For those of you who are looking to expand your game horizons, here's my primer on some recent games you should be aware of, categorized by games I am assuming you are aware of. The Portal Lover
Portal was an essentially flawless new experience in action-puzzle gaming. So what game do you give that Portal fanatic in your life? Try some of these brain-tickling gems for the thinking gamer...
Braid*(XBox 360) - A surprisingly thought-provoking retelling of the classic Mario-style, mixed in with the power of time manipulation. It's the top-rated XBox Live Arcade game ever.

The Guitar Hero
Your options for music games have exploded from the once-simple "Guitar Hero or Guitar Hero 2?" decision. Of course, you have your Rock Band, Rock Band 2, and Guitar Hero World Tour, but perhaps your gift-recipient wants to put the plastic axe down? Try one of these...
Patapon*(PSP) - A tribe of cyclops warriors attempt to regain their former glory, and you are there god, communicating through drum patterns. Infectious.
Audiosurf*(PC) - It's like Tron fused with your music collection. Load any song in your library into the game and play it as an original level!

The Final Fantasy Fanatic
Life is hard for a Final Fantasy player; you only get a major new Final Fantasy every few years. Fortunately, it has been a pretty good year for Role Playing Gamers, if they are willing to branch out...
Mass Effect (PC, XBox 360) - Technically, this game was released last year, but it still deserves some love. An RPG set in a Star Trek-ish universe. Don't be frightened by the action, shooter gameplay. There's plenty of familiar stat upgrading and side quests to make you feel right at home.
Fallout 3 (PC, PS3, XBox 360) - More shooting here, but in a post-apocalyptic Washington DC stuck in a 1950's aesthetic.
Chrono Trigger (DS) - I'm cheating again. This is an old SNES classic, but it was just re-released for the DS! Plus, it's a Squaresoft (Final Fantasy developer) game. Be prepared. The look and sound are thoroughly retro.
Valkyria Chronicles*(PS3) - Much closer to the Final Fantasy player's heart. A true epic Japanese RPG with a unique art style and strategic gameplay.

The Lego Gamer
The Lego series from Traveler's Tales has produced a slew of cutesy remakes of classics - Lego Star Wars, Lego Indiana Jones and Lego Batman - but if this is growing stale for the gamer who likes casual, stress-free play, try these...
LittleBigPlanet (PS3) - On the surface, a fun, relaxing, four-player platforming adventure with cute bean-bag characters. When you get tired of the basics, though, there are powerful tools for creating your own levels and machines, as well as a whole online community of others' levels.
The Katamari series*(iPhone, PS2, PSP, XBox 360) - Described by many as the happiest game you'll ever play. Essentially, you just roll a ball around and roll up objects, growing from the size of a paperclip to rolling up entire planets. With an adorable, kooky style and a catchy soundtrack, it's, simply-put, smiles in a box.

The Halo Junkie
Your friend plays Halo... a lot. If he/she isn't playing Halo 3, first get him/her up to speed. Halo 3 is the best in the series and really lives up to the hype. However, if you're sick of the addiction, try to wean your friend onto one of these shooters...
Far Cry 2 (PC, PS3, XBox 360) - A huge open world shooter. Perhaps not revolutionary, but the gorgeous world is something to be experienced.
Left 4 Dead (PC, XBox 360) - Personally, I hate zombies, so I can't go near this game. However, it's essentially a zombie team-survival situation generator. Endless replayability with a team of four friends online.

The Night is Always Darkest Just Before I Take Out Another Thug

Eidos, developer of the recently-announced Batman: Arkham Asylum game, just released some new screenshots to the public. What we know already is that the game will focus strongly on Batman's combat abilities and allow you to pull neat tricks like distracting enemies with their own companions' screams of terror. Anyway, one of the new screens has me particularly interested...

If you look above, you'll see the The Dark Knight suspended above his prey. I am hoping that this screen is from actual gameplay. Allowing players to lie in wait for enemies by hanging upside-down would be a very nice treat in 2009 when the game releases. Here's hoping...

