Indie Pop Cover Of Lady Gaga's Telephone [Obsession of the Day]

Is Indie Pop even accurate? Who knows, I'm not the music expert on this blog, but this is too cool not to post. Although considering it has over 1 million hits on youtube, chances are you've seen it already. Oh well. Watch it again! And while you're at it, also check out Pomplamoose's covers of Nature Boy, Mr Sandman & I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing, posted below, and a shitload more over on their YouTube channel. I may or may not be obsessed...

COACHELLA AAAHHHH

This year's Coachella lineup is the BEST lineup I've ever seen! Too bad years ago I made an ironclad deal with myself that guarantees me never going back to Indio.

BUT OMG LOOK:

MUSE is headlining the second day! Julian Casablancas and Thom Yorke (????=probably/definitely) will be there too. So that covers my 3 favorite rock artists...but wait there's MORE! Like everyone I've ever loved plus musicians I'd discover and end up loving too. Why don't they just torture me a little more by adding Lady GaGa to the lineup too? Seriously, seriously...the temptation to go this year is ridiculously strong.

If I can afford it and get the time off, I might just have to break my deal with myself. Fuck. See full post

Top 5 Lost Characters - Results!

Obligatory shirtless, sweaty photo/painting? of the #1 character

Last week I started a Lost Character poll because I was interested to hear who your favorites were. I can tell you now what my boyfriend bet me. He said most people would have Ben and Locke in their top 5, whereas I argued that Lost has SO many characters that affect people in SO many ways, that those two wouldn't necessarily be in the top for the majority.

I think it's safe to say...we were both right. :)

Here's the top ten!

1. Sawyer
2. Ben
3. Locke
4. Hurley
5. Desmond
6. Faraday
7. Jack
8. Juliet
9. Tie: Charlie & Kate
10. Sayid

Does that represent your top ten? Do Sawyer, Ben, Locke, Hurley & Desmond represent your top 5? Notably absent? Jin & Sun. Although if I had kept them as one character (which, when you share flashbacks/forwards/inevitably sideways and your entire character growth and storyline is intertwined with the person AND YOU SHARE A GOD DAMN NUMBER, seems like the best & most accurate way to categorize them) they would safely come in at #11, tied with Miles. Which brings me to the rest!

11. Miles
12. Richard
13. Eko
14. Jin
15. Sun
16. Rose/Bernard
17. Tie: Jacob & Frank
18. Tie: Ana Lucia, Dogen & Claire
19. Smokey
20. Tie: Christian Shephard/Rousseau

Those who got some love, but not enough to make the top 20, are: Penny, Charlotte, Boone, Shannon, Frogurt, Caeser (really? who voted for him? really?), & Roger Linus. Those who only got one vote: Widmore, Ethan, Friendly, Michael, Libby, Lennon, Arzt, Eloise Hawking & Ilana.

People I forgot to put on the list? Marvin Candle, Nikki/Paolo, Mikhail, Alex, Karl, Keamy, Naomi & Matthew Abaddon

But my favorite part of all of this was reading your actual top fives in the comments. Only about a third chose both Locke & Ben, while most selected one or the other, but not both. Overall, each top five was incredibly distinct & specific, proving that Lost is so well-written, so diverse and represents so many different types of people, that you never know which five a given person is going to say. How many TV shows can you say that about? Not to mention the love bestowed upon characters we only got for a season or so (Faraday), characters meant to foil the ones we're supposed to love (Juliet), & characters who we only really learned something about last night (Richard).

I love Lost.

Today's entry?

In honor of last night's stellar episode of Lost,

"Dharma Initiative"

Today's results?

Today's recommended buy?

Perhaps the toughest decision yet! Today I'm gonna change it up and give you my top *three* recommended buys. From most expensive to least expensive

Dharma Clock - $35

This is a great clock. It is 10 1/2 inches by 10 1/2 inches. It sticks out from the wall about an inch and a half. It keeps great time. Hanso technology makes it run up to a year on one AA battery.
The clock face is surrounded by 12 images of various official Dharma emblems. Each individual photo is acrylic encased for protection. This is for the true collector.
Your clock will come fully assembled ready to hang on any wall, it also has a built-in, swing-out stand in the back that can be used to quickly turn this into a desk or table clock.

Dont Forget to Push the Button - Set of 5 Double-Sided Ornaments - $25

set of 5 double-sided ornaments inspired by that awesome crazy island!
each ornament is actually 2 different ornaments!
each has a glyph on one side and a number on the other.
each ornament measures about 2.75 x 3.5 inches.
the numbers sides read 108 00 (every 108 minutes!)
and the glyphs sides show what happens when you dont push the button!
if you would like one of these as a key ring, just let me know which one and i can put up a listing for $6!

Dharma Initiative Stations Rubics Cube - $10

This is a regulation size rubics cube featuring the Dharma Stations from the TV show LOST. It is a working model but should primarily be used for display purposes. I'm not sure how many turns and twists the cube can take before the decals wear down. Very colorful, fun limited use piece.

