goals McG was aiming for, was compiled.

One of those goals, McG told us, was to create a big movie that is also one of the best movies. Not schlocky, not disposable. Summer fun yes, but also great, like The Dark Knight or The Matrix, a film which was a big influence on McG as it was both filled with amazing action and could also be the topic of a class at NYU. Which I think it actually was. McG drew a lot from Philip K. Dick, specifically
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and late 70s, early 80s science fiction film, especially the classic based on Androids, Blade Runner. The difference now is that this kind of technology is actually upon us and thus the themes are more relevant than ever. He plays a lot here with the theme of "That which makes us great could also be our undoing."

The first clip we see is a full on action sequence featuring a giant (and I mean GIANT) Terminator as well as a Terminator ship and Terminator motorcycles whose AI seems to specialize in identifying & avoiding collisions...which mostly succeeds. Before the robots enter the scene, we watch as Kyle and his protector, Marcus, along with a small child, are searching around a destroyed 7-11. They notice an almost empty milk bottle and determine someone else must be there. Before they can even get the thought out, they are surrounded by other humans trying to survive. And before these other humans can decide whether or not to help or kill Kyle and his team, out comes the Giant robot and pretty much everybody dies in a very cool, very fun sequence, where we see Kyle's leadership abilities beginning to form. Those who don't get smashed are taken captive. Skynet is collecting human subjects to help them figure out how to make what will eventually become the T800. There is also a different look to the whole scene, which McG then explains is due to the fact that they invented their own film stock for the movie. They processed old dead stock with three times the silver as normal in order to achieve this Childen of Men or Road Warrior type of dirty other-worldliness.

McG then talked a bit about how the film really focuses on Connor & Marcus - who or what Marcus is and how that affects Connor's journey. Credibility and realness was important to McG who insisted that the actors get to interact with actual robots instead of a tennis ball on a stick. This resulted in a couple injuries for Bale from punching the metal robots, but they'd have it no other way. The documentary Hearts of Darkness has been a huge inspiration to McG throughout the entire process and he hopes that the world of duress that they are creating in Salvation really explodes off of the screen to show in the end, what is best about humanity.

The 2nd clip we saw involved John Connor & Marcus making a "Faustian bargain" of sorts. First we see all of Connor's men get attacked by multiple Hydrobots, snake-like robots who live in water and are really effing creepy, who seem to latch on to everyone's face and force you to experience frightening Alien flashbacks. Connor isn't afraid and shoots them all up cause he is a badass. Then Marcus appears out of the water, destroying some hydobots barehanded, and his face seems to be peeling off a bit, revealing, you guessed it, metal. Remember when I mentioned the concept art that featured a robot named "Marcus"? Turns out Marcus woke up one day and noticed there was some machine stuff going on inside of him. We don't know what it means, and neither does Marcus. And McG won't tell us. Marcus tells Connor to trust him as he can help rescue Kyle. Connor struggles, but agrees. Christian Bale has his whole raspy, deep voice thing going on, which leaves me a tad skeptical, but he also acts the crap out of the scene, so I'll forgive his gravelly Clint Eastwood tone & trust that it won't bother me in the end.

Finally we see a rough trailer (I say rough because it's filled with animatics) that is pretty awesome and will definitely be a treat when it's completed. Maybe it will be premiered at New York Comic Con I hope I hope I should have asked? Some highlights are Connor talking about Skynet taking human prisoners for R&D, Kyle saying "Come with me if you want to live" for the first time and someone holding a picture of Sarah Connor. The tagline is "The End Begins."