Greatest Chart EVER [Geekgasm Alert]

Oh Io9, how I love thee.

One of my favorite websites has made a chart detailing the Unofficial Theory of Sci-Fi Connectivity.

Here's what they have covered:

-Direct Crossover - when characters from various universes actually meet up i.e. Sgt. Al Powell in last week's Chuck
-Easter Egg - elements from one universe appears in another (geek inside jokes) i.e. Captain Kirk drinking Slusho in the new Star Trek
-Brand Crossover - when universes meet up in the world of toys, comics, etc i.e. Star Wars/Transformers

Io9 specifies that the list does not get every last piece of connectivity in, but IMHO, it's still pretty damn good.

Well Hello Beautiful

Oh hello there! My name is Teddy, and I have a story for you...
Once upon a time, there was a young boy who played a ton of videogames. Like, a ton. That young boy then grew up, and continued to play said games. Also, he makes them now.

I didn't promise it would be a great story. Anyway, I have been graciously invited to join in on the fangirl/boy-ing at All Things Fangirl. If you hadn't gathered from the engrossing tale above, I am a game designer and, perhaps more relevantly, a gamer. I'll be posting a good deal about said games and other observations I've been known to make. Good to be here!

Damon Lindeloff Only Wears Geek Shirts [Dharma Special Access]

Another Dharma Special Access video was sent out to members of the Initiative today (hai I'm a bus driver, how is you?), this time covering one of the special features on the Lost Season 4 dvd. Here are some of the highlights of this weeks special access


-On the DVD, there is an option to watch all the flash forwards from season four in order
-That feature also has footage of future Lindeloff & Cuse warning them how to not screw up the end of Lost - The peak below shows us that Lindeloff moves on to sports shirts in the future

Do These Posters Work For You? [Analysis]

Images of three new posters were released today, for Fast & Furious, Land of the Lost (both Universal) and Push (Summit).



Can't say this one really does anything for me. I'm not a big car person, not even super shiny cars with a machine gun in the middle. I do like the idea of the original cast reuniting for a proper sequel, but I stress - the idea of it. While I couldn't care less about this franchise, bringing the old gang back is a nice gesture to the fans. This poster tells me, "look it's the original cast, fans!" as well as "ready for some sleek car badASSness?" If I were into that kinda thing, I'd probably be excited. But I'm not. So...meh.

Not gonna lie, this one excites me a little bit. While I've never seen the show from the 70s, I loved the remake that aired in the 90s on ABC's Saturday mornings. I was five years old, don't you judge me. This poster captures the essence well of what I suspect this movie will be. Silly, campy, fun, but with some very cool action sequences. Still don't know if it's the type of movie I'll see opening weekend, but if it gets good enough reviews, I'll at least see it in theaters.

Heh, this is cool. I, along with everyone in Hall H at Comic Con during the Summit panel, have seen a few scenes from Push and I think this poster gives us a good idea of what's in store. The colors are very reminiscent of the film's stock & filters and I like how the poster focuses on the powers, not the actors in the film. The coolest elements of the scenes were the grainy realism and the explanation & implementation of the powers. Here's the description of the film from the MTV Splash Page,

A group of former operatives from a secret government agency uncover a mystery that could rock the status quo of the “enhanced” world — a world in which individuals are scientifically augmented with special mental abilities that include moving objects and seeing the future, among other abilities.

The only top movies of 2008 list that matters (until i post mine)

So finally, after - hold on, LQ just put in the sex and the city movie and i need a moment to asphyxiate on my own vomit... okay, i'm dead now - list after list after slumdog millionaire after milk after zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz... someone has released a list that suggests that its contributors actually sought out quality films rather than simply sipping on the piddle that the studios were gracious enough to share with us. and that "someone" is somewhat predictably FILM COMMENT, that last american bastion of intelligent film criticism, courtesy of the film society of lincoln center. and here is their list:

now, this list is based on a point system from a large number of critics and filmmakers and the like, so it doesn't reflect a particular individual's opinion... meaning that a film that everyone liked enough is going to place higher than a film one person is obsessed with. more than anything it's just another reminder that i missed a couple of really killer films this year - I'm looking at you gomorrah. and i had tickets to see you at NYFF! BAH!