Random Lost Theory of the Day

Hurley, Jack, Sayid and Kate disappeared off of Ajira and were sent back in time. Sun, Ben, Ilana and Frank? Not so much. So why were those 4 sent back in time? My theory for now - it's because every candidate on that plane was zapped into the past. Proof that #42 Kwan is not Sun, but rather Jin OR Ji-Yeon, since Jacob after all did touch BOTH Sun & Jin.

Darlton apparently confirmed that it was because they failed to replicate the aspects of the Oceanic 815 crash, but I like my theory better. :)

Something tells me we'll be finding out something about all this next week.... See full post

Someone Shoot Me Now. American Idol Top 11 Recap!

For tonight's show, Fox decided to confuse me by making me think it was "Teen Idol" week, when really it was "Bilboard Hits" week. Perhaps a last ditch effort to try and force every contestant to be relevant, only to end up with everyone being so far from relevant (or...good) that I wanted to smash my television? I mean, JESUS. How much did we all yearn for Adam Lambert tonight? Or Kris Allen? Or Allison Iraheta, Matt Giraud, David Cook, Jason Castro, ANYONE BUT THESE PEOPLE? Let's start the recap so I still have time to rewatch Lost before bed. You know. To force away the nightmares I'll otherwise no doubt experience thanks to tonight's wholly lackluster episode of Idol. Ugh.

Lee Dewyze - The Letter by the Boxtops
Yes to horns and no guitar this week. Stepping outside of his box, I see. Coming out of his shell a little bit. Not sure about the pairing of his voice with this song. Not the best he's ever sounded. But he's officially grown on me. A SMILE! I like it when he smiles. More of that please! He's looking good. We observe that he perhaps doesn't have the same stage presence as other people. Much better in an intimate setting, he is. But I find him much more attractive now. Which...is a big plus.
Randy - Knocked it out of the box
Ellen - Felt like she was losing her favorite pen last week, but now it's back
Kara - He raised the bar for himself. He looks more comfortable on stage now. (This is true.) Tremendous progress. (Also true.)
Simon - Really surprised by song choice. That was not a recording performance, but was Lee doing something quite corny. Sounded good, but missed the point of Simon saying he needs a moment, didn't define him as a contemporary artist. Kara emphasizes that at least he is getting better.

MiB: "Don't gloat, it doesn't become you."
J: "So you tried to kill me."
MiB: "You expect an apology?"
J: "No, I guess I'm just wondering why you did it."
MiB: "Because I want to leave. Just let me leave."
J: "As long as I'm alive, you're not going anywhere."
MiB: "Now you know why I want to kill you. And I will kill you."
J: "Even if you do, someone else will take my place."
MiB: "I'll kill them too."

Chris Bauer Talks True Blood: Horror, the South and the Inner Workings of Andy Bellefleur

True Blood is awesome. We all know this. It's why we watch! With HBO airing season 2 again starting Sunday night, we wanted to celebrate with some fun True Blood related things. Wait til the liquor post. If you win the TruBlood we're giving away, you will find yourself equipped with a list of recipes to make your season 3 premier party positively debauched. Like Pam-approved levels of debauched. So, along with the chance to win a TruBlood party pack from our awesome friends at HBO and the video of that amazing kid incorporating the True Blood theme song into a medley next to the Simpsons and Firefly, we would like to offer you our exclusive sit-down with the man who portrays Bon Temps' favorite rough 'n tumble lawman, Andy Bellefleur: Chris Bauer.

Erudite Chick: So you of course have had experience with cop dramas before, and now you’re playing a police officer on True Blood, but it’s a slightly different take on it. Going into the first season’s scripts, had you read the novels in preparation?

Chris Bauer: I read the first novel, and I read the second novel, and I read some of the third. I read enough to get a sense of the atmosphere and to be responsible to the vision of the writer Charlaine Harris, so. But episodic television ends up plotting at a different tempo, developing character in a much more idiosyncratic way than a novel does, so, having shot the two seasons I kinda now feel like the world of True Blood on HBO is informed by a fifty fifty inspiration of the books and our show.

This past season had a lot of fans divided, particularly over Sookie and Bill's relationship, and the sudden fervor for Eric- but Andy Bellefleur also developed a stronger fan base. Personally, he became my favorite character on the show. And when I say favorite, I mean I favor him above all others and am kind of obsessed with him. I explained as much to Chris.

EC: Before you started filming, did you know where he was going to end up, as a character?

CB: No- First of all, thank you very much, because one of the dilemmas for me, as an actor, is that I really play the part that they write. Which means, if they write somebody who’s socially awkward, if they write somebody who’s alienating, if they write somebody who’s full of faults, that’s the character I’m going to play. Frequently, that has the effect on the audience that it has on the other characters, so in the same way that people are calling Andy crazy and they want him out of the bar? Sometimes I feel like fans have sort of a lot of critical feelings about Andy. So for you to say that you liked him is really, really meaningful for me. Because I think he’s a good guy! And I think that he’s a human being, and I think he’s evolving, and I think one of the great validations of the theme of True Blood is that it’s the circumstances of the world of Bon Temps that are sort of pushing him into more and more sympathetic and human territory.

