The Gunstringer: Proving Kinect May Not Be Useless After All

Crossposted and commissioned by Gaming Blend

Earlier this week marked the release of The Gunstringer, the first Kinect title from studio Twisted Pixel. The Austin-based company was looking to create a game that went past the casual nature of most Kinect titles and appeal more to the core players. As someone who has generally been unimpressed with how games have been using this motion technology, I was curious to see if one could actually break out of the box and hold my interest longer than five minutes. So did it? Let's break it down.

The basic concept of The Gunstringer is that we are participating in a puppet show starring the titular marionette with no name. The game opens following a woman into Austin's Paramount Theater as she takes her seat in a packed audience. The camera takes us back stage, where we see the actual, wooden puppet and follow it and its puppeteer through the hustle and bustle of opening night, and up on to the stage for the start of the game. From then on, there are occasional cuts to reaction shots of the audience to remind us where we are and provide a bit of comedy. Some have complained that this reminder completely takes them out of the game, but it didn't bother me in the slightest.

This charming concept lends itself extremely well to the Kinect because of how it figures in to gameplay. You use your left hand as if you were holding a marionette, lifting it to make the Gunstringer jump and moving it from side to side to make the Gunstringer, well, move from side to side. You use your right hand to engage in combat, whether it be with a gun, sword, flame thrower or fist. Knowing that you are "controlling a puppet" makes the idea of holding your hands out for 4 hours much more tolerable. The mere fact that logic is backing up the gameplay goes a loooong way.

Hands On & In Depth With Fable 3 - E3 2010

If you've been following my Twitter account, then you know Fable 3 was the #1 thing I wanted to get my hands on at E3 this year. Luckily for us, most E3 attendees have no idea how awesome this game was, so playing a demo for 45 minutes, complete with a walkthrough & all the answers to our questions from not one, but three amazing Lionhead associate producers, wasn't that difficult to score. Here are some photos, video footage and fun facts from our experience.

- Voiceover. This game featured actual in-game chatting. Instead of only being able to make noises when you interact with others, your hero actually SAYS THINGS. With a VOICE. Sure the grunts are still there, but with new feature, we get more of a feel of our character's place among the citizens of Albion.

-There is a swashbuckling character voiced by SIMON. EFFING. PEGG. who, as of right now, is available to make fall in love with you if you are playing a female hero. I really hope this doesn't change cause any character voiced by Simon Pegg, I want in love with me.

-Steven Fry is returning as a voice. Another voice? Playing the evil brother? MICHAEL FASSBENDER. Cue Eruditechick freaking out. Cause that happened. It was awesome.

-The menus are no longer in 2D, but rather fully interactive 3D environments. You talk to Jasper, your butler, change & dye clothes, etc, all by actually running around and engaging. This makes a huge difference as you feel like the game is more organic and continuous. It's. Awesome.

-YOU CAN MARRY YOUR FRIEND'S HEROES OVER THE INTERNET AND THEN HAVE KIDS TOGETHER AND WHOEVER IS IN CHARGE OF THE UNIVERSE YOU PLAY IN KEEPS CUSTODY OF THE KIDS IN SINGLE PLAYER MODE AND THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME AND I WILL HAVE KIDS WITH ALL OF YOU

-The female hero is effing HOT. The game designers noticed that the female hero in Fable 2 got WAY too masculine the more powerful she got. While she is certainly still taller than most of the men, now she is also smokin hot. Even the way she stands, neutrally, is extremely feminine. Win win win.

-The spell mechanism has completely changed. Now you wear gauntlets, each gauntlet representing a different spell. These spells can be combined to create super cool combo spells. All I could get out of the lovely producers was the following: There are six different spells. One spell is lighting, one spell involves throwing swords, and while slowing down time doesn't exist anymore, something similar does.

- Instead of cashing in experience for power ups (no more orbs?), whichever skill you use most gets automatically upgraded. This is pretty much the same as in Fable 2, but simplified. No orbs, no cashing in. Just using and getting more awesome as time progresses.

- The environments are fucking beautiful. Actual cursing is required to describe the beauty.

- Instead of having a whole wheel of gestures (which was confusing for many), you now have specific gestures to pick from depending on the person & situation and it's a whole lot simpler to get someone to like you. While I quite enjoyed the wheel, I also mastered it with my 40 hours of gameplay. But for a lot of people. I imagine it was just confusing and annoying. So simple = just fine with me.

-You are required to wear a chicken suit as one point.

-Your sword changed depending on your morality, down to what EXACTLY you spend your time killing. There are 88,000 different ways your sword can look, including the dropping of blood when you're super evil.

-Being able to touch others goes beyond holding hands, kissing, playing with your kid and hugging your dog. It also applies to combat, which now includes a lot more advanced moves, including grabbing

Below, you can catch three hands on gameplay videos. One features the touching mechanism as it applies to dance. Now instead of looking like an idiot, you're actually dancing with your partner, and in the process, making a Dirty Dancing reference. Another shows off the part of the 3D menu where you can change outfits, along with the hotness of the female hero. The final video shows off some of the fighting mechanisms.

This is still my most anticipated game of the second half of 2010. I'm so effing excited. 40 hours on Fable 2 will be nothing compared to the time I put into this. Oh video games. Why are you so awesome?