McG then opened it up to Q&A and talked a little more. Here's the best stuff:

-McG was considering getting Gustavo Santaolalla and Thom Yorke together to work on the score, as he wanted both a human side & a more robotic, futuristic side, but after meeting with Danny Elfman, he had no doubt that Elfman could do both, while still incorporating and elevating the original theme and hired him.
-There is no sexism, racism or ageism in this future. When the world comes to an end, all of that goes out the window.
-McG is determined to be transparent in his process, respect the audience, answer any questions the fans have and deliver on their expectations
-Christian Bale's performance has shades of both Edward Furlong & Nick Stahl
-Salvation could be seen as a prequel or a sequel, depending on how you look at it
-We will see Connor deal with accusations of being crazy the same way his mother did
-They did not go for any particular rating in production and always put the movie first. McG is expecting to receive an R, but what the MPAA will think wasn't on their minds
-McG is a fan of strong, powerful women and we'll see plenty of them in Salvation.
-
In case we were wondering, he tells us that he grew up being called McG because every man in his family was named Joseph McGinty and as they were poor and all lived together, they needed to call the youngest Joe something different, thus the nickname McG was born.
-Kate Connor is 2nd in command in the resistance
-The part of the war the film focuses on is the "brink" Kyle talked to Sarah about in T1
-The idea of somehow using Michael Biehn or Schwarzenegger is always on McG's mind, but he can't talk about it...which may be an illuminating answer in and of itself
-Many parallels between this and T1 - many things that occur in this film influence Kyle's interaction with Sarah 11 years later
-First Terminator incarnation that doesn't deal with time travel
-Is hoping to continue the turn back to big but great movies like what Star Wars & Indiana Jones were when McG was growing up. He senses this kind of respect for the fantasy/sci fi/action genre coming back, especially with the success of Dark Knight, and he hopes to continue the trend and really challenge the audience
-Bale was anal about sticking to the mythology and being truthful to the canon they decided on. He would always speak up if something didn't ring true and apparently got really cockney whenever he was riled up about it
-Unlike T3, There is nothing tongue in cheek about this film. They took the source material very seriously
-McG laughs about how much Charlies Angels 2 sucked
-Isn't worried about competing with Transformers in 2009 as they are very different films & their designs are not the same

And that's about it! Overall I got the impression that McG cares deeply for the source material and about making a truly great movie. I'm most excited for the parallels and references to T1 & T2, especially the look on Connor's face whenever he meets Kyle and Kyle's reaction to seeing Sarah Connor's picture for the first time. The footage was cool enough, but I wanted more. Action sequences are great and all, but I wanted to see more of the human interaction. To his credit, McG wished he had more of that to show us as well. Again, I repeat - New York Comic Con? WonderCon? In any event, I'm still excited for this film as I love the Terminator franchise, and McG does seem very committed to honoring the original material, Cameron's vision and the fans.

Golden Globes Wrap Up

I'm not gonna lie - despite Slumdog sweeping everything and making me sad, this was one of my favorite Globes in years.

We had hilarious truly hilarious moments (Tracy Morgan, Tina Fey, Ricky Gervais), truly emotional moments (Chris Nolan accepting for Heath Ledger, Mickey Rourke) and plenty of genuine surprises with appropriately genuine reactions (Colin Farrell, Kate Winslet).
I loved seeing the difference in reaction between Winslet's first win (Ah, I was maybe expecting this, okay, cool, let's dance, this is awesome!) and her second (what the hell?! what the fuck?! what do you mean?! what's going on?! AHHHH) and watching Sally Hawkins flip her shit, having no idea what to do in a room full of that much talent (Note to Sally - you're that talented too! Don't worry!) Both of these women, by the way, received live advice from Emma Thompson. Is she like, the mother hen for all British actresses? She should be. I love her.

Lovely moments aside, I'm disappointed that Slumdog continues its overrated momentum. I liked the movie just fine. A lot even! But all the overpraise it's getting is making my resentment grow. Especially because for the first time in...forever? my favorite film of the year is maybe the most commercial Oscar bait there is (Benjamin Button) but now I feel like I shouldn't be rooting for it to win over the "little movie that could." It's very frustrating. To me, Slumdog was a lovely little fairy tale that was ultimately predictable & hollow. It didn't affect me on that personal level the way Benjamin Button did, or for that matter the way Dark Knight, The Wrestler, Let The Right One In & Happy Go Lucky did either. But momentum is a powerful thing. Then again...so is backlash...