You know, this season I think he went through some obstacles that are going to be very playable in successive seasons, and that what started as a guy who was fiercely insecure and way too into his title and authority, looking for a personality behind his badge, was humbled enough that he might- I mean, look how it ended up. He ended up essentially teaming up with his arch enemy. And what I love is, we can still play it in a super real way. They’re such great writers. And the inspiration from Allen through the whole writing staff is such that they give- if you think about it, they have 60 minutes to hand out character development to double digit characters.

EC: Yeah, it’s a huge cast.

CB: It’s huge! And we get like five and seven minutes on average to make our mark and push the character forward. You can only do that with good writing.

22 TV Theme Songs in 7 Minutes. By One Guy.

This is too awesome. One dude. Multiplied. Playing guitar and keyboard and harmonizing with himself. Featuring the theme songs of geektastic shows Firefly, True Blood, Big Bang Theory, Freaks & Geeks and more. My only complaint - where's Lost? Just kidding. Sort of. But really? Where's Buffy.

Enjoy! Oh. Also. The guy is hot. Just saying.

In honor of HBO re-airing the awesome season two starting this Sunday, we've decided to celebrate one of the best shows on TV with one True Blood-themed post per day for the rest of the week.

90210 Semi-Live Blogging "Girl-Fight"

Previously on 90210:

Teddy loves Silver more than anyone he's ever met. Except his sister. Silver's jealous cause she doesn't know lady is his sister. Dixon is a douche-bag, but no one seems to have caught on yet cause everyone's an idiot. Naomi & Liam have no chemistry (I could have told you that) and Jasper's a creepy fuck, as usual. Oh and he put drugs in Navid's locker. Uh oh.

Onward!

Photobucket

Ladies are chatting after shopping & reveal that Navid got suspended. Thanks for the exposition.

The show acknowledges that Naomi buys too much crap and I appreciate it

Annie is with her creepy non-boyfriend who she only just realized was creepy, somehow

Jasper: I'm hitting the table! I mean business!

Jasper wants Annie to come over. She tells him to STFU. He hits the table. So she goes to his house anyway. Lame.

Dixon got a hair cut! He looks 10 instead of 12 now! Good work, show. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------->

This is a dream sequence. NO STOP KISSING I HATE IT WHEN SILVER AND DIXON KISS. Gross. Dixon's wearing cologne. Almost more gross. Almost.

Birth mother something something blah blah adults Dixon blah

Silver is totes as grossed out by Dixon as I am. Maybe she realized his name is Dixon and that's a fake name. Not that Silver is much better.

Dixon is pouting like the 4 year old he is. Ughhh.

Naomi and Liam continue to have zero chemistry. Ivy & Liam continue to have lots of chemistry.

"I don't understand why he's so stiff around me. I mean, outside the bedroom. Inside the bedroom, he's plenty stiff."
...this syntax is so many kinds of wrong. Proper English would have resulted in something more like this:
"I don't understand why he's so stiff around me. I mean, outside the bedroom. Inside the bedroom, I know exactly why he's stiff."
You're welcome, 90210, any time

Naomi wants Ivy to hang with her and Liam. Best idea ever. Except not at all. Prepare to hate your life in about T minus 15 minutes, Naomi.

Jasper: "If we have sex, then you'll remember how magical things used to be between us."
AAEEYUU GROSS
Jasper, I can't sleep with you
YOU HAVE TO!
(AHHH!)

Well, at least this season is making me feel something (disgust) which is more than I can say for last season.

Top Five Lost Characters

Randomly ended up sort of playing a game with my boyfriend last night that involved naming Lost characters until we couldn't name any more. This stemmed from the question "Who are your top 5 favorite Lost characters?" which led to us making a bet that most people would have two particular people in their top 5, across the board. I argued that I thought the top 5s would be incredibly varied and to prove it, I started naming awesome characters. And the rest is history.

So who are your top 5 favorite Lost characters? Whose backstory eps do you look the most forward to? Did you squeal "A SAWYER EPISODE!" the moment the show flashed to him last night? Not saying that I did or anything (I totally did).

After much consideration, and by much, I do mean little, by top five Lost characters, in no particular order, are:

Locke
Ben
Sawyer
Faraday
Desmond?! Richard?! What about Hurley?! Miles makes me laugh. I like Kate more than most. STOP MAKING ME CHOOSE.

Okay so I have four and then 5th gets fuzzy

So who are your favorites? And do you think you can name more Lost characters than me? I don't know, man. I have a good memory. But I did totally forget about Theresa Palmer. Damnit.

Oh hey, look, a poll! Vote here, name your top five in the comments section, let's see who wins this bet.