anyhoo, no dark knight. anywhere. huzzah. and some other top ten stalwarts. and the reason is not because they're bad movies, cause they ain't = not by a long shot. it's just that they're nowhere in the same REALM as the best films of the year... just completely outclassed in ambition, artisanship, and effect... in my ever so humble opinion. but i'm sad to say that my VERY favorite film of the year (that i saw) is nowhere to be found on this or any other list i've seen thus far. i'm sorry i'm sorry, the suspense i just created is gonna rob you of a few nights' sleep until i post my list. thems be the breaks.

1,000 Greatest Movies of All Time

Looking for a REAL greatest movies list?

They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? has posted their 2008 list of the 1000 greatest films of all time. Most of the films retain a slot near their previous slot, while some (MASH, An American in Paris, T2, My Fair Lady & Rushmore to name a few) were just added this year. You can sort the list by Rank, Title, Year, Director, Country, Length, Omissions (which films got cut this year), Alternative Titles, Sources (whose opinions were used to compile the list) and Facts.

Speaking of facts - here are some fun ones!

-The director with the most films on the list is John Ford with 18, followed closely by Fritz Lang (16), Luis Bunuel (15), Jean-Luc Godard (14), Alfred Hitchcock (14), Ingmar Bergman (13), Federico Fellini (12), Howard Hawks (11), Stanley Kubrick (11), Akira Kurosawa (11) & Jen Renoir (11).
-The decade with the most films on the list? The 60s with 181 films. The years with the most films? 1961 & 1963 with 22 films each. Damn. There certainly weren't 22 movies this year that will be highly regarded as the best of their time forty years from now.
-The longest movie on the list is Heimat, a German film from 1984 that clocks in at 940 minutes. The shortest is the 14 minute long French film, Le Voyage dans la Lune, made in 1902.

Sgt. Al Powell Loves Them Hostage Situations [Crossover Alert!]

Finally got around to watching Chuck this week and was treated to a delightful surprise. Turns out Sgt. Al Powell's definitely been back in the game since Bruce Willis forced him to face his fear in 1988's Die Hard. Twenty years later the Sergeant is dealing with yet another hostage situation - luckily this one is slightly less dire than Die Hard's crisis. And instead of Alan Rickman running the show, we get one of Rickman's co-stars in Galaxy Quest, Jed Rees, as the man holding everyone hostage. Evil character extraordinaire Michael Rooker also pops up fittingly as cop who's really a Fulcrum agent. His character name? Mauser. As in Art Metrano's character in the Police Academy Series.

I love shows that both reference pop culture and have the balls to pull off a crossover. Let's just hope there isn't any Die Hard memorabilia in Chuck's room or the world will explode.

Blizzards Call For Drunk History [You Tube is My Friend]

Hopefully all you readers out there are already familiar with Drunk History, but just in case, I thought I'd post one of my favorite series of videos to come out of Funny or Die. There's an insane blizzard outside in New York, so what better day to watch some drunk people tell you some stories? Afterwards, maybe you'll get inspired and find it necessary to get wasted & read some Howard Zinn.

But what is Drunk History, LQ?

The Drunk History series of online videos feature inebriated people sharing their version of specific historical events. The recounted stories are then re-enacted by professional actors while the drunken commentary plays in the background

The series was created by Derek Waters (who makes a cameo in each video) and have featured Jack Black, Michael Cera, Danny McBride & more.