So what does all of this mean for the Oscars? Slumdog is close to tying it up, but I'm still holding out hope that maybe one year my favorite movie of the year will actually win Best Picture. And maybe that year is now. Best Actor is swinging more in Rourke's direction, but expect everyone to be biting their nails on Oscar night in the hopes that Sean Penn doesn't steal it away from him. Don't get me wrong, Penn was amazing, but Rourke was my favorite and my pick to take the prize. Supporting Actor is in the bag and if any stupid backlash starts, then people are dumb and that's all there is to it. Actress & Supporting Actress are more up in the air than ever, since Ms. Winslet most certainly won't be taking home two Oscars in one night. So which prize will be she be winning? And who will take the other? I'd be thrilled with Hawkins taking home Actress if Winslet takes Supporting, so I'll stick with that for now.

By the way, Kate & Leo are blatantly in love and I feel bad for Sam Mendes, but am wholly fascinated by the whole damn thing. She said she was proud to get to say in front of all these people that she loves Leo and has loved him for 13 years...waaaay before she ever met her husband. HELLo. I wonder if my live blogging fan fiction came true. At the end of the day, Kate's probably too classy for those kind of shenanigans. But I wouldn't judge her if she wasn't.

What do you think the Globes mean for this year's Oscars? What was your favorite moment? How awkward was it when Kate Winslet forget Angelina? How much does Ari Folman look like the animated version of himself, like seriously, it's creepy.

Deal with it Cate Blanchett! See full post

Io9 Talks Geeky Actors

Io9 just wrote a terrific piece profiling actors who get Fandom, because they're geeks themselves or because without being a geek, they are still awesome and non-judgmental. I was thrilled to see this list because I've witnessed actors being in convention environments for my entire life. Literally. And can confirm first hand that Io9 is on the money here. All the actors they named absolutely love coming to Comic Con and know how to bring the house down on a panel, especially Nathan Fillion, who I had the pleasure of drunkenly professing this truth to at last years EW party. I believe the conversation went something like this:

LQM: Omg I'm so drunk and you are the best on panels ever and I've seen a lot of panels. I'm really drunk. You are even better than Hugh Jackman! DRRUUNKKK

NF: Thank you and here is a lovely story about Hugh Jackman! I met his brother once, and he told his son to "give him a kiss" him meaning me and it was weird and hilarious and they are Australian, but my Australian accent sounds French because I know that will make you laugh and I'm an entertainer and also the coolest person ever

NF's Friend: Nathan, someone needs you

NF: Must go, nice to meet you!

LQM: I'M SO DRUNK I LOVE YOU...(exclaimed in my thoughts)

I forget the point of this post

Ah yes, Io9 is magical and got it right. There are a few, however, that I'd like to add to the list - find out who they are after the jump!

Zachary Levi & Joshua Gomez

These guys from Chuck are 100% self-professed geeks. Levi has readily admitted to Wii injuries aplenty and at July's TCAs, he was showing off his iPhone lightsaber like it was his job and he just got a promotion with three times the bonuses and a corner office facing the empire state building. (What...?) The above clip features Gomez & Levi arguing over who would win in a fight, Godzilla or Voltron. They're fantastic on panels and in Q&As and took a walk around Comic Con's dealer's room when no one was looking. I'm hoping at this year's SDCC, someone asks these two what their favorite comic books are so we can see how truly deep the geekdom goes.

Seth Green

The original, the classic, the master of cool geeks - Seth Green. I remember first encountering Seth at Comic Con when I was 12 or 13. He was there ostensibly for the Buffy Season 3 panel, but he didn't simply come and go for it like most of the other actors did. He stuck around for the whole event and has continued to grace San Diego with his presence ever since. I seem to remember finding out at some point that he had been attending Comic Con well before he was a well known face, but the internets isn't helping me find anything to back that up. Also helping Seth's geek cred - he has made his mark in many different fannish fields, as actor, creator & talking head. He's always hilarious and always knows what he's talking about. The best part of Seth Green? As a fan, he knows what it's like for fans to meet the people they admire, so don't be afraid to go up and chat with him. He's extremely humble and knows that really, he's one of us.