Craps. I forgot the following characters (but you wouldn't have picked them anyway, right?)
Alex, Karl, Keamy, Naomi, Matthew Abaddon, Nikki, Paolo

Dear New York Times, If You Can’t Do Something Well… Don’t. [Fanboy Edition]

From one of our token Fanboy contributers, david! His review of sorts of FFXIII, for your consumption - Muse

something doesn’t really jive between the New York Times and videogame reviews. the paper just seems too stuffy and venerated to talk hit points and summon spells without hinting at an incongruity that makes the whole effort seem a bit amateurish… like a stern-faced adult trying to seriously critique something on the other side of the generational divide. and such a bias would seem fantastically unfair, as the NYT has been nothing if not democratic and immensely forward-thinking with its attention to technology over the past two decades or so (and perhaps before… i wouldn’t really know). yet for someone who has traditionally turned to the annals of EGM, Gamefan, IGN, etc. for their videogame news and reviews, the NYT is going to have to find a writer willing to supplant the paper’s usual diffidence with an obvious passion for gaming if they have any hope of surmounting the unfair but very real skepticism some gamers (i.e. me, and… well, i haven’t really talked bout this with anyone else, but i’ll just go ahead and assume everyone agrees with me) have of their scant videogame coverage.

and their recent review of Final Fantasy XIII is not helping. in fact, it’s hurting. a lot.

… if you haven’t noticed by now, the following rant is going to be as geeky as it is tossed off, and both reveal and revel in a nerdy element in which i seldom indulge in a public forum. proceed with caution.

now… my initial distaste from this article comes from the fact that i SERIOUSLY disagree with the writer’s assessment of the game (and we’ll get into that). honestly, if i saw eye-to-eye with the writer, i probably wouldn’t be sufficiently motivated to bitch about the review’s real problem, which is ultimately its supremely myopic perspective on the fundamental nature of JRPGs (japanese role-playing games) as well as the review’s penchant for harping on a single, ill-explained point rather than discussing the rest of a seriously multi-faceted product.

so, a real quick primer for those who didn’t cut school in 7th grade to get Knights of the Round in FF VII or… later snuck out of high school (literally crawling behind cars) to rush to EB Games, buy FF X, play it through lunch, and haul ass back to school for their final class of that day… Final Fantasy is a series of stand-alone japanese role-playing games that have come to assume tremendous importance in the world of interactive games. renowned for their innovation and emotionally driven and diverse narratives (always) and their precedent-shattering production values (recently), these 40-60 hour adventures each create a unique universe as vast and well-considered as a Star Wars, and - in selling almost a BILLION units - have helped Final Fantasy to become a celebrated brand in the U.S. in addition to being a national treasure in Japan.

so when Seth Schiesbel writes that the animation and visual splendor in FF XIII (the first iteration of the series for an HD platform) rivals that of Avatar, he’s not kidding. in my not even remotely humble opinion, this is the most beautiful videogame ever made. the graphics are unpredictably mind-boggling… by which i mean they exceed their extremely impressive technical measure with the ends to which they work. the vistas, landscapes (metro-future, outback, fantasy, etc…) architecture, and character design are so complete… so thorough… it feels as if the environments exist far beyond the reach of the game’s camera and whatever the system happens to have rendered at that moment. the art design is genuinely humbling… and in a way that would be impossibly time-consuming in a more free-form adventure like a Bioware game (and yes, the blu-ray factor rides to the rescue again, providing yet another decisive victory for the PS3 as the xbox 360 stumbles over its antiquated DVD format yet again).

and the impressive art design is itself in service to something greater - perhaps the richest of the series’ narratives. replete with the melodrama and emotionally facile soliloquizing that has long since been a staple of even superior japanese storytelling, (and is now ubiquitous in even the best of JRPGs and anime), the tale is nevertheless an indelible and emotionally vivid dystopian saga that starts in a familiar place but is prone to bold decisions.

in short… and bear with me, here…there’s an abandoned planet called Pulse (think Australia), and floating above it in its atmosphere, a bubbled mini-planet called Cocoon, on which all the people live in their future-fantastic cities. the dynamic is governed by a mysterious race of demi-gods called the fal’cie, and they have the people of Cocoon pretty convinced that Pulse is an evil place that is constantly attempting to destroy Cocoon. sounds pretty topical, right? right. when the game begins, a fal’cie from Pulse has been found on Cocoon, thus “contaminating” everyone in the vicinity… and the forces of Cocoon have begun to “purge” Cocoon of its contaminated victims, relocating them (via train, initially) to Pulse. on or around one such train - for six different reasons - are our heroes… who eventually encounter the Pulse fal’cie and are made its l’cie (essentially servants of the fal’cie, all of whom are given a Focus to which they never learn the details… a mission they have to discover & then complete in order to have a peaceful eternity). so you’ve got some holocaust imagery… a bit of jihad… this is a premise ripe for allegory, and being a videogame one assumes it’s going to be allegory of a rather facile sort… but even though the game eventually winds down to a simple matter of choice and human agency, the choices that are made - and their consequences - make this a surprisingly moving saga.