If you are attending E3 today, be sure to check out the Fable 3 area at Microsoft. If you are not attending E3, OCTOBER 26TH, BABY. Pre-order now!

A Hot MALE Character In Fable III?!?!?!

Please allow me to be totally & completely superficial for a moment. If you've played Fable II, you know the game specialized in making super hot girls but fugly beyond belief guys. The hottest guy I could find was a tattooed-head-to-toe gypsy, who fathered two children of mine, only to let himself get murdered in our new mansion (I shouldn't have to protect you, husband, get with it) and get my kids taken away in the process, so, ugh. I just hope this is a character MY character can have sex with marry, not someone I have to play as. I take great pride in my Amazonian, blue-vein covered warrior women, okay? Finally, a proper male counterpart! Alex just wasn't doing it, you know? My marriage to Lady Grey is much happier, despite her being both a woman and ghost.

Top Ten Most Awesome E3 Announcements/Previews

So the ten things that excited me most about E3 are probably...not anyone else's ten. But holy effing goodness am I excited for the next 365 days in gaming. I'm hoping to see a top ten from david as well, because I know his will be VASTLY different from mine.

Prepare for the girlyness...

10. Agent

An open world game chronicling what it's like to be a secret agent in the 70s? Yes please. Will have to borrow the family's PS3 for this one, as Rockstar is starting this potential franchise off as a Playstation exclusive. But hey, now that I'm an Xbox owner, I'll need PS3 games to play when I vacation at home. Cause I sure as hell won't be giving away any achievements to an Xbox Live account that isn't mine :)

9. Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy XIII are NO LONGER EXCLUSIVE TO PLAYSTATION.

Now while I've never been particularly attached to either one of these titles, I'll be thrilled to give them a shot now that I can play em with an Xbox controller! david keeps telling me that both of these titles are amazing (I've also assumed as much for as long as I can remember, obviously, they are MGS and FF, I don't live under a rock) and are part of the reason I should have gotten a PS3. But now I can try em out for Xbox! Joy of joys! Now that I've discovered I love RPGs (or...well...Fable 2) I'm excited to try out a Final Fantasy game for the first time.

8. Splinter Cell: Conviction

When the other Splinter Cell games were around, I wasn't into gaming enough in general to care, or to take the time to develop any skill in a title that had nothing to do with Buffy. (Side note. I killed at the Buffy game for Xbox.) Now, for the first time, I'm excited by the opportunity to really get into one of these games and discover why all the boys I knew when I was younger loved this series so much.

The rest of the Top Ten after the jump!

7. Project Natal

Duh.

You know why it's the MOST duh?

BECAUSE IT HAS THAT CHER HOROWITZ, I CAN SEE WHAT CLOTHES LOOK LIKE ON ME, FEATURE THAT I NEVER THOUGHT WOULD EXIST BUT NOW IT DOES AHHHHH

Also, yes, it's Skynet and yes, we're all going to die.

6. Monkey Island: Special Edition

I LOVED Monkey Island as kid, it was my absolute favorite game and I remember parts of it being impossible to get through back then. But I always thought it was funny and fun and something about it just made me happy. That's why this remake of Monkey Island thrills me so much - it's EXACTLY what I want. It IS the original Monkey Island, just remastered, enhanced. But get this - if you want to play it the old school way, with no voiceovers and shitty graphics - you can do that too! It's amazing!! I cannot wait to download this for my 360. Note: You will only be enjoying this glory if you have a 360 or a PC.

5. Modern Warfare 2 Gameplay

Not only is it Modern Warfare 2, which is awesome enough on its own, but you get to drive a Snowmobile! Effing sweet!

4. The Last Guardian

This game makes me want a PS3 more than anything else Sony showed at E3. This will be another game I play on my family PS3 whenever I'm home to visit. Because...wow. This looks breathtaking. It's action-adventure, puzzles, gorgeous, plus you get a giant beast friend. Needless to say...want.

3. Awesome Looking Sequels to Awesome Games

I've either played or watched a friend play all four of the originals here, and was astounded by all of them. The sequels all look like they are gonna kick my ass and I can't effing wait. Here are some previews for you.

Bioshock 2

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Assassin's Creed 2

2. Lego Games

Now you know the dirty, dirty truth about me. I love those damn Lego games. My former roommate and I killed Lego Star Wars (Original Trilogy), my boyfriend and I defeated Lego Indy and I'm currently playing Lego Batman whenever I can find a soul to play with me. Listen people, these games are FUN AS ALL HELL. Here are previews for the two Lego games I'm most looking forward to,

Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4

Lego Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure continues doesn't have a trailer, but it does have screenshots (above) and info. All the original levels have been redone and new ones, like the car chase through Shanghai from Temple of Doom, are now available. Additionally, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will now be featured in multiple levels, the screen will now split if your co-op characters get too far away from one another, and a new feature has been added where you can build your own Indy-themed levels. Love. It.

1. Beatles. Effing. Rock Band.

Three part harmonies

Follow the lives/story of the Beatles through their music

Abbey Road in its entirety will be the first album available for DLC

I'm in heaven.

Seriously. I've been obsessed with the Beatles for so long and am so excited for this game, I have trouble believing it really even exists. But it does! And I'm saving up for it now. Best part of this: I already know the lyrics to just about every Beatles song, which means I can wear the headset and play guitar while I sing! Woot! See full post