Hugh Jackman

While not a big geek himself, Jackman couldn't judge a person if he tried. Eternally sweet and eager to please, Jackman's become a Comic Con staple, attending whenever he can. This year he surprised the fans with some Wolverine footage and took the time to acknowledge & shake the hand of Wolverine creator, Len Wein. He owns the stage and enjoys every second he's on it. He loves interacting with the fans and absolutely gets it. While many actors wouldn't see the importance of flying across the country to promote their film at a comic book convention, Jackman gets it - and when an actor gets it, fans take notice. Unfortunately if Fox keeps up this Watchmen nonsence, who knows how Wolverine will fare opening weekend.

Eva Mendes

I can hear you asking "hrmm?" and I understand. But while I am by no means an Eva Mendes fan and I haven't even seen most of the movies she's come to Comic Con for (Ghost Rider, The Spirit, among others), that girl LOVES her some geeks. Any excuse she can find to be on a panel, she'll be there. Maybe she just likes the unbridled attention, but we can't judge her for that. So many actresses have come to Comic Con and been wholly unimpressive due to the terror they feel at the thought of encountering fanboys - See Halle Berry, Jessica Alba, Kristin Stewart, almost every actor of the female persuasion. But Eva Mendes eats it up and the crowd loves her for it.

Rosario Dawson

The female counterpart to Seth Green in terms of cool geeks. She too attends Comic Con pretty much every year and dabbles in various geek facets, some of the most recent being creating her comic book, the Occult Crimes Taskforce and lending her voice to the new Wonder Woman cartoon. She is always eager to talk about her geekdom and has rightly earned her place in the geek chic pantheon. Though take note, I'm not a huge fan of hers, by any means, but I gotta respect the fellow fangirl.

Honorable Mentions: The casts of Firefly (all of em), Battlestar Galactica & Heroes (minus the girls, but especially Adrian Pasdar & Greg Grunberg)

Stupid Names XIII

First off, the NEWS. Square Enix finally launched the official site for Final Fantasy XIII. Check it out! There are the first available direct screenshots (as opposed to bootleg photos and magazine scans), some tasty music, and minimal info. For those of you who aren't aware, this FF will be published for the PS3 AND XBox 360... another huge blow to Sony, who could win The Biggest Loser for the rate at which they're losing PS3-exclusive titles to Microsoft.

Anyway, on to my concern: the names of the three title characters in the game are Lightning, Snow, and Vanille...

Now, I knew about Lightning already, but this is the first I'd heard of the others. I know that Square has a tradition of weird names that are essentially just pretty English words slapped together (Cloud Strife, Squall Leonhart, Rinoa Heartilly), but really Square? Lightning? Snow? I'm half-expecting the main baddie's name to be Tree! Square, you let me down. Yea, Final Fantasy games usually give you the option of changing the character names when you meet them, but nothing's worse than being confused in a conversation with friends about a Final Fantasy game because you renamed your characters Sally, Ned, and Leroy.

It's okay, Square. I still love you and everything you make. See full post

A Question [Quick Thought]

Dear Miramax,

Why did you send Happy Go Lucky (one of my favorite films of the year and pick to grab Best Actress) out to academy members to arrive today, the final day Oscar nomination ballots must be sent in?

Poor form.

Obama Meets Spiderman [WANT]

As a staunch comic book fan and even stauncher liberal, this excited me greatly

Please don't sell out please don't sell out PLEASE don't sell out before I get to Midtown Comics on Wednesday!! I don't care if it's some stupid marketing move, I waaaaannntssss.

Here's Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada on the matter,
When we heard that President-Elect Obama is a collector of Spider-Man comics, we knew that these two historic figures had to meet in our comics’ Marvel Universe. Historic moments such as this one can be reflected in our comics because the Marvel Universe is set in the real world. A Spider-Man fan moving into the Oval Office is an event that must be commemorated in the pages of 'Amazing Spider-Man.'

Mickey Rourke & Sam Rockwell in Iron Man 2 [Quick Thought]

Rourke's casting sounds awesome until you hear who he's playing -

“Tony Stark’s Russian alter ego, a heavily tattooed bruiser who is in the arms trade and battles Iron Man in his own nuclear-powered armored suit.” aka probably Crimson Dynamo.