now… traditionally JRPGs are full of towns the heroes can visit and shop, replete with non-playable characters the hero can visit, from whom the hero can steal, with whom the hero can exchange canned dialogue, etc… but since everyone in Cocoon is terrified of / trying to kill our branded heroes this time around, towns and such just don’t make sense. you’re constantly on the run, and that’s reflected in the game’s design, which is a lot more action-driven than previous entries in the series. it translates into a lot of corridors… a lot of narrowly pre-determined paths, which might seem ironic given that we’ve concluded the game is essentially about the power of human agency. and the NYT review understands that as the key discrepancy between JRPGs and American RPGs… japanese games are largely interactive, meticulously designed stories, whereas American games are a bit more open… with dozens of endings and the ability to decide who your bland, voiceless, but endlessly customizable hero marries and if they’re an elf or an orc or whatever. and Schiesbel is correct in that a set narrative is not necessarily antithetical to a more open style of gameplay. but that also doesn’t mean that crafting a narrative that pushes the player along at a certain clip and in a certain direction as is dictated by the protagonist’s circumstances is necessarily bad… in fact it ignores how FF XIII transcends a genre usually beset by menus to instead achieve a sense of peril and urgency missing from even the most white-knuckled action games.

moreover, it rides the distastefully stale wave of criticism which obtusely suggests that FF XIII actually even IS any more linear than the series’ previous installments. it’s not. at all. while the game has willfully sacrificed the ILLUSION of choice in order to relay the emotions of its very particular story, it’s no different than the typical JRPG, which just endeavors a bit harder to hide the rails. in FF7 for example, when you first access the world map (a feature that’s been missing from FF games since FF10) your characters are a bit aimless and the polygonal globe of gaia opens up as if the player can take Cloud and co. anywhere he likes. but… you can really only go to the village of Kalm. there’s only one place the game lets you go. and when you get there, you can shop and stuff, and then there’s only one person you must speak with in order for the game to proceed… one inn in which you have to check yourself in order for the flashbacks to kick in and the game to continue. many hours later, you acquire an airship and can revisit several locations and do some sidequests, but there is only ever one obvious destination you must visit in order for the story to continue. all FFXIII does is to remove the illusion of freedom… which is hugely appropriate given that the characters are bound by several external forces and feel suffocated by their predicaments. they never have a question as to where to go, and neither does the gamer… otherwise it’s the same. every Final Fantasy has been about fighting the next battle and the next and then the next… but only in FFXIII does every individual battle (no matter how minor) feel as if it’s progress… as if the characters are working towards a greater goal.

FFVII

it’s a bummer that a fun, solid game like bioshock is celebrated for its meta-contemplation on control (a point the game & its sequel contrive to make several times over, and hope to define the experience), but that FF XIII - which raises weightier, more articulate questions on the topic not only in the player’s experience, but also in the ultimate fate of the characters - is slandered for the same reason just because it shakes the foundations a bit. the consequences in bioshock are flimsy and tremendously de-value the moral choices the player has made, whereas FFXIII - by circumspectly denying the player the illusion of choice while continually calling attention to the idea of agency - resolves into a poignant look as to where decisions begin, and in what ways they do / do not effect an ultimate outcome in a world overrun by the parallel forces of fear and solipsism. FFXIII takes the discussion beyond the realm of games, and into the world at large with games forever serving as a conduit… it’s a brilliant conceit, and one the game’s developers have been right to publicly defend.

and though the battles have always been fun… this time around they’re not only MORE fun, but never tedious. ever. the battle system is among the greatest in the history of the genre, arriving at a spectacularly happy medium between considered tactics, active button-taps, and a healthy dose of pre-battle strategy. the game keeps the training wheels on for a while… perhaps longer than is necessary, but once they hand over the reigns fully and give the player complete control over their party and an abundance of skills, the battles become a real spectacle… carnage and chaos that always feels as if it’s being tightly controlled. it’s also easily the most difficult final fantasy game of all (an argument can be made for FF VI, but… i don’t think so), and the freedoms the player is extended as far as customizing his / her / their party is concerned trump most any other JRPG out there. potential party paradigms are great in number, and it’s tremendous fun to figure out the right one for any particular battle.

so some people (not me. at all) will appreciate the open-ended nature of american RPGs more than their Japanese progenitors, and that’s fine. my problem is with the rash of critics that have erroneously slighted FF XIII for being a reactionary rebuttal to the open games of the West, or as if it’s somehow quantitatively less interactive than the rest of its ilk. it’s a trap into which even some of the more dedicated videogame outlets have fallen prey, but to chide the game with zero supporting evidence as being more linear than its predecessors, while being so lost up the ass of that reductive argument that you fail to recognize the game’s fascinating commentary on control, or the delightful facets in which the game affords the player newfound control… maybe its the circulation of the NYT and the fact that it reaches a much broader audience than just the gamers… but there’s a short-sightedness here that doesn’t sit well with me. ultimately, games should be fun… and if schiesbel found the game tedious, well, that’s his prerogative… but he seems so hung up on linearity that he never allowed himself the freedom to appreciate the game’s true intentions. the game has made amnesiacs of a lot of critics, but the NYT doesn’t have a history of game criticism to forget… only one to forge, and this article lacks the apparent enthusiasm and interest in the subject to transcend trends and techno-awe and deal with FFXIII as a game at all.

as for me… this was like engaging with a smarter version of avatar for upwards of 50 hours, and the best time i’ve had with an RPG of any flavor since I was 13.

p.s. how embarrassed must Square be about Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, right now? i mean, all that silliness about photo-realism, and after pretty much crippling the company they’re now - a mere 9 years later - at the point where the in-game graphics of the latest FF game are FAR superior to anything in their film. yikes.