Doubt kicks some SAG Ass [Oscar Watch]

The SAG nominations were announced this morning, Doubt leading the way with five nominations. Kate Winslet should be a happy camper this morning, scording two nods, one for Revolutionary Road and one for The Reader. I'm sad to see no Sally Hawkins - is this because Happy Go Lucky was a British film? I also thought we'd see Rosemarie Dewitt at least on this list for her performance in Rachel Getting Married. Fine with no Clint Eastwood or Kristen Scott Thomas on the list, as I haven't seen either of those films and do not plan on seeing them any time soon. Also snubbed from supporting actress - Marisa Tomei. Should be interesting to see who ultimately falls into the Actress categories. I do wonder where Michael Shannon is. I've heard nothing but amazing things about his performance in Revolutionary Road, but he is barely popping up on any nominations or awards lists. And will Robert Downey Jr. really score an oscar nod for Tropic Thunder?

On the television side, Jon Hamm & Elisabeth Moss and that's all there is to it.

Killing the dream.

Well, it's happened. It's out. It's on MTV news, so that means it's real, right? Keanu Reeves is not only going to make a Cowboy Bebop movie, is not even just going to play the protagonist Spike Spiegel for whom he is wrong on a number of levels (see our previous casting call post), but he is going to star as Spike Spiegel in live action movie of Cowboy Bebop that condenses the entire series into two goddamn hours.

Oh, Jesus, why. Why, God, why, explain it to me, why, why goddamnit why.

"Oh yeah, cool,” he said when I asked him about the flick recently. “We’re trying to do that.”

Trying and already failing.

For anyone who's seen the series, I don't have to say anything other than the above for you to understand how fundamentally awful this is going to be. Some people out there, however, haven't seen it. Maybe they didn't have the time, maybe they think anime is stupid, who knows. But let's just jot down a quick little laundry list of the things that make the series completely amazing.

Scope. The scope of the show, on every single level, is astounding. The breadth of genres dipped into; musical styles used to terrific, startling effect; the depth and stretch and detail of the world the series takes place in, our world turned sideways after a horrific and believable accident render the Earth all but uninhabitable; the places the characters go; the places the characters come from. Cowboy Bebop is dazzlingly creative. However, in the twenty six episodes of the series and the feature film that already exists, they mined barely a fraction of the characters varied origins, the infrastructure our solar system currently runs under, etc etc. Which leads us into:

Brevity. Not just the soul of wit. A good number of the show's episodes work so well because they are brief. Portraits. Vignettes. The entire series, in the end, proves to be as cohesive as Spike's perception of reality which, if you've watched the series, you'll know... ain't so hot.

So I guess there is one thing Spike and Keanu have in common.

The Music. In the interview, Keanu says:“I think that would be a production designer’s dream...I think you just need a good production designer.”. Just? Just? Oh, no. You need much much much more than just a good production designer, but hey- that's a given. Gee, you think? Give that there are, in fact, examples of very well designed cross-genre shows (Firefly, anyway? Blade Runner, anyone?!), let's just say, yeah, okay, it's a given that the Production Designer should be pretty damn good. But hey, Keanu, how about the music? Why not give it a mention? After all, it is in the goddamn title.

If the name 'Yoko Kanno' isn't one of the first attached to this monstrosity, then the people behind are even greater asshats than I had previously thought possible.

The Crew is the soul of the show, of course. They get their own episodes to showcase their awesomeness, or their pasts, or their journeys or their whatever, though Spike remains the central figure throughout the bulk of the series. All I'm saying is, answer me this: Who the hell do you think you're going to get to play Jet Black?

Spike Spiegel sees the past in one eye and the present in the other. He's not sure if he's awake or asleep, ever. He's cool and slick and easily irritated unless he's around someone who's irritable, than he's completely unflappable. He's betrayed people, he's been betrayed, and he has an arch nemesis. He's in his late twenties. He's a jeet kune do master. And yes, he has a green afro. Keanu is totally wrong for this part. Maybe fifteen years ago he could have pulled it off, but that day has passed, and anyway, pulling it off is not good enough, not for a work like Bebop. LeePaceLeePaceLeePace. I'm not even a Lee Pace fangirl. I just jumped on the Pushing Daisies bandwagon, and before that I was only peripherally aware of his existence, like his role in Infamous. I'm not just throwing that name around because I think he's dreamy.

Although, clearly, I do.