Worst part of Iron Man = final fight with suit fighting suit. Please no more suit fighting suit. I'm sure Iron Man has other enemies. He's gotta. It's the only criterion I wanted met for Iron Man 2. No effing alter ego bullshit. That was the first Iron Man. And Hulk. Come on.

As for Sam Rockwell, in talks to play Justin Hammer? I approve. Because I approve of Sam Rockwell doing anything.

End quick thought

Watchmen Doing It Right

By now I'm sure all of you have seen the new Japanese Watchmen trailer, as well as the featurette focusing on the Minutemen. Just wanted to throw my two cents in real quick. But first, in case you haven't seen it, the trailer.

Now, as some of you may know, I saw 25 minutes of Watchmen a couple months ago. It was absolutely beautiful. I saw the Comedian's death, the opening credits (history of the Minutemen/Crimebusters through live action, moving dioramas, set to Dylan's "The Times, They Are A Changin'"), Silk Spectre & Nite Owl breaking Rorschach out of prison & basically all of the Dr. Manhattan focused issue, with him on Mars, reliving his life. It was all gorgeous and I pretty much cried the whole time, but the ONE thing that made me go "Hrm. We'll have to see about that one" was Nixon.

This Nixon is slightly older - he is going into his 3rd term, so that's to be expected - but to see someone in full Nixon makeup, who is clearly not Nixon, is a little jarring at first. It's not like Frank Langella, a brilliant actor playing Nixon - it's a dude in Nixon face. Not sure if I'm explaining the distinction well, but there's a big difference between someone playing Nixon and someone doing Nixon. Granted, seeing him is better than only hearing his voice a la Recount, but it's still odd. It took me a moment to get used to the cartoonish face and realize that an exaggerated older Nixon is just a part of Watchmen's reality. But it made me nervous. Would it pull people out of the movie early on? Would it elicit laughter? Would it be the thing that everyone jumped to as the "Would have been great except..." element?

Luckily this Japanese trailer has come around, featuring snippets of Nixon's face and voice and I think this is a GREAT move. Getting the audience used to it now can only help in the end, making the reveal less jarring in the actual film. I hope.

How do you feel about Nixon make up? Care? Don't care?

And if you haven't checked it out already, be sure to head over to Apple for the HD featurette about the Minutemen.

As for the list of the worst films...I've seen Speed Racer & The Day the Earth Stood Still and I'm POSITIVE those weren't the worst on the list. So I'm not really in any position to make any predictions or really even give much of an opinion. But I'd love to hears if you have one!

90210 Semi-Live Blogging [Loss of 12 Fangirl Points]

One of the many stupid faces made by Shenae Grimes

One of my favorite pastimes has become getting somewhat intoxicated and watching 90210. It's so epically bad that I'm always inspired to live blog it as I watch - even if that live blog happens hours after show has already aired. The strange thing about this show is that it isn't even entertainingly bad, it's just...bad. Things make no sense, the characters are wholly uninteresting and it's an exercise in the worst acting and writing possible. Yet I can't stop watching. Like a train wreck where you just can't look away? Absolutely. In fact, this show is SO awful, none of my friends watch it. Not even the friends who watch trashy reality shows or good CW fare like Gossip Girl. No one. So why do I write this live blog? I have no idea. I suppose it's an outlet to express my frustration over just how offensively bad this program is? Yes, that's it. Got it. One week I'll aim to do an ACTUAL live blog. For the none of you who watch the show, let alone watch it in real time. Gonna go shoot myself now.

Live Blog after the jump

Previously on 90210...oh god, already everything's stupid.

Exposittiiiooonnnn Allleeerrttttt. Omg remember how we went skiing? Omg remember how I hung out with our half brother? Omg.

Are they even trying to act well? Any of them? At all? TRY.

Annie is a huge bitch too. Ick. Shenae Grimes is gross.

MAD TV, what up!

The thoughts in Shenae Grimes' head during this classroom scene - "Look pretty look pretty look pretty, look interested but pretty, interested but pretty"

Black people only go to Beverly if their fathers are in the music business. WOW, 90210.

Everyone's crazy. Everyone is insane.