Women in Games 2010 Conference Canceled

Bad news for "Women in Games"

If you hit up WomenInGames.com you will see their latest posting: "We are very sorry to announce that this year’s Women in Games Conference has been cancelled due to low delegate numbers."( and yes they spelled "canceled" wrong. But who am I to judge?)

Every one knows the Art and Business of making games is a predominately male dominated genre. Like most businesses to be honest. "Women in Games" is an organization for womyn by womyn (w/ male supporters of course) who seek to not only challenge but also change the low representation of females in the industry. They achieve this my encouraging and supporting young grrrls and womyn with mentors, classes, events, projects, research, and so on and so forth.

I myself have attended an amazing panel discussion sponsored by the LA chapter of Women In Games. They had female panelist who worked across the field from publishing, to production, distribution. It was highly accessible, informative, and just plain amazing. Afterward we all went to a bar, and had the oportunity to speak one on one with the panelist, and fellow attendees. Having such a great experience, it pains me to hear that they needed to cancel this event.

Their website encourages questions comments or concerns about the cancellation. I plan on writing in and expressing my disappointment. I encourage you to do the same.
You can send e-mails to
bradford@womeningames.com
OR you can log on to their website and submit a questionnaire anomalously.

American Idol Top 12

So it begins!

Tonight the potential Idols tackled the Rolling Stones. I suspected minor brilliance and mostly disaster. How'd it end up? Here-a-we-go!

Michael Lynche - Miss You

Sounding good as usual. Only contestant with a strong falsetto, showing it off again. Can't say I'd ever in a million years listen to this cover, but he made it his own and sounded great doing it. Nice to see a performance though. Emphasis on the word performance! Cause we have about 3 actual performers so far this season.
Randy - Great performer. Slayed it.
Ellen - Whats not to love about that? Not disappointed.
Kara - Filled the stage with his performance
Simon - Great confidence. Slightly corny & desperate

Ryan runs up to Simon and gets in his face about something. I'm uncomfortable.

Didi - Playing with Fire
Didi looks very Kate from Lost tonight. First time she's sung well sans guitar. Upping the sex appeal, which is good cause SOMEONE needs to. Nice to see the confidence there, totally changes her performance. I buy it when she flirts with the camera. Am I crazy or did she flub the words a little? I predict a similar Idol trajectory as Brooke White.
Randy - On fire tonight
Ellen - Amazing voice, lost her way but didn't spin out, got right back into song (okay, I wasn't crazy, she did forget the words)
Kara - When you push, you lose your way a bit. Intensity you attack the song with. Dark, compelling to match her sweet voice and erie song.
Simon - Agrees. Beginning to show us kind of artist you're gonna be - he's been a fan of hers for the past 2-3 weeks. Solid, not brilliant, can do better.

Casey James - It's All Over Now
Yes! The guitar! This is making my squee-meter go crazy. So cute and this performance is working for me. Taking Randy's advice from last week exactly. What genre would this be? Rockabilly? Kara wants to do him so bad. "Just be a star" is not constructive criticism, Simon.
Randy - Back to Casey he loves. Reminds him of Jonny Lang. Bluesy Stonesey Rocky, back for Randy.
Ellen - Women love him, Ellen loves him without being attracted to him [insert lesbian reference. WOOT! Casey's enjoying it a little too much?]
Kara - He was a rock start, bluesey souly is a good place for him. Best performance since they met. Simon - Thinks he looks great, sang and played well, but felt like audition performance, not using the entire stage & platform he has. Needs to push self & be incredible.

Tiny Man Ryan Alert! Love it when he stands next to Casey.

Lacey Brown - Ruby Tuesday
I like the violin & general opening, but her voice? Let's see. We're all very confused in the room. From her outfit to not actually singing the song. The chorus was okay. Competant, enjoyed it fine, but her voice isnt good enough to actually belong in this competition. I think she's really pretty. Is that weird?
Randy - thought it was interesting & was pleasently surprised.
Ellen -  observes that she likes to sit on the edge of things and found the performance to be sleepy and weird at times.
Kara - 50/50. Clear great voice, but didn't hit all the notes. Can do better
Simon - thinks Lacey performs like an actress. Says she is overthinking it but nothing was wrong with the vocals.

Ryan gives Lacey a tour of the Idol stage. It's awkward.

Andrew Garcia - Gimmie Shelter
This arrangement is atrocious. But he's trying something! He's moving around! Voice sounding good, his voice always sounds good - that's not his problem. Bah. Bored. His voice is fantastic but I have trouble caring about his performances. Great vocal at the end of the song, might help him stick around. Randy - Pitchy all over the place, was under. (I didn't notice apparently!)
Ellen - Best performance yet.
Kara - Doesnt think Andrew connected to the song, but still likes him
Simon - Thinks it didnt quite connect, but moved in the right direction.