This movie... good God almighty. This movie is such a bad idea. It was bad enough when it was just a rumor that was trailing Keanu's name. It is so much infinitely worse now that not only has that part of the rumor been confirmed, but the people for whom this is such a passion project seem to think that it is in some way a decent idea to try and take 26 episodes and condense it into 2 hours. This is more effing batshit an idea than trying to condense Watchmen into a single movie, and Watchmen actually has a linear storyline. Now, such a storyline may, in fact, be gleaned from Cowboy Bebop. Like any good story, it features things from the past coming to a head. But that's not what the series is about. That's one fraction of a character's journey through the series, that's not the bulk of it. I don't think these pepole have any idea what it is about, either, or else they wouldn't think this is a good idea.

Take a look at this clip and you’ll get an idea of why Reeves is not only a perfect-looking fit for Spiegel, but also why he thinks the most important person on the set will be the one trying to translate the series’ unique look.

MTV? You have officially crossed the line from Overrated Uberwhore to Soulless Waste. Congratulations.

Reeves revealed that this outline for the flick is currently focusing on the origins of the fictional “Bebop” drug developed by the military, which provides its users with a brief surge of superhuman reflexes and awareness. “We’re taking the Red Eye [story], the beginning part of the series,” he explained, “and then we’ll deal with the end of the series. We’re trying to figure out [the time frame]. We’re looking at the story right now."

I'm sorry, are you serious? If you're such a big damn fan of the show, how could you have possibly MISSED THE TWO HOUR THEATRICALLY-RELEASED MOVIE THAT DEALT WITH BIOLOGICAL WARFARE, REDUNDANT SOLDIERS, AND THE MILITARY?!

GodDAMNit.

Yeah, it’s so episodic and so disconnected. We’re trying to figure out what pieces to put together to tell one story,” he explained. “Because it’s such a short form, to make a 2 hour version [will be tough]. And it’s got so much of an origin-story obligation; you’ve got to get people up to speed, but you don’t want to do much of that. There are a lot of things to take into consideration, but we think we can do something good.”

Really? Cuz it's not that hard. Ballad of Fallen Angels, Jupiter Jazz 1 and 2, Real Folk Blues 1 and 2. Spike movie. Will it strip out the endless myriad of small touches and foreshadowing that make the revelations of those episodes so important? Sure. Will it push the other vibrant, interesting characters of the show to the background and allow for roughly zero time exploring them? You know it. So you know what, I take it back. Here's a plan: Don't. Don't do it. Don't make shit up about a drug of zero importance to the Bebop universe (when the important aspect would be, I don't know, the drug syndicate...) when you don't have to. When you have more than enough in those 26 episodes to make something pertinent, that comments on the projected future of man, the places technology can take and then strand us, and the search of one man to wake up.

Or, hey, do the fans, and the potential fans, a favor- and just don't do it at all.

Comics I'm Buying Today [Comic Book Wednesday]

A good day in the land of comics for LQ! Among today's choice picks, Jeph Loeb's Pleasantville-like one shot for Buffy: Season 8. In issue #20, Buffy gets sucked into her own animated show (the one that never got made), set in her high school days. I've been eagerly awaiting this issue and expect the wave of nostalgia I will feel reading it to force me into rewatching some season 2. Mmmm. Buffy Season 2.

Also out this week is Spiderman Noir #1

The year is 1933, and New York City is not-so-secretly run by corrupt politicians, crooked cops, big businesses…and suave gangland bosses like New York’s worst, the Goblin. I was definitely most proud checking off the various noir, screwball comedies, and Hitchcock films I've seen, not to mention classic science fiction & adventure films. My parents have educated me pretty well in that respect. Speaking of which - where is The Searchers on this list? My parents took me to the Chinese theater to see a reissue when I was a teenager cause it's widely known as one of the best Westerns of all time and is one of my dad's favorites. Hrmph. Actually, let's not get started on which movies should be on that list, cause we'll be here all day. But I do have some homework to do. david says scores like 46.8% are what happens when I see Dark Knight 3843948 times before seeing anything else and he probably has a point.