Fake half brother is a HOTTIE, woah. He says arithmetic funny.

Eyu, he may be hot, but he is your BROTHER (so you think) so STOP fighting over him! Grossssss!

Jessica Lowndes = the best actress on the show

I like that she said Ms Walsh and Ms Taylor instead of Brenda and Kelly. Good work, writers. You get a point!

No family does this. No family plays Pictionary like that. Other games, sure. But no one has an easel and giant pad of paper and giant marker just lying around.

Shenae Grimes needs to stop making so many faces

It's all so predictable

Opening Credits - finally

Fake half brother is clever

Fake half brother is gonna kill Annie

She is suspicious. I can tell because her acting style is from the Captain Obvious school of acting.

Do NOT give him the money, come ON, I call laaaaame

Annie is gonna tell Dixon she has suspicions! Do it! I know you are gonna!

"What do you think about Shawn?" BAM, she did it.

Hasn't Shawn aka fake half brother been here for like a month now? Wouldn't he have made ONE friend? Like, oh, say, Naomi? Getting a call from a local number is not that weird.

Brothers don't kiss sisters on the head. Stop it.

"Probably should have thought of that before you slept with him." Really? REALLY? You went on like ONE date with hot teacher, get over it, kelly!!

I don't know if i buy it, Brenda.

Return of the peach pit!

That giant Dr. Pepper sign on the counter just literally frightened me. Why is it so large?? What's happening??

DIXON DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO BE BLACK. THAT IS THE STORY LINE. WHY.

Come on lady, his wife is right there...

Grown ups on the cw are boring except for lily & rufus

90210 thinks it's being hip by saying "Death Proof."

Adrianna is so pretty!

The director made her gesture towards Kelly & Brenda with her head during the rehab reunion scene. Poor form. Milk was a bad choice.

Stop looking at Kelly while you speak, Brenda. Everyone on this show is OBVIOUSville

Dustin Mulligan sucks. Maybe that's why he had three lines in this episode.

"of Shawn and ME", not "of Shawn and I!" UGH. Come on! Ninth grade grammar!

Um that's SEXUAL. Those are SEXUAL photos. EYU.

And no one talks about her brother like that unless the brother is a baby. "OHMAIGOD LOOKIT HOW CUTE?!"

She just left school to go home. In the middle of the day. Is anyone else noticing this?

This will only be cool if Annie tricks Shawn by trying to sleep with him.

A sponsor wouldn't just walk away like that after revealing that kind of information

Oh this show is...it's doing things...Dixon says he didn't know this many black people live in Beverly Hills.

Dixon is cooler all of a sudden. Literally. I just found him to be not lame for the first time ever.

He is not a smart man, Annie's dad. Not a smart man.

I like what Annie's mom is doing right now with the acting

Shawn pulled a Memento, big time.

Come on Annie, don't be fooled!

Okay so he is in on it with the PI. Got it! Shady PI.

HIV tests have same day results? I thought those took two weeks. I mean, they do. It takes 2 weeks. Not an hour. ARrgghh.

DOCTORS. NO! THAT! No, that's not how that would happen. She would at least ask her into another room instead of being like "P.S. you're pregnant! Since you're 16 I can totally say it in front of everyone, that won't be awkward for you or anything." omgomg NOTHING MAKES SENSE IN REALITY ON THIS SHOW

Aw just when Adrianna got to stop crying, buhh

Good actress

I'm scared too! Like Annie! Listen to the stupid Canadian girl!

Paternity Test should ALWAYS happen before giving money away, yes, obviously, duh, helloooo, but oh yeah, reality doesn't apply here, got it

"you shock me" ?? seriously?? what does that even mean?

gospelll

OMG SHE'S A LESBIAN. ROCK. did NOT see that coming

i didn't pay attention to that scene. what just happened? oh, kelly and brenda, yes

So it was in fact about Dixon not knowing how to be black and not wanting to tell Silver. Wow.

He IS gonna kill her, TOLD YOU

Okay, maybe not

MAYBE HE IS OMG

He is one creepy motherfucker

Is he gone? He is so gone. Knew it.