Katie Stevens - Wild Horses
Katie gets a one on one interview with Seacrest. Uuuuhhh, why exactly?

SHE got Wild Horses?! SHE did? NOOOOO. Apparently her parents regularly boiled her. Is that why she sucks? Oh I guess I should actually watch the sob stories instead of fast forwarding through them, huh? It's just that I hate wasting time on Katie Stevens.
That Light makes her look pretty. But I'm kind of bored already. Ah hah! There it was. The big notes. Easily her best performance. But would still never buy her album. Her voice reminds me of Jordin Sparks in that it's good enough, but like, whatever, who cares?
Randy - Thought she sang it really well, only a couple of pitch problems, strong performance
Ellen - Started pitchy, once she got into it, was amazing, great voice
Kara - It's never technically perfect with you. Made nice variations on melody, was going in right direction, better than last week
Simon - Only week where she's actually chosen a really strong song. Didnt like second half of arrangement thought she lost emotion. But first time he thinks she connected with a aong & she gave it 100%

Tim Urban - Under My Thumb
HE gets it?! Ugh. A Reggae cover? What kind of artist does he think he is? What's going on? Actually, not bad arrangement, well, at least it's something different from the original, but his voice is absolutely nothing special. Debating whether or not he could be on Glee. Ultimately, no not good enough. Also, Tim's friends are all men who love other men. We get really excited at the prospect of Tim being gay. would like him so much more. Is that wrong?
Randy - Didnt like arrangement, weird for him
Ellen - Felt like she was at a resort drinking a pina colada.
Kara - She liked it cause he made it his own.
Simon - applauds him for doing something different but says it didnt work and rolling stones fans would turn it off. "Crazy" decision.

Siobhan Magnus - Paint it Black
From a town called Barnstable. Win. Frightening family.
Not liking her hair. But definitely liking this performance
There's not much more to say. Dream like nightmare lullaby Anastasia tone to the beginning and the rest is a whole lot of awesome singing. Unfortunately paired with bad hair. Can she call getting to perform with Adam Lambert during the finale now?
Randy - Bringing the drama to American Idol season 9, thought it was HOT ALERT
Ellen - You rise above
Kara - Lambert flashbacks. best interpretation of the night.
Simon - Stand out performance of the night. some will hate, some will love, better than being indifferent & boring.

Lee Dewyze - Beast of Burden
Ryan, don't tell the audience he's nervous! Shaky voice. Kinda hidden by mic. Ooh! Nice note in there. Arrangement sounds like something he'd do. Fits with him. Has a Counting Crows vibe. Sensing the Duritz. Nice ending bit. Solid. Not amazing or anything, but solid enough. Growing to like him more. And starting to think he's kind of hot. Uh oh. Reminds me of when I started thinking David Cook was hot.
Randy - Cross between Rob Thomas & Dave Matthews, (Matthews! Exactly!) thought it was dope
Ellen - Great, sounded great, but expecting more from him, almost didnt come together, but nothing wrong.
Kara - Energy was a little low. Growing faster than anybody, getting more confident with his vocal, tremendous growth
Simon - likes him, but thinks his personality has held him back, he doesnt shine. picked a safe, forgettable song and other people had bigger moments. frustrating cause lee has incredibly good voice. Needs "what I call a moment". Yeah, cause no else else uses that word, Simon.

Paige Miles - Honkey Tonk Woman
Oh no. Why this song. What the hell kind of artist are you? This is terrible. She for sure sounds better than last week, but that's not saying a lot. Ready for her to go home now. Seriously. Done with this. There is nothing distinct about her as an artist. Remotely. Weak sauce.
Randy - Thought it might be a mess, but thought she did all right in the end. Liked it.
Ellen - Had great presence on stage, no one would know she was sick. Sick?
Kara - applauds what she attempted with that song. But knew the stage. Young Paige is back or some bullshit. WHATEVER KARA.
Simon - Taking that into account, she was great. Song is generic would hear in a bar, still think she is better than that and hasnt connected yet. Too old fashioned. But at least at moments heard big voice they loved in Hollywood.

Aaron Kelly - Angie
He's singing Angie? Bastard. His tone is nice. But a little shaky. And the arrangement is whatever. He hasnt done a single different thing with a song ever. For 16 or whatever, sure, great voice. He could use some years of developing his voice more, in my opinion, but apparently America disagrees. Has a better voice than a bunch of other people on the show, but that doesn't mean he's amazing. Boring. Not buying that album.
Randy - Born to sing. could hear a little justin timberlake in there.
Ellen - Great song choice. best next to siobhan.
Kara - Connected tonight, got her back for her criticism last week. really great.
Simon - Feared for him doing rolling stones, but he chose 100% the right song. What he did great was singing the song within his range. In tune mostly, believable.