Navid is gonna know you called, silly Adrianna. Missed call.

Why leave Annie & Naomi alone together? They hate each other. Oh, so this dumb scene can happen.

Bad Acting 101.

How is this Annie's fault?

This show sucks

Ajira Book a Flight Cracked! [LOST ARG]

If you've been getting the Dharma Special Access emails or saw this post then you know a brand new Lost ARG has begun! It involves Ajira Airways and Lost fans all over the world had spent days deciphering clues and sharing information with each other via message boards. The goal was to find out exactly how the "Book a Flight" section should be filled in. Clues were in the form of a photo that flashed during a Season 5 promo (pictured above), hints from Lindeloff & Cuse in the DSA emails, the info on the Ajira homepage and a boarding pass you can turn into an Oragami ball. And being really smart with a computer.

The info to fill in in the Book a Flight section, how it was figured out, and what was revealed about the future of Lost - after the jump :)

1) One Way
2) From: Los Angeles, CA (We know it's flight 316 - flight 316 leaves at 11:30am. When the home page flashes the time and weather of LA, the time is 11:30. Therefore we know the flight is departing from LA)
3) To: Guam (From Origami Solution, plus the HEX code in the About Us section is "Where America's day Begins", Guam's motto)
4) Departing: 1/21/2009 (Season 5 Premiere date, in photo from Season 5 promo)
5) Flight #316 11:30am (Flight 316 in photo, 316 is the name of an episode, HEX codes reveal passages from John 3:16 & page 316 of Ulysses.)
6) Adults: 10 (not sure why - some say Oceanic 6, plus Ben (or Walt), Locke, Desmond and you - the one booking the flight)
7) Children: 0
8) Promotional Code: 112114111109111 (From the Sky Club Card on the home page - numbers converted by smart people becomes "Promo")

Enter this information and get taken to a seating chart.

Whenever you click a certain number of times, a new image pops up providing potential spoilers for season five. They are as follows, info courtesy of Nickb123 from Octogan Global Recruiting.

Third seat selected - a shot of LAX airport.
4th - code N824
10th - a departure timetable.
15th - a shot of an airport lounge (Ajira logo in the background on the wall).
24th - an image of a young woman (DSA spoiler).
34th - an image of a man (DSA spoiler).
35th - the "lamp post" DSA logo.
36th - your seat number will be accepted and you can download a new boarding pass.

Here is my boarding pass (note: they are all the same)

Here are screen caps of all the photos you see for a split second after the clicks:

Right now the big questions are: What does N824 mean? And what does it mean that the departures screen cap shows Flight 316 going to Guam AND Hawaii?

More updates when I discover more!

On Force Fields

Every hundred years or so, mankind devises a new technology so groundbreaking that it causes a paradigm shift, changing the way we live our lives, enjoy our entertainment, or -- unfortunately perhaps the most significant change -- the way we fight our wars. Come Inauguration Day, President Obama will have countless opportunities to work towards such shifts. We have heard talk of many of his plans, and I am optimistic that they will be productive. However, there is one area of our great nation that needs dramatic change that he has not yet grasped. We need a change in our approach to defense. What change? I'll tell you -- FORCE FIELDS.

Redirecting the bulk of our military spending to force field technology could, in the long run, greatly increase security and reduce spending. There is a long science fiction history proving the effectiveness of this strategy. Plus, force fields are badass. Yes, I know, it's exciting. I'm pretty jazzed about it, myself, but before I jump into the plethora of possible implementations, allow me to cite some precedent for this seemingly radical change.

Come with me to ancient China, the 3rd century B.C. First Emperor Qin Shi Huang wants to protect his newly-unified China from northern Xiongnu invaders. What does he do? He builds a wall. THE wall. The Great Wall of China. It's big, and it's in your way. He thinks that perhaps a big barrier will repel some attacks, discourage others, and generally keep more of his people alive. Perhaps some of the more aggressive soldiers scoffed at this seemingly cowardly approach, but this may have stemmed from the rumors I heard that Great Wall duty sucked, because it was pretty chilly up there. Turns out, though, The Wall worked. Later dynasties maintained this wall and improved upon it. Today, parts of it still stand. While history showed that the wall did not make its defended invincible, it was tremendously effective.