Crystal Bowersox - You Cant Always Get What You Want
She just gave me goosebumps. That was really cool. What genre is that? Gospel-ish? I don't know, whatever it was it was great. A little low-ish on the energy tonight, but she's always so solid.
Randy - I love you, you're always great. Wasn't favorite, but didnt disappoint
Ellen - You sing with such ease, born to be on stage, so much fun to watch, missing a little personality. Needs to play more on stage. Crystal interjects to say that she was thinking too much during the performance.
Kara - She's so comfortable on stage, wasnt greatest vocal performance, but was still easy to watch and great
Simon - Didnt choose a song that had the drama she needed. The first time he thinks she was beaten by someone, and that was Siobhan. Crystal says Siobhan was amazing. Crystal says she hasnt thought she had the competition in her pocket, but thanks to Simon for thinking she does!

What we learned - everyone is from a small ass town, Ellen is trying to bring the funny, the contestants are trying to bring their A game, and the producers told the judges to be more constructive with their criticism. I'm much more excited for the rest of the season now than I was after the eliminations last week, let me tell you.

My Top Three:

My Bottom Three:

Going home: Paige may get the sympathy vote, Tim may get one more shot for being cute. Lacey was pretty terrible, but at least is sort of interesting cause she's weird & pretty? Wouldn't be surprised if we said goodbye to Andrew tomorrow, despite how well his vocals became by the end of the song. My gut is saying Lacey or Paige. We'll see tomorrow, with musical guest Ke$ha and the first elimination on the big stage. I hope it's Paige.

Cross-posted at Vote4Idol

Update: The bottom three was Paige, Tim & Lacey. Oh America, I'm glad we agreed this week. I was hoping Paige would go home but had a feeling it would be Lacey, as Paige had the laryngitis sympathy vote. I should have been more concrete about who I thought was going home and will be next week, even if it ends up being wrong! See full post

This Just Made Me Cry. 11 Years Later. [Quote]

We're not good friends. Most of us never took the time to get to know you. But don't think that means we didn't notice you. It's no secret that Sunnydale isn't exactly like other school's. A lot of weird stuff happens here. But whenever there was a problem or something creepy happened, you seemed to show up and stop it. Most of the people here have been saved by you, or helped by you at one time or another. We're proud to say that the Class of '99 has the lowest mortality rate of any graduating class in Sunnydale history... And we know at least part of that is because of you. So the senior class offers its thanks, and gives you, uh, this. It's from all of us, and it has written here, 'Buffy Summers, Class Protector.'

Now I've Officially Lost My Mind. Get it? LOST?

I did something I never thought I would do.

Let's quote the youtube page, shall we? SPOILER ALERT. In the video, spoilers for Lost. In the quote from my youtube page, a spoiler for the "story" of the "fan video." Wait. Fan video. No quotes. One day I'm gonna post some Fan Fiction I wrote when I was in middle school. Can't stop me. READ ON!

I can't believe it, but I actually did one of those things people do, where they edit a video featuring characters from a TV show to fit a slightly different storyline. I'm a loser. So.

The story of this video is:
-Sawyer & Kate have the whole best friend vibe going on, but he's clearly in love with her.
-Meanwhile, she falls for Jack, who is also way in love with her.
-When Sawyer kisses her, she's like omg and tells Jack and Jack forgives her, but Sawyer keeps pursuing her then uh oh, she can't help it and she & Sawyer totally do it all over the place (If I'm gonna act like I 12 year old girl by making this video, I'm for sure gonna write a description like one) and Jack sees them.
-Jack is all sad and wonders what went wrong and thinks back on the happy times, while Kate keeps on doing her thang with Sawyer.
-But then Jack tells Kate they have to go back and try again and they have make up sex and Kate says she really always loved him.
-Then Jack punches Sawyer, cause he needed to get that out of his system.
-Sawyer decides not to kill Jack. Nice Sawyer.
-Then Jack & Kate go start their lives together.

 I DID THAT. WHY.

For the record...I'm all about Sawyer/Kate. But apparently not at all about my own sanity. If I was, this video wouldn't exist.

Ah yes. The watermarks! There are watermarks everywhere cause ABC owns this footage, not me. It's all from their promo contest. I figured it was okay to use because it blatantly says who owns it. And there are a bajillion other Lost fan videos on the Internets. But they all suck and mine is awesome. Oh shit, sorry, that was 12 year old Muse being a pest again. Let me just smack her Me her-me it real quick.

Without further ado, complete with snazzy ABC watermarks, is the tale of a girl named something who made out with two totally hot dudes on some show.

Talking Cat Cheats On Michael Emerson. With Puppy?!!?!

I DO WHAT I WANTS

P.S. Let's keep this ball rolling! Someone use What Puppy brilliantly, because, well, because I didn't. I used it to make it seem like a cat was cheating on Michael Emerson. I have issues. You have permission to punch me now.

Okay, also - How'd The Puppy Get Burned? I recommended taking at least 5 minutes before watch each video so you don't become desensitized by What Puppy just yet

Because there is also Old School What Puppy

Don't You Judge Me

Community Gets Meta

There was a very meta moment on Community this week, wherein two characters made a sly reference to the fact that Community keeps coming up against Glee in all these "Best New Show" polls & contests. So how DO Jeff & Pierce feel about the hit Fox show?

Will Glee retaliate? Which show is YOUR favorite?

(For the record, I love both) See full post