Now follow me to 8th century Greece, after the jump...

The Spartans, in their quest for military and abdominal superiority, implement a phalanx infantry formation, which may or may not have been inspired by the Sumerians. The strength of this tight battle formation relies on a gapless wall of shields, combined with spears, making a frontal attack extremely difficult. While the Spartans could hack up their enemies with the best of them, the first step was to prevent damage.

Now, before I move on, note this: while Sun Tzu, Machiavelli and others would counter that the best defense is to take the initiative with offense, keep in mind that I am not advocating dissolution of our nation's offensive capabilities. I am, rather, suggesting that perhaps our focus should be shifted a bit. Hell, the department is called the Department of Defense, not the Department of Excessive Bombing. And hey, force fields can be used offensively, too. You'll see...as you read on.

So, I've exhibited some historical precedent for the advantages of barriers, and I know what you're thinking: "Yea, I get it. Walls are effective. But walls aren't as exciting or versatile as rockets OR Gundams." Lucky for me, science fiction has left me a long history of really sweet force field use to draw examples from. I will now present some of these to you, to show just how much we can do with force fields...

Homeland Security (Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within)
Here, we see the most obvious use of force fields -- keep the baddies out. Earth has been infested by an alien species known as Phantoms, so mankind retreats into "barrier cities" protected by giant force fields. I don't think I need to say much more to tell you why this is useful, but I will add this: these force fields are keeping out aliens, aliens that can kill you just by touching you. I know I would be comforted if the entire U.S. were surrounded by one of these. Wouldn’t you?

Interplanetary Defense (Star Wars: Return of the Jedi)
I know this doesn't seem relevant to us now, but if alien invaders come to kill Earth (and, let's face it, with our first black president elected, the future is unfolding just as we predicted), why not just stop them before they even get here? The Empire defends the Death Star by use of a large force field. Now, I realize that they had trouble keeping it from ultimately being deactivated, but keep in mind that we have no furry Ewok meddlers living on our moon to give our shield generator any trouble. It is also important to note that this implementation of force field is invisible, giving invaders a false sense of security when, in fact, the force field will be QUITE operational when their friends arrive.

Offense (Star Wars: The Phantom Menace)
I promised you and Sun Tzu that force fields can be used in offense, so here you are. In The Phantom Menace, the Gungans use mobile force fields to protect their warriors from projectile attack. The important distinction of this version of force field is that, while it blocks all incoming projectiles, it allows for outgoing projectiles, making it a great tool for both ground-based and aerial combat. Of course, the Gungans ended up performing rather poorly in this battle, but let's not blame that on the force field. Also, this technique was later implemented in the Halo universe, so you know it works.

Environmental Protection (Spaceballs)
Pacifists, I'm looking out for you, too! The planet Druidia here has used force field technology to protect their atmosphere from would-be thieves. This suggests that we could implement yet another variation of force field to, say, patch our O-Zone layer. Wouldn’t that be neat? We could also protect endangered species from poachers by using miniature force fields activated when the animals are tagged, though then we run the risk of force field-protected rhinoceroses conquering all our major world capitals, but, really, I think the rhinos will stay cool.

Everything Else, Really (Star Trek)
Seriously, Star Fleet knows their force fields. They use the things as prison cells, patches for battered starships, shields to block outside communication and prevent espionage, and more. Plus, when was the last time you heard Kirk/Picard/Janeway/that guy from Enterprise say "Divert all power AWAY from shields." Doesn't happen. Shields are always the last thing they want to give up, other than, MAYBE, life support, but even that gets sacrificed sometimes for some good reinforced-aft-shield action.

In conclusion, force field technology is not only effective, it is versatile and will satisfy military-types and pacifists alike. As for feasibility, the U.S. spent over $700 billion on defense in 2008. Come on. Scientists around the world are doing amazing work in physics. Couldn't we take, say, $300 billion and put it towards this? I'm sure NASA and the EPA would be willing to chip in a little. Dear President Obama, the power is yours. Make us proud.
